Nintendo Downloads - May 2009 (VC / WiiWare / DSiWare)

So can we actually finally say that Nintendo is making non-games now without being snarky? :lol

You can use the clock to countdown to when Nintendo will release something worthwhile. 10 points for everytime the small hand and big hand reach the "12" at the same time. Use the calculator to keep track of your points.

Wow. I came home from work today and was filled with delight because I could come into this thread to see what exciting new DSi releases were unleashed! I was looking forward to spending some points on a great bite-sized game that would entertain me between play sessions of my retail games. Then of course, I was overcome with disgust yet again.

A calculator and a clock, are you kidding me? Even something as little as Bird & Beans or Paper Plane Chase would have kept me happy, but holy crap! I would assume that the majority of people using the DSiWare store are more hardcore users and wouldn't even consider buying most of the shovelware that has been put up. I don't understand this nonsense!!

Grass is green, water is wet, the sky is blue and the weekly update for Nintendo's digital download service sucks. I basically expect Wii Ware and VC releases to be awful but I was half hoping for some interesting DSi Ware. Foolish of me.

The saddest part of all of this is that there are going to be some suckers that buy the clock and calculator, encouraging Nintendo to release variants for every one of their franchises.

Well if it's a pathway leading to customizable and downloadable DSi themes then count me IN dammit!

at this rate, i think i won't spend a single point from the free 1000 points they gave away.

i still don't understand how they can't release games that are already ready (Zelda MM). even a monkey would be smarter than this..

Well, I bought the clock. Maybe I'm a tool, but $2 is next-to-nothing, even for me, and I'm broke all the time. I'll post my thoughts in the impressions thread.

Why?

There's already a goddamn clock on the main menu.

I assume that you have a cellphone. It has a clock on it.

What possible situation exists where you would need to turn on your DSi, ignore the clock right there on the main menu, and go into a separate clock application?

First of all I don't have a cell phone, but that's really not relevant.

Secondly, the built in Alarm Clock isn't on the main menu, it's buried in the system settings.

And yeah, I could use that, but if I want to pay a measly two bucks for a clock that has a more appealing interface and three customizable alarms instead of the one default alarm, then I guess that's my prerogative, isn't it?

I think that at the moment it seems as though Nintendo are going to have a fairly thin lineup of DSiWare and are looking for third parties to take up the slack, just as with WiiWare. Unfortunately, they don't seem to have got many third parties on board for the launch period so all the US - and Europe - are getting are the few third party games that were ready with Nintendo filling in the gaping holes with the small selection of games and apps they've got available (and that translate easily for a Western audience).

DSiWare in Japan has slowly improved and I imagine that the same will happen in the West, but there's no denying they've handled the launch period badly.

Why did I buy the DSi again? Seriously fucking Animal Crossing Clock and Calculator?

Hey Nintendo! WHERE ARE THE FUCKING GAMES?!!

I'm not talking bit and pieces from your other games, I'm talking originals. Where the fuck are they?!

If they keep this up, the iPhone/iPod Touch really will be the best portable gaming system on the market. (It already beats PSP IMO)

This is pretty much how I see it too. What are there, two confirmed western developers onboard? Hell, I'm surprised they're still giving us two DSiWare titles per week. Even looking at the Japanese DSiWare list, there's simply not that much yet.

Personally I look at Mighty Flip Champs specifically and I see hope for the service. It reminds me of LostWinds... before there was really much on WiiWare, there was this one gem up there showing us that the possibilities are there for great games.

I really hope when MFC comes out that others will be as stoked as I am, and put their money where their mouth is and buy what looks to be a great DSiWare game. I'm sure many of us would love to see Shantae hit DSiWare as a result.

main menu - > system settings -> alarm
main menu -> animal crossing alarm

one click saved

and it's our prerogative to make fun of you for buying such junk. feel free to paypal me two bucks.

Nintendo, you are charging for a clock and calculator? WTF? Doesn't the DSi already have a built in clock and calendar that can be viewed?
No. They took it out in the DSi....(top screen is now a placeholder for any DSi photos)

Nintendo's just waiting for everyone to use up their free 1000 points by accident.

