NieR: Automata Spoiler Thread

I think it's cute how there is an in-game vendor who sells you trophies but it kinda sucks cause a platinum trophy is now meaningless.

I beat the 2nd Emil fight but the trophy wouldn't trigger, so I'm glad I was able to buy that one. Still feel guilty about buying any of the other ones I didn't legitimately earn, so I'll just stuck with like an 80% trophy completion rate.

what I was thinking was ch13 in ff15 plot reveals and location is quite similar to the basement lab sequence in undertale. Nier automata covered similar topics as well.

Oh, that? I mean, I guess. Thought it'd be a more broad similarity tbh

Why feel guilty?

They are the embodiment of the Machine Network's evolution.

There are in hindsight major clues to this in Route B where the first time we see one of the "red girls" is when 9S is leaving the bunker to assist 2B fighting Eve. (There is only one holographic figure as only Adam is "dead" at this point).

That's not the first time that the red girls make an appearance. You can see one of them briefly during a cutscene in the alien ship after the fight with Adam and Eve, meaning that they're separate from Adam and Eve.

Just got to ending E without 100% the game. Chose to delete my save files without backing up because emotions. This game did weird things to my feelings and I seem to have lost the ability to make sound decisions!

Time for that 2nd full playthrough...

Are the red girls based on Yonah at all? I was under that impression...

Actually, it seems as though the lore dump the game gives you at the end says that the robots incorporated components of the human server within themselves, including the information remaining on the original Gestalt (Nier). The information on Yonah appears to have been old information from before Project Gestalt went fully under way. One interesting thing to note, the watcher symbol on Eve, the red eyes and the resemblance that the red girl (N2) sort of has to Manah/One makes me think the Watchers somehow influenced the machines as well, so they're a combination of their original programming, the information from the human server, and possibly some kind of inciting programming from the Watchers.

It'll be interesting to see if we can get a Grimoire Automata or something at some point to clear things up. Hopefully they realize that fans outside of Japan would be interested so we could potentially get a localized copy.

Yesterday Kyle MacCarley finished route C on stream with Kira. Too bad they needed to go and postponed D/E to tomorrow.

Highly recommend watching them play the last scenes in the tower.

Also, that happened:

OMG yes thank you I'll go watch this now. o_o

Yep the signs very clearly point to the Watchers having influenced the machines' eventual legacy. I just wonder when these questions will be answered and in what format...

Which is probably the better choice.
It's more meaningful.

I feel like I was the only one that brought something Automata related for a signature.

She said to me: "Thank you so much for playing this game"

I wasnt able to ask her anything about her thoughts on it, but she seemed really sincere when she said that.

EDIT: Also, love kira in that last stream

Finished.

I have a fuck ton of questions, but there is something that's irking me that's probably answered in the first game.

YorHa units were created with machine parts, thus they have to have been built post humans. So do the androids in general had some sort of heirarchy or government?

I mean, probably? The yorha are created by a set of androids and most of the other androids are probably unaware of them before they were built, because their whole point is to fool the remaining androids on earth.

There has to be some type of Androids in charge, keeping them going and motivated, but they're never seen in the game.

Someone has to have run maintenance on their Moon server, and though most supply rockets that go up there are empty, some had supplies, meaning there's recipients.

If you look around here, you'll see tons of theories on it. The above is what I personally believe.

I never post on Neo-gaf. Might need to fix that as I feel a deep bond with all you wonderful video game people even though we never talk.

That being said, I felt the need to finally post something after my experience with NieR: Automata. I don't have too much to say, just because I lack the words or eloquence to say anything that hasn't already been said.

Nothing has resonated with me like this game. I have dealt with a lot of bouts of depression in the past decade and have a train of thought that tends to lead down nihilistic paths. This game was an incredibly depressing journey (the good kind of depressing I think), but the ray of hope at the end was amazing. When I found out what was being done with ending E, I was in tears. What a profound and beautiful experience.

Undertale isn't really that similar. Undertale was more about naive pacifism. It doesn't really try to ascertain that much about the human condition.

I disagree. There is an interesting compare/contrast between Undertale and Automata on subjects they both touch

Undertale spoilers:
Undertale's pacifism is just the foundation from which it asks deeper questions from the player. Namely, the temptation of the Genocide run asks the player what it would take for them to discard the golden ending they worked so hard to achieve. In Undertale, the player irreparably tarnishes their save, unable to ever achieve the golden ending again,
for a selfish desire to seek new experiences. In Automata, ending E allows players to irreparably discard their save, wiping the record of their experiences, for a selfless desire to help strangers obtain the golden ending.

