NieR: Automata Spoiler Thread

The Emil stuff, Devola and Popola, the little references to the first Nier like The Library, all the great remixes of songs from the first game. All of these things really added to my experience, but I also think this game does a great job standing on its own as well.

Reading everything here, and diving deeper into the lore I realise I missed a whole bunch of story stuff.

I think I'm going to just replay the whole thing. 100% run.

Maybe do the good thing and sacrifice my save file for the others! I saved in different slots btw, do they both get deleted?

Yes, to my GFs humongous rage when she had a separate game going in another save slot :D

Is there a translation floating around of the Novella where 9S almost succeeds in killing 2B when he finds out she is an E model before the game starts?

According to Steamspy (which I'm taking with a grain of salt), Automata has 162,195 owners on Steam alone.

I imagine it'll hit ~295,000 sales in Japan (around the ballpark of Skyward Sword), so we only need ~550,000 PS4 sales in North America and Europe to hit 1 million.

I imagine a few Steam and PSN sales will push us over the edge.

That would be fantastic news for everyone involved.

Sequel incoming :-D

It would also be good for the industry as a whole imo. Maybe then more publishers are willing to try something new.

What do you think of 9S attacking 2B First in the novel? Seems kind of strange considering all stuff that happened in the actual game.

it makes perfect sense from 9s's perspective, dude is a 'different' person every time even though his base is the same

it just adds on to the tragedy that is 2b's entire existence as it confirms one of the possibilities of 9s learning the truth is for him to just outright try and kill her for his own survival.

interestingly, the story makes it sound like the reason 9s has any combat ability at all is very specifically because he had been training in it so he could potentially kill 2b. so that's just another thing that carried over from one of his previous lifetimes, i guess

Can someone explain to me what Jackass means by "evolutionary dead-end machine lifeform" exactly? I'm not a native speaker, so I'm having a bit of a hard time grasping what she's saying.

I understand "dead-end" as a lifeform that can evolve no further, but who is she including in this description? Do the network terminals count?

Could any of you show where you read this? I can't find anything on google :/ just keeps bringing up the ingame novels.

I hope Taro releases something (game, dlc, short story) that explains who Accord is and why she can time travel, so everything is tied together.

i don't think accord can travel through time, more like everyone of them is part of a network and they exist in all the timelines, so they're pretty much ubiquous

From what I can tell she either means the non-sentient, mindlessly aggressive machines you tend to fight throughout the game, or she means that ALL machine life forms are evolutionary dead ends and she's going to kill them all. Given Jackass's personality I'm going to guess it's closer to the latter, but it's possible that the specificity of the insult means she would exclude machines that seem to display real sentience like Pascal.

He did the world a favor. The people of the Aerie all sucked anyway.

They bullied our girl kaine so they had it coming. Emil is probably the most innocent out of the Nier cast compared to Nier standards. Doesn't really want to hurt anyone and usually tries helping other people on their quests.

I wonder what the Emil end goal is.

Are we gonna be flying around space in Nier 3 and stumble across a planet sized Emil?

I mean, keep in mind that ~12 emils can LEVEL THE EARTH.

Emil has to be stopped. Don't let that cute face fool you.

The conclusion to Devola, Popola, and Emil brought on some intense emotions out that I was feeling in my life when I played the original Nier years ago...heavy stuff.

Also, if you denied the request in route E you are a certified monster!

By the way, what is a consensus on **** word? I see conversations rising about it everywhere.

I mean it's quite obvious at first but some believe its "kill" or smth. Considering that there is pretty much no swearing words in dialogs(which also makes them all more dramatic, just imagine how it will sound if everyone would just scream fucks at each other lol) it could possibly be "fuck" censored.
However, events like in novella and when 9S stabs 2B in his memories and in the tower might make it "kill" and overall "hatred" theme of this particular dialog is also suggesting it in some way.
Furthermore, as I understand number of * differs in other translations? But then it looks more like a translation styling thing than the actual number of letters of the word to me.

What's a quick summary of the stage play? I found a translated script but I ain't got time to read the whole thing lol.

Anyone else chuckled when 9s accidentally falls on a2's sword with ending d (or was it C?)

Yoko trollin'

The conclusion to the Nier universe will be Emil clones vs the accord posse. Watchers may make a cameo.

