I just chatted with Amber Heard (And Soon the Darkness, The Ward) and Nicolas Cage (every other film ever made) about their new supernatural exploitation throwback thriller Drive Angry 3D, due in theaters this Friday. (We'll have that video interview up for you soon.) And I made sure to ask Cage what audiences can expect when his other hellspawned movie road racer, Ghost Rider, rolls back into movie theaters later this year. Cage, who'd just flown back to Los Angeles from Romania, where he was in the midst of filming the superhero sequel -- Ghost Rider: Spirit of Venegance -- mentioned one detail about the film that sounds pretty intriguing. Find out what Cage told me after the jump.

Now, Cage might have mentioned this detail in another interview, but if so, I haven't seen it... It sounds like Ghost Rider's alter ego, Johnny Blaze, will part ways in the film with the demon inhabiting him. Here's how Cage describes it...

"There's an exorcism scene I just did where Johnny Blaze is being exorcized. And then I also play Ghost Rider, who's the spirit of Zarathos, who's a corrupted angel. So it's like completely different entities. The movie is not like anything I've done before. It's completely original. I think it's a really high adrenaline ride. And I think you'll see things in it that are mysterious as well."

I kind of like the idea that Cage could portray Blaze and Ghost Rider as two entirely separate beings this go-round. The mere fact that Blaze is getting exorcized puts him more in league with classic conflicted Marvel comics heroes like The Hulk and Spider-Man. In fact, it sounds a little like Spider-Man 2, in which Spidey loses his powers when he needs them most. That's the kind of pathos the first Ghost Rider lacked, and that we could use more of this time.

Ciaran Hinds is playing the Devil in this, but isn't that what Mephistopheles was in the original movie? That confused the hell out of me, as Peter Fonda was and is awesome.

Well in the comics there are helllords which are high ranking demons that control various parts of hell, Meph and Satan are two of the top ones.

Hmm...haven't read much Ghost Rider, so that helps. Still reeks of not getting Peter Fonda back, so bringing in someone else.

Yeah. And I never even seen Crank 2, just trailers and stuff.

But I heard it was off the chiz-ains.
Damn, maybe there is merit to Cage's ramblings about it being different.

Crank 2 was indeed some of the most insane shit i have ever witnessed.

I don't think Nic Cage is bad at all, he just picks shitty movies with shitty directors.

KICK-ASS was an example of when he's attached to a great project, he does great work.

I agree. Nic Cage seems like an actor that is pretty much seizing his status as a known name and just taking any script that's readable, but if he were to be really picky he would probably be a lot more well-regarded from a quality perspective.

Best portrayal of the devil was in Constantine.

Didn't like Fonda in the first GR movie.
Nah, best portrayal is either Al Pacino from The Devil's Advocate, or Gabriel Byrne from End of Days. Both were excellent. Peter Stormare wasn't bad in Constantine, but not at the level of those two.

If we're mentioning TV, yes Jon Glover was nice. Ray Wise in Reaper was always good for a comedic role.

Cage has to pay back Uncle Sam.

I watch Ghost Rider yesterday and I enjoyed it. Its the dumbest film I've ever seen but I enjoyed it.
I could describe just about any of Nic Cage's low-end work that way (except Astroboy. He sounds bored out of his mind in that movie).
Its why he's my favorite worst actor.

Yeah I like Nicholas Cage too. It's quite obvious he'll just do any bad movie as long as they give him cash. Thing is I actually think he's good at acting but just stars in bad movies.

Did this merit a sequel?

Or is Nic Cage calling all over Hollywood saying . .. I'll do the picture for cheap . . . just a million or so, I gotta pay my taxes!

How, how in god's name did this movie get a sequel. I don't care if this film turns out Oscar worthy, I just don't understand how people can churn out another sequel to this with the chances of it sucking being so high.

Its just hard to give a movie a chance, when the it's preceding film was one of the worst, depressingly bad movies ever. Not even funny bad.

There's something about the fact that the guys behind Crank 2 are making this, that compels me to want to see it.

But they also made Crank 1 which was awesome.

Oh yeah but Gamer sucked soo....I dunno lol

First one made money.

I cannot believe:

A. That the first one made money.

B. That anyone could ever want to see a sequel to such an unenjoyable mess.

C. That Marvel Studios wasn't so embarrassed by the first, that the next Ghost Rider would have to be a reboot.

Sony owns the Ghost Rider film rights, Marvel has no control over this. The only reason Sony greenlit this film in the first place was to keep the Ghost Rider rights from returning to Marvel.

I really don't get the Crank love. I enjoy bad movies, but Crank was not bad in a good way.

At this point I'm chalking it up to age. Young folks don't have a frame of reference to when movies had tits, violence, and swearing - so they think this crap is "good".

Although I do enjoy the tale of the directors putting one over on the studio with Crank 2 but honestly - there are far more qualified writers/directors working today on B-tier entertainment.

Despite that, I'm hoping they can do something interesting with Ghost Rider. I've always enjoyed the comics since I was a wee lad, and I'd like to see a good fun Ghost Rider movie.
