Ninja gaiden VS. RE4. FIGHT!

ng was awesome but i sort of got over the action too fast i think.

i played RE4 straight through and it left me way more impressed than i was with NG. i mean in NG, i was pretty impressed, but when playing through RE4 my mind was constantly blown.

Resident Evil 4 may not be technically better than Ninja Gaiden, but like a lot people has said a good art direction can take you places, and Resident Evil 4 is full of incredible art. the whole village, the castle everything looks amazing there are a couple of rough edges particularly in some textures in the castle no less, but for every bad texture you saw in RE4 there was a part like the lava room which completely blow you away enough to forget about any bad texture.

So the game didn't look brown in the first quarter of the game because it had a limited pallete but because it was what they were inentionally trying to portay visually.

This is not the 8-bit era, we're talking about art direction so the issue is not about whether they couldn't use the colors but the choices they made in terms of colors. As with anything art-related, it's subjective.

I didn't use MGS2 innocently as it also limits itself color-wise and at the risk of provoking SSx, it doesn't look particular good either, IMHO.

The biggest thing that hurts Ninja Gaiden aesthetically in a matchup like this is Team Ninja's apparent aversion to atmospheric lighting with a dynamic range of texture (atmospheric effects) and color. Ninja Gaiden looks fantastic in many ways, yet when I play it I always imagine how much better so many parts would look with less plastic, weak lighting.

(The DoA games suffer from this as well.)

Uh, no.

And if you think color is the main part of ART DESIGN, you're very mistaken.

Although I disagree with Instigator a whole bunch, color is an extremely important aspect of art direction. It may not be the MAIN part, no, but wrongly applied it can quite literally destroy any inch of beauty to be had. It is at the very least of equal importance to other aspects.

There you go. I'm not asking people to agree with me, but I was not impressed with RE4 in terms of visuals. It's just an opinion, just like all the people putting the game on a pedestal. The engine is solid, but the end results turns me off.

Conversely, NG is much more colorful so the game has that going for it. The engine is also solid, producing smooth and sharp visuals. That's another positive. But my main gripe is not with art direction with NG, it's what is likely the impact of that high frame rate, giving you big but ultimately spartan and empty worlds.

Although being "colorful" is not the quality that makes appropriate color application beautiful. Because just as you can have too many drab, washed out colors for your liking, being too colorful can result in an equally repulsive gaudy/circus effect. And it's also important to take into account style when approaching color saturation.

GOW,RE4,and NG all are great but I have to hand it to Sony-God of War is *the game* for me so far this year. Sure hope we see a sequel on the PS3.
Wow, not only can you not read, but you still couldn't even give an answer of either of the choices presented. I mean, other people didn't read it either, but at least they chose between the two. Good work.

say what now?
Did I stutter? Ninja Gaiden is a graphically superior game, technically speaking. I'd agree that RE4 may have better art direction, but that's not what we're discussing here.

Why state the obvious? :)

i think lightning in NG looks exactly the way it's supposed to.
A lot of people complained about circle shadows etc, but i think everything fits NG arcadeish style; anything more realistic wouldn't have suited, imho, it's just perfect the way it is, except for the airship stage which i think could have been done better.

Having said that, RE4 and NG are two of the most beautiful games this gen, i'd go with RE4 because of its 'scope' ; there's so much to see, there are corridors you're only going to see once in the game and even those are unique (ie, they don't recycle textures and models from other locations) and incredibly detailed.

Better looking game = Ninja Gaiden

Greater technical achievement (considering the hardware) = Resident Evil 4

Color is very important, but good usage of color should never immediately imply that you are using the entire rainbow. I actually love games which stick to certain palettes (like MGS2/3, RE4, Silent Hill, ICO, etc.)
