Nintendo confirms - No VRR for Switch 2 in TV mode

This kind of topic always puts me in the minority on GAF.... we've never owned a VRR tv nor a 4K one for that matter, nor are any of our TVs larger than what would be called a medium size. I hate seeing wall-sized TVs in living rooms, and I've never kept a set for less than 15 years before replacing. TV-maxxing is weird to me.

Also, the "primary" mode for Switch 1/2 has always been handheld, and that's where the majority of play happens. Most families only put it on the TV when doing multiplayer and party games. I've seen this pattern firsthand a million times since we interact with a ton of Switch owners who are all families with kids like ours. The dock is generally treated more like a special tv-out convenience when you want to show something off or do 2-player local.

15 years ago the best TV was like a 50" 1080p plasma which likely looks like shit now because it lost all its brightness. I'm not saying that you need to get a new TV every year but I replaced one I bought in 2017 when the PS4 Pro came out and the difference is enormous. The tech did not evolve fast when we had CRTs but it has this century.

And Nintendo's data shows that Switch was used roughly evenly between handheld and docked.

ps5 VRR take years nothing burgers with bacons cheese frys pepsi annnnd porbably milkshack

Is it the same though?

Sony promised it was coming.

Nitendo haven't.

Not to say it won't be coming to switch 2 unless of course it's a hardware issue.

Brother, sorry to be "that" guy but, just 'cause you don't have/use or need a VRR capable TV it means that Ninty - as usual - should skimp on these features and/or that it's OK for them to do so ? C'mon now...

The PS5 was blasted to hell and back for not featuring VRR for almost a whole year after its release, but somehow, we should give Nintendo a pass because...?

Regarding the handheld mode now, don't you find it funny that it's actually supported but - again - not so when you dock it ?

Let's be real man, this is yet another Nintendo bullshit due to them being cheap as usual - I don't see why they wouldn't be able to use a HDMI to HDMI supported dock, all these friggin' adapters have always had limitations (Samsung DEX users should be able to tell you about it).

Heck, people keep blasting the PS Portal, a 200 Eurodollars streaming device for a lack of BT and wifi6, but apparently, Nintendo with their almost 500 Eurodollars 2025 console are off limits when it comes to criticism...

I don't get it

You're not getting docked G-Sync either. You can thank Nintendo for cheaping out and going with HDMI 2.0 in 2025.
They can't be using HDMI 2.0. The console can output HDR. Pretty sure some games are from 60fps to 120fps.

Give me a break. The whole point of Switch is you can play it as a handheld or a traditional console. Switch Lite is by far the least popular model.

Like it's some weird niche use case to play Tears of the Kingdom, Metroid Prime 4, Hogwarts Legacy, Cyberpunk 2077 etc on a big TV.

The ps5 launched with an hdmi 2.1 port. I'm pretty sure that the switch 2 dosen't have an hdmi 2.1 port at all but someone can correct me if i'm wrong. I don't think the switch 2 is even capable of VRR in docked mode tbh.
PS5 doesn't use DP internally and convert it to HDMI through USB lol

Is going to be G-Sync only when docked until Nintendo resolves the issue.
Yeah, my assumption, VRR is an HDMI standard, the one everyone having issues with, Freesync and Gsync are another matter and I hope it has support for any of them since it has Gsync support in portable through DP anyway. I'm gonna start thinking many companies won't care about VRR and just truly on other standards at any moment

Nintendo are the biggest joke in the industry. We're in the year 2025 where VRR has been the standard for YEARSSSSS and they're launching a new console without VRR in docked mode. Holy shit what an embarrassment and i don't wanna see one person defending clown crap like this.

Not to defend Nintendo, but VRR the standard for years? On Xbox yes, but on PS5 just very few select titles/graphic modes

Didn't Nintendo thenmselves release data of the docked/handheld split showing it to be about 50/50?

I know, I know. Your anecdotal evidence, and preferences, override everything. Very good user name btw.

I personally held on to an old 1080p 47" set that is just about perfect for Switch games like Zelda. But because I'm not ridiculous, I don't project this upon the whole world of normal people with a normal living room rocking a $300 55"-65" TV from Walmart and want to be able to drop Zelda on it without looking like artifacts swimming in vaseline.

The only issue is a lot of tvs doesn't support Gsync, especially the olders one…

I never use VRR because it always pushes the black point up on the display a few notches. That annoys me more than irregular frames.

I've played my Switch 1 in handheld mode like 99% of it's lifespan. But this still sucks.

I was using 4K 120hz with Gsync/VRR on my Samsung QN90A television paired with a 2080ti which only has HDMI 2.0 output. 8bit color no HDR.

I remember having to do the same when I upgraded my TV before the 2080ti. Was 8bit 4:2:0 if I recall, but hey, it worked for 120Hz at 4K through 2.0 for a few months (y)

Well majority will play it on handheld mode.
Doubt it. If Nintendo's old Switch statistics are anything to go by "only" ~30% of users play exclusively in handheld mode.

And the Switch Lite only accounts for ~17% of all Switch (1) sales.

With the Switch 2 having more power and actually being able to output 4K and such I'd think more people would be incentivized to play on their TV's this time rather than the other way around.

which people keep bashing all these things?. People on here or other niche sites. I think outside of core hobby gamers nobody actually cares or even notices.

The best feature of Nintendo Switch is it allows Nintendo fanboys call it either a console or a handheld, depending on whatever argument they're trying to win.

Sells better than other consoles? "Best selling console of the generation!!"

Lacks features you expect from a console? "Weird that you'd expect that when it's primarily a handheld"

Right, I'm pretty sure all the "normies®" were thrilled to hear that they had to buy a 200 Eurodollars headset for their portal if they wanted a wireless solution, or the "normies®" that had just spent 1000++ Eurodollars on a "latest and greatest" 4K TV back in 2020 to use it with their shiny PS quintuple to hear that their shiny new toy couldn't do VRR - even more so if they were unlucky enough to get the Sony XH900 which was botched since its inception due to the shitty mediatek SOC (if you know you know).

So yeah, while there may be tech illiterate people out there, most of them do care about this shit whether you agree or not.
