Nintendo Ending Wi-Fi Connection Worldwide on May 20th

It actually lasted longer than Live for the original Xbox. And you'll still be able to download your content. It's just the multiplayer matchmaking.

That's not entirely true though, stuff like the layton games being listed presumably refers to accessing the download puzzles, which make up a fair amount of content that will be permanently lost.

You can still do LAN stuff in Pokemon etc. Right? I'm stressing out. Got until Spring/summer to clear out the remaining Wi-Fi and GFWL games before it all burns to the ground.

I really don't understand people sometimes. On the one hand, we bitch and moan about Nintendo not keeping up with the times and developing a robust internet solution for its hardware. On the other hand, we cry in anger, anguish and despair when Nintendo decides to shut down NWC, which is the online gaming equivalent of the 8-track cassette player, at this point.

Seriously, it's been more than 8 years, we've surely picked all the meat of the bones of this carcass, it's time to move on, especially if it means there can be a greater focus on Nintendo Network. I can only hope Wii Shop Channel is next to meet the axe.

So basically they'll kill off Mario Kart Wii's online ten days before MK8. Even though Brawl sucks for online, I hope it's not a habit for them to be killing off communities. Imagine if Melee was online and they killed it because Brawl came out...

I'm confused... I keep being told it's impossible to have online communities on an antiquated online gaming service because "lol friend codes", and an XBL-like solution is mandatory. This indicates the opposite. You'll have to forgive me, which statement is the correct one?

Yeah I still haven't played my copy. Same with Animal Crossing.

Sad that I'm so far behind on my backlog that online servers are starting to actually go down for my unplayed games. I used to just worry that I'd never find anyone to play them with.

The simple solution is that intentionally-multiplayer games (fighters, racers, party games, etc.) don't belong in backlogs. EVER. That's where single-player games go.

Dear Nintendo,

Most companies shut down servers for dead games but keep them up for active games. You should try that sometime instead of just shutting down all the servers at the same time.

Sincerely,
A Lot of People

Someone should probably define what an "active" game is in this context. What sort of metric does it have to meet?

I only ask because, again, I'm confused... isn't there supposed to be dust collecting on everyone's Wii console by now?

I was thinking actual DLC that uses the Wii Shop infrastructure to download. I imagine those games aren't using that infrastructure for their in-game downloads.

Like, for Rock Band, I'm assuming all the songs will still be downloadable and redownloadable, but no online play and no ability to download setlists made by Harmonix or friends in RB3.

Online MarioKart is being killed on both DS and Wii prior to MarioKart 8...

When I said I wanted more features like Microsoft offered, this isn't what I meant, Nintendo.

Where's my replacement for Tetris DS?

I can only hope Wii Shop Channel is next to meet the axe.

Well I sure hope they have something to replace it or a means to link to your NNID when it ever happens. It would be a customer service nightmare for people to lose access to their purchased games simply due to the Wii's tiny storage capabilities.

wait

this means Phantasy Star Zero loses online too? I don't know how this works but even 3rd parties are affected by this, right? :(

R.I.P. DQIX VC store. Sellma am closing for good. ;_;

Guess I need ta buy a cheap second copy in order ta be able to replay the *full* DQIX story some day. Them story-centered DLC quests really did add to the game~

I know right? I had so much stuff to buy in the store too since I got game way late, plus I wanted to restart with a new save and purchase everything. ;_;

That's insanely early, Nintendo, especially since we're getting DS games on Wii U.

Also makes me weary that this'll happen to Wii U's online.

Oh dear.

Is the Picross DLC unlocked from the cart and could it be unlocked with an action replay and the likes or is that stuff actually downloaded? From what I understand the US version has all the good stuff and I don't have that one atm. :/

Seriously, it's been more than 8 years
8 years for the oldest games that used the service. 7/6/5/4/3/2/1 years for others! Besides we can also be yelling at parties other then nintendo. Like Squeenix who decided ta lock substantial mid & post-game content in Dragon Quest IX behind an online check -_-

Sure seems thats the way its gonna work. Them lists Nintendo put up have 3rd party stuff in 'em so I imagine every game with Nintendo Wifi Connection on the box are getting axed. At least Phantasy Star Portable 2 is still online... I think?

PSP online lived longer the DS. Go figure!

Ya me to. I mean I played it since day one but after beating the game played it very on/offy an even when I got heavily into it I rarely remembered ta check the shop each week nevermind each day! But I did an still do use the DQVC shop! Rare (unobtainable otherwise?) stuff "cheap" was always useful!

You're confused because you have a problem assuming that everyone simultaneously holds multiple contradictory opinions rather than taking everyone as individuals.

There. I solved your problem.

I hear Smash Bros. and Pokemon are popular games.

lol oh that terrell!

is that game released here and is it worth trying?

Is there a way to archive all of Daigasso Band Bros DX stuff with homebrew? That's a lot of songs that will just go away.

