Nigeria's population count is massive

Was watching who wants to be a millionaire and this question came up

"Which country has the largest population?"

1) Brazil
2) Russia
3) Nigeria
4) USA

I dismissed Nigeria immediately because it just didn't seem right.

I mean look at this map and the size of the countries. Have a guess yourself at the population if you like.

Well it turns out Nigeria has a population of 200 million, equal to that of Brazil, except in what looks like 1/6th or so of the land. Nigeria has about 66% of USA's population squeezed into about a 1/10th of the land. Great Britain seems a bit bigger in land mass yet only has a population of 70million. This is madness. Is Nigeria just super cramped as a country or what? I'm amazed at such a number.

I think you're underestimating how empty the US and Brazil are. Nigeria's population density isn't particularly high, it's on par with UK and Germany.

no i thought about that too

i googled californias population, which i hear is a very crowded place.

california is half the size of nigeria and has a population of 40 million.

Nigeria is twice the size California but has 200 mill population, 5 times californias

thats madness right? could californians imagine their state with 5 times the number of people?

i didn't know about Nigeria but knew Africa's population had been trending upward and would surpass India at some point.

The country that is the weirdest is Indonesia, that is a country that is never mentioned, seemly does nothing, has no relevance on the world stage, and yet they are the 4th highest populated country.

Then 5th is Pakistan which is concerning since they have Nukes, were the ones that sheltered Bid Laden and are currently facing some issues of instability.

That map you’re looking at isn’t the real size. Africa is way bigger than most maps portray it to be.

didnt know about the different size map thing, but....

Brazil/Area
8.516 million km²

United States/Area
9.834 million km²

Nigeria/Area
923,768 km²

Even California is empty by European standards.

And UK is only 242,495 km². So population density of Nigeria is smaller than UK.
Brazil, US, etc are pretty empty for the most part.

Lol, most of California is wilderness, if not desert.

Cities are overcrowded, yes. But there is a lot of land mass that is unoccupied in that state. Like most states in the Republic.

I read once you could fit the entire population of the world into Texas with the density of New York City.

I also was ignorant of Nigeria’s population size.

Interesting I wonder how UK got its empire (to lose it) but Nigeria did not

That is a scary thought. I get claustrophobic in London

Pakistan, Indonesia and Bangladesh are also heavily packed.

Nothing compared to India and china though.

The U.S is basically the east coast plus the midwest and then nothing from the plains all the way to the westcoast which has some big cities but nothing compared to the east coast. .

Wow look at baja California in Mexico almost completely dark except for Los Cabos basically.

Geography and population distribution is fascinating stuff.

3 major factors that come to the top of my head, water, arable land, and ease of transportation for trade.

I have mixed feelings about this guy's YouTube, but here's an interesting look at Indonesia's population:

Regarding transportation, it is a major issue and I would like to share this highly technical academic look at this problem from the perspective of Kazakhstan:

I watched about 2/3rds of the Indonesia video and bailed. I dont know who the narrator is, but sounds like he's jerking off to Indonesia every sentence.

I dont know what he says in the last 6 minutes, but the first 5 minutes was useless filler and the next part he explained the combo of volcanos, fertile land and good year round climate all contributing to making tons of food.

That's fine, but lots of countries can make endless food too, but have a fraction of the population, so it's not a food reason.

Giant populations simply come from a combo not limited to: high birth rates, tight knit families who have kids for family sake or religion, physically intense kind of industry (manual labour needing family help), immigration, and being a lucky country where wars over the past 1000 years didnt crater the population into the toilet (so they've had a good starting base of people from the beginning and maintained it).

Nigeria is massive, and a country on the rise. Lagos is the largest english speaking city in the world.

What's the methodology? I would have guessed an Indian city to have more English speakers. If the criteria is places where English is the sole official language then it's definitely Nigeria since the US lacks an official language and the rest of the anglosphere is sparsely populated.

My surface level understanding leads me to this conclusion: A dramatic increase in living standards over the past 40 years (Nigeria started rolling in oil money) combined with "With every new mouth comes two hands and two feet" style family planning. I believe it was less than 10 years ago where over 60% of the population was under the age of 18. An article from 2020 said that 70% of the population is under 30.

TL;DR: More money/resources and fucking like rabbits.

Nigeria is about 357,000 mi2.

it has more land area than France, Spain, Japan, Germany, UK, or Sweden.

You can't really get a good idea of how big a country is just by looking at a map.

I was going to start a new thread about this but didn’t want to get political or anything like that. Seen this news story tonight and it’s desperately sad. Somalia is basically in famine. 300k people are in famine conditions and 2 million on the brink of famine. Africa is so divided even as a continent. There are richer nations and poorer nations. I’m not saying I understand all the complex war in the country but what we are seeing in Ukraine is also awful, it’s almost as if we forget about Africa day to day. Band aid and live aid tried to make us care again, but we’ve failed a lot of the planet or we just cannot figure out how to fix it all. It’s impossible and I hate that.

Some people on this forum complaining they’re going to have to pay more for gas this winter and maybe for a long time. These people here can’t get food or water. We are billionaires compared to what these folks have. It’s all relative I know but surely we can do better than this.

You'd be surprised at how much land human beings don't take up.
If you want to get a better feel for how humans can fit into various areas, check out a topographic map instead, or a climate-based map.

I had no idea that Nigeria was so populated, though, or growing so quickly, so that's some pretty interesting information.

I was thinking who tf falls for this crap and then my friend told me that his parents sent his xbox 360 years ago to nigeria lol.
My freshman-year roommate in college, who was an uber-spoiled and sheltered rich kid, gave at least $5000 to a Nigerian princess, who contacted him via email on Yahoo.

I was in the room when he told his mother (over the phone, not speaker-phone) about why his bank account was empty, and I could hear her scream, "HOW FUCKING STUPID CAN YOU BE?" from across the room.

It was an awkward moment.

I dunno, maybe he thought "Nigerian prince scam" would sell better than "hookers, blow, and abortions" :p