Both games also explore the concept of immortality and how it intersects with morality. Though the form of immortality is different in each game. In Undertale, the cycle of rebirth through DETERMINATION is what warps Flowey's (and potentially also the player's) perspective on the value of life. In Automata, androids and machines have a virtual immortality through being able to backup their data/memories. Despite this, 2B comes to value the life of an individual 9S, even when the YoRHa server was still intact

Why does 9S hear the story about the "become as gods" rmachine story before we hear it for real afterwards? He says it was in the moon server, but why?

Undertale imposes that morality though. Ending E is still ultimately up to you to decide the worth of deleting your save, and the ultimate message of it all: in a world where our existences may prove ultimately meaningless, it is up to us to find meaning within ourselves.

Morality of immortality is explored in both games but I actually don't think nier's message is that immortality warps your sense of self.

I mean it doesn't take that long to be fair, so it's easier to fit into than, say, persona 5. :P

Was my favourite game the year it came out, but the comparisons I'm seeing between it and nier..... eh, I can see why one would think that, but I really don't think that they're that similar in the themes explored.

Now all that's left for you to do is spread the word of Nier to the masses lol

I'm so pressed over this game that I now actually lie in wait for podcasts and such that discuss it lol

I'm surprised how little discussion there is around it at the moment for how great of an experience it is. Patrick Klepek wrote a brief piece about ending E and talked about it on Waypoint radio a bit, but I haven't heard much talk about it on any podcasts.

I am certainly spreading the word far and wide. I've already ordered a PS4 copy to share with friends who I think should play it.

Is there a good breakdown of exactly what is happening in ending C? It's a bit vague.

A2 hacks into 9C with the intent to repair his logic and fix the corruption from the virus. She alludes to having a plan that the pod thinks is dangerous to her, but I'm not sure what that plan is. Then she reaches 9S' core data? Memories? Then Pod 042 takes 9S' body away from the tower. She stays behind to touch that pillar of light with the sounds of children laughing. I have no idea what that represents. Is that the virus? Then the tower collapses (without sending the ark into space? If so, good. Fuck Adam/Terminal/the machine network) and she is crushed, but rebuilt in ending E.

I got platinum legitimately and offered up my save to help other players. Feels good.

I really, really, really wish this game had a more balanced difficulty curve especially for coming back to the game.

Add a 10 or 20 second to cool down to healing items. Remove leveling for players and enemies and make health and damage determined by the difficulty setting. Rework the difficulty setting so that Easy=Anyone can beat. Normal=Can be challenging for players who put little effort towards things like weapon upgrades and chips. Hard=challenging for players who put a lot of effort towards chips and weapon upgrades. Insane=Challenging for players who completely understand the game systems and enemies and have maximized builds.

I feel like this game (and other action rpgs) would benefit greatly from using a level slider like the one in TWEWY. Have that completely replace a standard difficulty select and Nier: Automata would be way more satisfying in the combat department for longer.

I've been waiting to be able to check this thread out since launch haha. NieR provided such a unique experience for me in it's Grimoire NieR- reading up on the lore involving Drakengard, the White Chlorination Syndrome, and the extinction of humanity was so fascinating and I've seriously never been as enthralled by a game's premise. Reading up on people's interpretations of the symbolism and smaller details is so much fun and this one didn't disappoint.

Ending E is one of the best endings to a game I've ever seen. Genuinely powerful. One thing I want to know though, have we figured out anything regarding the Watchers yet? And are the two red haired machine girls Adam and Eve reincarnated and evolved? If anything, the distortion of their voices felt like a callback to the Watchers and Manah to me but I didn't understand the significance of that at first glance.

The girls are just the machine server given conscious forms.(they outright say that). Its definitely a nod to Manah, though. (Hence they are not adam and eve reincarnated (they also appear in the stage play which is a prequel iirc))

The game offers no answers on the watchers but some questions. Especially regarding Eve's blackening, and symbol .

I need more lpers losing it to ending e, any hot tips?

Only one I've seen so far is Liam formerly of super best friends totally breaking down when the choir kicks in.

Of course I'll watch Kyle, but any other good recommends?

I see the danger there is more like a dangerous path to 9S mind(probably his memories deep inside). Thus puzzle-platforming you do to get to him.

A2 then suicides while destroying tower(the ray should represent tower here, why it is in 9S is another question but maybe he is connected to network after corruption)
She finally connects with her fallen teammates(laughs were like a representation of their good moments together).
The tower is destroyed either way in ending C/D. No ark in C tho.

I assumed that the ark launched in both endings and it's how the tower collapses. I thought that what A2 did was store his memories on the ark before it launched but I guess she would have no way of knowing it's an ark.

yeah, she told 9S that it is a weapon.
Also, it was Adam who invited 9S to join the Arc in D so it is probably not that easy to get there.

I mean what is the difference to Earth if Ark was released or tower just collapsed? Nothing will change for them at this moment.
