Nintendo E3 2012 Conference Thread

I'll admit that I was slightly disappointed that the conference did match a dream I had, but seeing as that dream involved Reggie and Iwata coming on stage in tribal dress with giant Mii mask and WiiU Gamepads covering their groins, chanting "Games for the Game God" while Matt Casablanca was dragged on to the stage for a sacrifice screaming with the stream cutting out as he is being lowered into a pit, I'm not surprised.

Wut

hah

Interesting article about Iwata actually:
Despite being the public face of Nintendo, few know much about him, even within Nintendo. His official bio has just five sentences.

"I don't think he's fully understood because the company is not fully understood," said P.J. McNealy, a consultant at Digital World Research in Boston. "To understand Iwata is to understand Nintendo. The two are one and the same."

It's funny that the article says that people don't understand Nintendo. Nintendo under Iwata's watch has always tried to be open about its philosophy, but the industry just doesn't receive or get it for whatever reason.

Is anyone else expecting a Wii U reveal to be tacked on to the end of the 3DS conference later, perhaps as a response to the wave of negativity their press conference received or perhaps planned.

Did anyone else feel the 3DS bit during the conference was tacked on and seemed very last minute or was it just me?
Could be, it didn't fit with the scheduled split between Wii U and 3DS, there are rumors that Alien CM was pulled pretty late, and the guy seemed quite nervous.

Just watched the Wii U Trailer Showcase from the Nintendo site. They should have used the girl from that video instead of Reggie for the conference. So much better.

I'm a pig. I giggled when you saw her, she spread her arms and it said "All access".

But yeah she's much better than Reggie. He was only ever cool when he was about kicking ass and taking names, and that was, what, eight years ago?

only if it had analog triggers; I really would like to know how racers are going to be played on the system; I can only ask:

Why?

What's the source on it not having analog triggers btw? I can hardly believe it, seeing as the gamecube did have them, and them clearly being portrayed in the video as triggers, and not buttons.

I don't think that the Wii U really advances gaming beyond any current hardware.

The Wii U, Vita and 3DS are three recent systems that have completely failed to capture my imagination. They seem like logical evolutions of their predecessors but there's nothing about them that's particularly new or exciting. Right now I'm happy to skip all three.

My predication is that NintendoLand will be excellent. It isn't what we're looking for, but I expect it to be a phenomenal social experience.

In other news, Jeremy Parish looks ridiculous in that photo.

The thing I disliked the most about the conference was just general lack of launch information. I don't even think Reggie confirmed a 2012 launch date. They didn't talk price, colors, availability, anything. A complete failure if they're still going to launch this fall/holiday.

From that article

As Oli Welsh said when he actually got to play it, "in many ways Nintendo Land shows the Kyoto developers at their best: realising new gameplay ideas with clarity, perfecting tactile control schemes and designing with clever restraint." When viewed dispassionately, there was lots of evidence of that throughout Nintendo's conference.

Oh look. It might actually be a good game!

Yeah, once again we must wait for the sweat smelling cloud of internet nerd-rage to go away before we fairly and objectively look at what was presented.

Platinum's game is a perfect example of a fantastic concept caught in the middle of the typical power race, e-penis contest shit that clogs up the same message boards that laugh at COD's plots because they are aimed at people that need flashy crap happening all the time to keep on hooked.
Or how about how people make fun of Heavy Rain for barely being a game, and then proceed to jizz all over the place when they throw them another interactive movie just because it looks good. But hey, its good ammo for the graphics contest so go Quantic

Go read the first pages of Kamiya's game here. Fucking pathetic.

I don't get people saying there are no games. There are 40 different games in the launch window alone. Nintendo also has 9 first party published titles within the launch period. This is unprecedented.

After the E3 where the 3DS was revealed, there were loads of games that weren't out on launch. People complained, saying they were teased with these games and they weren't delivered, so Nintendo went and revealed launch window stuff only and you're still complaining. Yes, they probably should have shown some of the stuff they're working on, but people would have been confused.

You also need to realise that the casual market IS a big part of gaming now. While they cater for the core (Pikmin, Mario, Batman, Mass effect, ZombiU etc.), they also cater for the casual. To not cater for the casual, in this day and age, is suicide. You may not like it, but it has to be done.

Finally, as for specs, NO company releases precise specs prior to launch. Typically, the actual specs of a console are found after certain places, such as Digital Foundry, manage to get their hands on the console and take it apart. Stop acting like Nintendo has sinned in not revealing them.

Quote from the Wii U Facebook page.
Amen.

Agreed. And where was Iwata?? He was supposed to bring the bomb, maybe that's why the conference was so bad, Iwata missed the flight ;P

Is it me o Batman looks worse than PS3/360 versions ?
Can't tell, which is bad enough when they didn't manage to wow us with the use of the controller screen.

Zombie U is a must-have though. And being able to transfer VC titles from Wii to WiiU. So it wasn't all bad even though I've probably never been this disappointed in an E3 conference.

Haha, brilliant.

It's a shame, since I think it looks pretty fun.

NintendoLand as well, however both will be regarded in a negative light because of the conference, sadly.

Now I almost feel sorry for him looking at that last pic :(

Probably already talked about, but what would have saved the conference? Personally I missed something about Metroid and Zelda, a teaser would've been enough. And I wanted more wow-factor games like Zombie U from third parties. And better graphics in the first party games too, Pikmin 3 looked nice but the rest felt more like the "free" bonus Wii Play titles than something worth spending money on.

That is a brilliant article that perfectly distills what Nintendo have done with that conference. Eurogamer are the Edge magazine of the online medium. I think it's even worse than he implies though, personally.

While its certainly true that people are probably crapping on NintendoLand out of anger, I wouldn't say that NintendoLand and P100 being good games defuses legitimate complaints and concerns about the console. Those complaints and doubts didn't exist going into the conference, they do now. That's on Nintendo and their PR team, nobody else. I think you're wrong to characterise it as a graphics thing. People were just expecting to see what Nintendo and others have been up to aside from those minigames that we saw last year... the information vacuum has existed for over a year, and they did very little to fill it; the relative absence of huge players like EA and activision is a cause for concern and dismay. Whether they're coming on board in a big way or not, they've given the impression of third party indifference. I haven't seen a console launch with poor EA support since the Dreamcast. Even Nintendo need that kind of support.

Poor Iwata in that pic. :(

How likely is it that they simply didn't have much stuff to show? Things certainly seemed to be dragged out, and they talked for ages on such nonsense.

Also it's a shame the Wii branded games have the same visual style, it wouldn't have been hard to add some bells and whistles here and there.