Well that's shit. Does this effect the DSi to 3DS transfer? I haven't done it yet, because it doesn't carry over the save data to my knowledge, but I have may reconsider if I won't get another chance.

Also, this means that there will be no more Falcon Knights in Fire Emblem. The only way to get the promotion item was from the stupid online shop.

Not OK. For as little service as Nintendo offers, they shouldn't be killing it for games released just a few years ago.

Can't help but notice DS games losing online service prior to releasing them on Wii U Virtual Console, as well...

PSP2 Infinity was japan-only 'cause Segac sucks but PSP2 saw release in all major places. It was real fun an added lotsa new items/areas PSU didn't have, an major changes to game mechanics with the addition of abilities, stripping back classes to just 4, gaurding/dodging, etc.

I feel so sad.
Mario Kart Wii was my most played game.
It has such a healthy online community.. it's really a shame they're killing it.
I guess I'll try my best to get 9999br before they officially shut it down.

hey guys did you know you can still play dreamcast games online via private servers? lol

interesting, shame i cant read japanese

weekely from game launch. if you connect now you will download them all

DO IT NOW!!!!
The bigger issue is that you need to start the games and make a bit of headway first. If I didn't need to I'd have gotten Game 4's puzzles ASAP.

I thought Nintendo's online policy couldn't get shittier. I was wrong.
To be fair this time it sounds very plausible that it's more Glu Mobile. They were apparently complete asses when they took over GameSpy Technology, who proceeded to hijack costs and shut down servers. Nintendo was probably better able to deal with them than a small publisher or one that's apathetic, but likely it's just a terrible deal that's not worth investing in, and while you can say it's not right for Nintendo to just let it die for financial reasons at the same time it's more wrong for a company to come in and completely screw over everyone that had licenses before.

Really pissed off. I can understand shutting down the inactive servers, but B2/W2 are only two years old and still pretty active afaik. I still play relatively regularly with my friends that have moved away. They're in university and can't afford to spend money on a 3DS so X/Y isn't a legitimate solution.

Legitimately worried for the future of Pokémon Bank now. Will it even transfer over to next gen?

Well, if the communities are still as active as some people proclaim here, they should just pony up some money. Mario Kart Wii sold over 30 million so it is not like they didn't make any money from it.

It sucks but it's the industry standard so what can you do? Shutting down Mario Kart Wii servers only gives initiative for users to move to newer games.

On the plus side, at least Nintendo's online is free for all systems. Makes the sting a bit easier than paying an entire generation for online play just to have it shut down.

Hopefully MK8'll have good netcode, because the Wii game ran great online and I don't want a downgrade. Most other Wii games ran like crap though.

Not being able to trade on Pokemon anymore sucks though.

Damn, I still haven't picked up the Dragon Quest IX DLC. Been meaning to for months.

This wouldn't be so frustrating if it wasn't for the fact that every game gets shut down at the same time. Especially the Pokemon games...B/W 2 do not deserve to have this short of a run. The shutdown of the Global Link was a pain, and made it impossible to obtain all the medals in the game, but that doesn't really matter. But I've been trying to complete the national Pokedex for a while now, and I'm gonna have to buy "opposite copies" like Heart Gold simply for stuff like the Johto starters.

I had a short panic when I thought about Animal Crossing City Folk, and if you needed a friend to visit your town to unlock Nookingtons. Luckily, you don't - that was only for Wild World, which has local multiplayer. So it's nice to see that they thought ahead. I feel bad for Mario Kart and Smash Bros fans (you could play Project M online?).

The end of an era. Wii Online may not have had much in the way of bells and whistles, but it worked. I actually enjoyed brawl online, even with the lag.

I know they want people to pick up the new MK, but why kill off the online mode for a Mario Kart that actually still has sales momentum even to this day :/

It also has a pretty strong community who are gutted about this.

Why would Poké Transporter be impact by this? It works with Pokémon Bank, which is a Nintendo Network service, so transfers won't be interrupted at all.

What Poké Transporter does is access data on your cartridge, take it, and then transfer it over the internet (via the Nintendo Network servers). The game itself doesn't connect to anything, only the app does... and it does so with the game locally.

Man, this is sad, expected but sad.
I played several hours (well, over 300h) online on Mario Strikers Charged and I will really miss those times.

However, Wii & NDS are fully hacked consoles, we can reverse engineer the binaries to go through the netcode. We can dump the network traffic also. I mean, it's a tough task but it's possible to write some kind of "private server", depending of the considered game of course.

I'm sure I've read about a guy who was reverse engineering the MKDS netcode.

I've had to answer so many questions about this today. So many people misunderstanding it :/

I don't see the big deal here. Company-owned servers of any online game need to be shut down eventually. Nintendo, in the situation they're in currently, needs to cut costs ASAP.

I think it'll be a long time before they shut down the Wii Shop Channel, since they still get revenue from VC and WiiWare sales.

Well, Nintendo should put some messages everywhere (Facebook, Twitter, official Pokémon website, SpotPass, etc...) to clarify things, otherwise people will keep freaking out.
