Alexandra: You've also said that you are interested in pushing into grey areas and exploring taboos. Were there particular taboos that you were you trying to explore with Nier: Automata?
Yoko: There are quite a few if I were to go into minute details, but the greatest one is probably the fact that online connectivity is practically necessary at the final stage.
You *can* beat it offline, but you're really not meant to and the odds are stacked against you to a ridiculously unfair degree. (At least PS+ isn't required for any of this game's online features.)
This combo video has some tips for playing 9S. (It's like an hour long, but the important basics for each weapon type and SD cancelling is covered in the first 15 mins or so.) Despite only wielding one weapon at a time, 9S has quite a few interesting melee options and is surprisingly technical.
Of course, you can also just charge his spear throwing attack and kill everything. Still repetitive, but at least the ridiculous damage output is entertaining.

One of the problems is I'm playing with a 21:9 ratio resolution and the game limits the usable area to 16:9 for this segment so just when I think I can escape I hit an invisible wall.
Also turns out I was wrong about it resetting after two consecutive fails on checkpoints
I saw the Square Enix Ltd and thought I was at the beginning again.
Have left the game window open for when I feel like making another attempt Edit: turned Steam online for an assist and finished it finally. Good lord, there's no chance I had for that last section lmao.
Edit: will ask some additional questions in the spoiler thread instead.
So I started yesterday...how many fast travel stations are there? I was in the middle of the desert had no more quests and had to make my way back to the resistance camp to get back to bunker to get a new quest and it took 20 minutes! Currently I only have Bunker and Camp but I just beat the
Opera? boss in the amusement park and now am in machine village

They're all over the place, you should be finding them pretty easily. Have you unlocked the ability to use them yet though? I don't remember if its before or after the Amusement Park...

Yea (I think) but I have only found one at resistence camp that i can actually teleport to. All the other vending machines just let me save. I am guessing the ones you can travel to are special ones?

Got the Forest Access Key. (Not saying game X is as good as game Y but) I'm finding myself with a similar empty feeling to the one I had during the last half hour or so of The Last of Us, and I have a feeling it won't be going away soon.
I'm loving the game more and more the deeper in I get, but I'm not sure I've picked the best time irl for me to be playing something like this, lol.

thanks. lol
all i did was change 2b to close range changed to the spear, equipped combust and one other hacking chip i'm forgetting and it turned into easy mode. lol
ended up enjoying the hacking due to the AOE attack after hacking.
anyways, Long rant coming.
Finished route B and what can i say? lmao.
my boy 9S was the main character all along! well IMO! hahahaha
at first i was quite annoyed i had to play as 9s and technically repeat all i've done but man this guy's the one doing all the saving all along, if i had never played as him i wouldn't have realized this at all but i still think there should be an option to skip most of the route b or something. why you might ask??? lol cause the start of route C was fucking epic!!! and some people might have been turned off due to playing that all over again (even though i actually did more side quests in route b).
and LOL, I've only played A2 for like 3mins but i already like her character lmaoo.
that fucking pod is annoying!!.
still, sigh why did she have to make 9S see that scene. urgh. and fucking 2b calling him nines at the end why?????? now you'll make my boy 9s perish fighting against a godly like combat model (she fucking turns invisible when she dashes) and he's just a scanner *insert crying emoji*. gaddamit adam already did a good job of planting hatred in him and fucking 2b had to pick a good fucking time and scene to go ***. i'm fucking torn man. shit this story better have a fucking twist somewhere else cause i dont see 9S surviving this, infact i dont see anyone surviving lmao.
oh, and that
commander
was useless af lmao.
cant wait to be done with work and continue, i'm holding myself back from watching the whole thing on youtube.
A2 butt >>>>>>>>>>>> 2B butt.
oh btw don't think i have a dislike for 2B at all, i actually do like her but she put my main at death door already, i dont like that.
I just started playthrough C and am massively under-leveled and have been playing on easy to see the story and am now getting absolutely destroyed by everything and hating it.
Also the story stuff still hasn't really done much for me, I keep playing waiting for more crazy stuff to happen like the fun first few hours of the game.
Any reason to do the side quests? I was bummed after wasting hours upon hours doing the monotonous side quests in the original game only to find out there was literally zero reason to be doing them.
I'd rather just enjoy the weird story, so are the side quests similarly just useless padding in this game? So far, a lot of them seem like fetch quests. I'll do the good fun ones, like the martial arts sparring on top of that one building, and the missing little sister in the desert, but I'm not planning on traipsing all about the world searching for missing materials and bullshit.

