i can see people making cases for Ninja Gaiden or Devil May Cry 3, or even Resident Evil 4...

Anyway, Ninja Gaiden wins. Smart AI > Enemies flying at you.
Although Ninja Gaiden is definitely one of my favorite action games of this generation, for the sake of this thread, I will say DMC 3. Only because I played through it more times than I did NG. Also, I liked the combat better in DMC 3. Other than that, I am sure that we can all agree that they are both brilliant games.

Both Ninja Gaiden and DMC3 have amazing action (although DMC3's is more free-form, twitch based, and more varied), you have to remember there are other elements to a game, like story and replay value.
You can argue that maybe DMC3 had better action, or NG did--but when it comes to characters, cutscenes and stories, DMC3 wins hands down. It's more of a complete experience.
In the end however, I can say those who love one, yet distate the others are fuckin transparent as fuck fanboys (coughIjoelcough). Their both cool games that need to be experienced. I mean c'mon guys, what the fuck--we got two high production valued action games that deserve to break 1 million yet haven't? That's bullshit, support games like these or easy as fuck -can be beaten in 3 hours type games is all we'll get next-generation.
BUT:

I'm one moment away from ragging on both DMC3 and Ninja Gaiden to bring balance, but I just don't have much of the hate in me.

edit// biggest problem with god of war is it needed about 10 more hours of gameplay, more boss fights and a bigger focus on puzzles and exploration/hidden stuff, because that was it's strong point. Still a great game though. 9.5+

I don't know, I didn't like how the story seemingly focused on one guy, who acted the same god damn way throughout the game.
While with DMC3 you have 4 main characters, all who have believable motives, goals and histories.
Dante the cornball (yet gets serious when need to). Vergil the brother seeking to redeem his incomplete being, and kill off any aspect that makes him seem human (aka, having a brother, Dante). Arkham and Lady (well, days of our lives with that huh?)
You should really play DMC3, the fact that you love NG to such a degree means at the least you'll think DMC3 is a pretty solid title, at the least. I know it has a 'harsh' save ssytem but if you take note of Speevy's thread, I assure you there are those who can more than help with any and all facets of the game.