This is one game of chicken I am not going to lose.
I've got an iron fist on my 1000 points.

I hope you remember that the DS still plays DS games.

Actually a superior calendar is in the Photo/Camera section. You can even make written memos for any day you want.

Why would I want to give you two bucks? It takes you an extra click to wake up in the morning! ;)

I would use the memo feature a lot more if it would give some hint on the main menu that there's a memo for the day, or even show the memo somewhere, like on the bottom screen.

I've asked Nintendo a million times why Virtual Console sucks, and every time I ask them I get up the next Monday and it's even worse. If I mention anything at E3, we're all going to wake up and they'll have handed over complete control of the service to Mythicon.

I'm starting to think it's a good thing I didn't remember to apply for the VC/WiiWare content editor position at NOA. I'd hate to have to deal with an angry Kobun.

Get Big Bang Mini. You can unlock one.
I have the game, haven't unlocked an alarm clock. Whatever stage I got to last was kicking my butt. :( Not exactly convenient to have to swap game cards for an alarm clock though... hopefully in the future they can install things like that as bonuses, sorta like the Wii Fit and Mario Kart Channels on Wii. Buy a Castlevania game, get the boss rush mode installed to your system for no-cart play? I'd love stuff like that.

Sadly, I got the clock too, since I had 300 points left and there doesn't seem to be anything on the horizon to get for that much.

It's cute, kinda nice having it on my desk instead of my boring normal clock. :lol
But maybe I should have waited for the Mario one instead, since it seems to be more interactive than this.

Yo dawg I heard you like Tom Nook's abuse so we put a clock in your watch so you can check time on your watch while looking at your clock.

Dear Nintendo, open up DSiWare, release an SDK, collect 30-50% for every app/game sold. We'll provide the content if you won't.

Wow, that would be............ not Nintendo-like. But awesome. What are the downsides to that for Nintendo that ensure it will never happen? Does it promote piracy or something?

You might get a little fiasco, such as iPhone's "Baby Shaker," an app where you shook a crying baby until it died, where consumers hooted and hollered until Apple pulled it down.

Since consumers are stupid, they'll probably blame Nintendo instead of rationally seeing how the market functions and blaming poor-taste on the developers.

Where is Cave Story FFS?

I bet they release it the same bloody week as Majora's just so I sit here for weeks not downloading things then they make me download/try and play 2 at once. >_>

I do and will always love Nintendo without question, but at this point I can't figure out why I bought a DSi. :lol Give us something worthwhile. >_>

At least a Virtual Handheld, do it!

Bit.Trip.Beat sequel is announced: Bit.Trip.Core
Preview of this game is out there now.

Someone should post a new topic about this game, a lot of people love the first one.

My parents (casuals) seemed interested in the Penguin game when I was doing my weekly update check. I always check the updates on my Wii first so I can guess how big the GAF meltdown is going to be, and I was right in predicting that it was going to be bigger than usual this week. No new video for DSiWare on the Nintendo Channel was a huge warning light that whatever DSiWare was this week was bad, and it was. I keep having to tell my friends interested in DSis, "Well, there's nothing good on DSiWare so far, but there will be soon!"

That's a failure of Apple's checking of their app store. It's not completely open. There is often a long gap (many say too long) when your app gets checked by Apple before it appears on the store.

Nintendo is pretty two faced with regard to the openness of their platform. On one hand if you bring up the "Nintendo Seal of Quality" they'll flip flop on it and say that it just means that it's licensed for the Nintendo console, but then if they're not concerned about quality why not open up the platform more so anyone can develop? Instead they keep things closed to Nintendo developers and releases to a slow N64esque trickle of "quality not quantity."

Damn, I can't even remember the last time I got excited about a VC/WiiWare download....what was it, world of goo?

This is some sorry shit Nintendo. WTF is really going on??

Hopefully they are saving a bunch of stuff for E3 and we'll then have so much awesome shit that we won't know what to do with it all.