Here's a list of recommended ones. Regardless of whether you do them or not, they are not useless padding. Thematic or narrative value, a quirky story, foreshadowing, etc., a lot of the sidequests have their purpose.
Haven't been able to play Nier for more than a week I believe. Glad to finally be able to play some more of it as I'm in route B at the moment and plan to be done with the game by the end of the month so that I can play Crash the day it drops. PS+ ain't helping by releasing Life is Strange though...
I finished this yesterday and I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would because I didn't like the demo, but I thought it paled greatly in comparison to the first Nier.
I thought the first Nier felt more "RPGish" was a little more rugged gameplay-wise, but I still enjoyed it more. Plus, it had more of a Zelda feel to it with the dungeons and whatnot. I thought the dungeons and areas in Automata were very bland and offered no desire for me to explore or take in the sights and sounds. Tons of invisible walls were a major turn off for me. I enjoyed the combat more than Nier though, but that's about it.
Also, I cared a lot more about the characters in Nier than this. A2 was actually my favorite character believe it or not.
Great soundtrack though. I preferred Nier's, but this was still very good.
Liked the game overall, but not quite as much as many others did.
I just started this game for the first time, spent 30 mins progressing and died... no save points and have to start at the very beginning? I don't have time for this shit, lol

Nope, no downsides at all. In fact, we here at the OT have been recommending that people lower it to Easy/Normal for the beginning section, which is where you are at. Afterwards, if you want to raise the difficulty, go for it, as you'll be able to save normally. Or if you want to keep it at Easy and just enjoy the story, nothing wrong with that either.
This is all fucking awesome, but I'm kind of holding out hope that the ending-ending holds something in store that is at least a little less hopeless, because christ
. I really do love it, though.
Before going back for the last ending(s), I think I'm going to go ahead and 100% this thing, something I don't feel compelled to do for many games. I'm actually kind of excited to do so! I only seem to be missing two or three sidequests and I have most weapons and stuff, so it's mainly going to be upgrading things and clearing up the joke endings.
Edit: Cleanup went pretty quick! It looks like at this point all I need to do any out-of-the-way grinding/searching for is a handful of upgrade materials for the one pod I don't already have maxed.
Another edit: I think a hidden trophy bugged out for me?
Naughty Children. Stole the mask, talked to Emil, stole the head, fought Emil, beat Emil, and... nothing? I have both the mask and the head in my inventory but no trophy. Unfortunately I didn't realize the trophy was meant to pop right them at first so I actually already saved, and when I go back to the room, nothing triggers (and the box has already been looted)
. Guess I might just need to buy it? (I also feel kind of awful about trying for it at all; I feel like the game should be talking shit to me, Undertale-style.) (Yet another edit: In the search for Unit Data, I fought the last of those gold machines, and yeah, see previous comment.)
allows for for accessing the Factory Hangar access point? Tried a variety of ones from route C but each state there is 'interference' and can't be accessed. I've seen videos where players have been able to teleport there using the normal character, and have even tried with the same
chapter
as they seem to be using (based on the objective text) with no luck.
Ed: marked certain words with spoiler tags in case it's considered one.
Ed 2: turns out that means it's blocked by attacking robots. Clear them and the access point is free again. There was a nice Iron Giant-esque moment along the way:
.
second. i saw the ending from the start of route c already but i still have questions, is there a thread where everything has been discussed to death about the 'machines'
3rd. frankly i'm very okay with route c not d ending,
i dont like the idea of one surviving
but route e trumps all so its good.
game is a solid 9 for me or 9.5.
good story
good music
good combat
poor enviroments tho. imo

I haven't played the game for months, I had a random thought about why the robots turned into zombies and it just hit me that the book Pascal requests before the village burns is one of Nietzsche. They contemplate it seriously for a moment then possibly discredits it as the thoughts of a mad man.
The children then kill themselves because Pascal turns into the monster that they hate. I got that the children killed themselves because they were so terrified of what Pascal became once they broke the pacifist beliefs they taught them. I totally missed that if Pascal just paid attention to the book they just read maybe they could have prevented the children's fate. Even if the robots did manage to overpower 2A and kill them/the children the results wouldn't have been any different from their perspective as all there is to existence is living, however if they didn't have their badass hero moment there was a chance they still would have all survived.
