I really don't understand people sometimes. On the one hand, we bitch and moan about Nintendo not keeping up with the times and developing a robust internet solution for its hardware. On the other hand, we cry in anger, anguish and despair when Nintendo decides to shut down NWC, which is the online gaming equivalent of the 8-track cassette player, at this point.
Seriously, it's been more than 8 years, we've surely picked all the meat of the bones of this carcass, it's time to move on, especially if it means there can be a greater focus on Nintendo Network. I can only hope Wii Shop Channel is next to meet the axe.
So basically they'll kill off Mario Kart Wii's online ten days before MK8. Even though Brawl sucks for online, I hope it's not a habit for them to be killing off communities. Imagine if Melee was online and they killed it because Brawl came out...
I'm confused... I keep being told it's impossible to have online communities on an antiquated online gaming service because "lol friend codes", and an XBL-like solution is mandatory. This indicates the opposite. You'll have to forgive me, which statement is the correct one?
Yeah I still haven't played my copy. Same with Animal Crossing.
Sad that I'm so far behind on my backlog that online servers are starting to actually go down for my unplayed games. I used to just worry that I'd never find anyone to play them with.
The simple solution is that intentionally-multiplayer games (fighters, racers, party games, etc.) don't belong in backlogs. EVER. That's where single-player games go.
Dear Nintendo,
Most companies shut down servers for dead games but keep them up for active games. You should try that sometime instead of just shutting down all the servers at the same time.
Sincerely,
A Lot of People
Someone should probably define what an "active" game is in this context. What sort of metric does it have to meet?
I only ask because, again, I'm confused... isn't there supposed to be dust collecting on everyone's Wii console by now?