About the "****" My brother completely misconstrued the whole thing by the end. He figured that 9S had sussed out towards then that 2B had kept killing him on orders and that he was actually furious at A2 because he wanted to be the one to kill 2B. He tried to put 2+2 together with how insane he gets killing the 2B clones and stabbing the shit out of her when she shows up in his head during missing memory scenes, comes up to me and says "OMG THEY MEANT KILL"

You know, the best part about that is that kill and fuck are equally valid and there is a psychological interplay between the two actions. I'm currently reading a book called 'On Killing', written by a US Lt.Col who wanted to make a study on the psychology of the act of killing itself. In some ways, it is an excellent companion piece to this game. (I've been reading it over a long time, since there is a lot to digest.)
Has merit when you remember Jackass says that androids are programmed to feel what is probably an almost sexual pleasure from killing, during one of her quests.
Ah, yes, that too.

Ok, wild speculation time!

Nier 3 will take place in a world where all humans are dead, all androids and machines are broken, and emils clones have formed a new species of emils of various shapes and sizes.

It'll break new ground by being the first JRPG to feature only a single VA doing every single character! Dozens of hours of emils talking to other emils. Every single character is named Emil. All weapons will be further variations on the Emil heads. You'll shoot smaller Emil head bullets at bigger Emil heads. The sun has burnt out, and the world is now lit by a giant glowing Emil head, who hums all the background music which is all further variations on emils theme.

Accord will make a cameo walking around with an Emil mask on.

I remember reading that it's **したい in Japanese (keep in mind this is second hand, I haven't checked myself), which would only really make sense with ころしたい (kill) in that particular context.

Both would be valid options though, so I'm cool with it being left ambiguous. :)

edit: I just tried doing this scene in French, for science. ****** can't be "tuer" (kill), which makes it very unambiguous, lol.

The "secret" grave and flowers scene is enough to crash this theory as well as his actual saved memories which he wants to defend.

I finished the game 4 days ago and fuck me how all the pieces which were confusing during A/B comes into places. Never I felt so engaged in the story and lore of the game AFTER finishing it. I know for sure that I will replay the whole thing again soon(I did back up my save... pc master race yay but I won't use it, I promise)

Ya, I didn't say it was a well thought analysis but I had to give him credit for giving a story more complicated than call of duty a minute of thought :L

I dont even know how I will ever play those "AAA" games now lol(not that I was giving a shit about them anyway but hey).

really hope for good sellings of the game so that Yoko Taro can have enough proof that his games can be profitable. And I really want to play some of his remastered earlier ones if they ever came out.

Still sad that there are no DLC announced/in production tho but who knows.

Yeah, kill works in the Japanese and English context. On the same note, love works in both contexts as well. Think back to Jackass's research.

Really up to interpretation given the themes of the game.

WANT! hahaha :-D

Anyone else considered that the long-term result of ending D is the origin of Drakengard?

The "Ark" the machines launch gets sucked into a space-time warp that blasts them back to earth at the origin of the Drakensphere timeline; causing the disorientated and fragmented machine network to create the modern day city that appears out of nowhere on the Iberian peninsula.

The remains of the N2 network manifesting itself over time as the cult of the watchers, and a new generation of "Red Girls", like Manah.

The memories held in the ark ripple forward through time 9S rage informing Caim, and other fated individuals, while the overall will of the network or a mutant strain of the logic virus creates the red-eye corruption that eventually evolves into the legion...

2B/2E was designed to kill other androids, but she is also locked from attacking them at all in the early C/D route. Seems like a major design flaw.

Command gives them targets to take out.

Actually what you stated is good design since the end goal is for all YoRHa androids to be disposed of at the end of the project plan which is when that becomes an issue.

She's able to fight/kill 9S, A2, the YoRHa betrayers, etc just fine, but she isn't able to attack those androids, because she hasn't been permitted by the Commander.

The fact that she never gets permission to kill 9S can be seen as foreshadowing.

Is there a reason why 9S and A2 are freely able to attack other YoRHa units without being commanded?

The twins backstory is another good example of realistic racism in a game.

They are basically Muslim. Their model led to the failure of gestalt but they still shoulder the blame and are 'banned' from other villages.

a village of jerks

take that dimo
Not if you consider the theory that the people of the Aery were aware of the true nature of the shades and were just trying to keep the bloodthirsty Nier and pals from destroying their only chance to become human again.

...but then again they also treated Kaine like shit because she was a hermaphrodite. So screw them anyway
