Nintendo files patent for in-game missions, achievements and rewards

...they...can't get away... patenting everything...

Why Not patent videogames as a whole?

Is this a multi Season thing with the climax at the end where they own "Playing Video Games" as well as "Not playing Video Games" having you in a perpetual state of paying

The patent thing aside, Nintendo have been against achievements for a very long time, even in interviews.

Occasionally some of their games include them, like Pikmin 3 Deluxe. Bayonetta while a third party, also has achievements.

Anyways, switch online already has this system. They have tasks where you play a game and you get platinum points.

Why insert achievements in your games when you can patent them so none can use them anymore? Work smarter, not harder.

Nintendo file a patent for video games

I was going to buy a NS2 this holidays, but changed my mind, Nintendo doesn't deserve my money, ll buy second hand games and play it on Yuzu2 once it come out.

Ok, as much as like dissing nintendo this title is misleading.

This is entirely about some specific achievement system they're making and has nothing to do with the game itself or the GTA-style missions some must have thought about.

Players will be tasked with completing specific in-game goals that are beyond what the game itself asks, and then they'll be rewarded for accomplishing them.
Ubisoft
It seems that Nintendo is taking a multi-faceted approach to their achievements setup, as gamers will get digital rewards and points for clearing out objectives.
Ubisoft
Sometimes you'll tackle a mission and get points, while other times you'll earn something like an icon or wallpaper.
Ubisoft and Microsoft
You'll also be able to use these points to cash in and purchase rewards.

Will this come around to bite Nintendo later? They seem to be nervously hedging against other companies selling more games than they deem necessary.

But this covers a lot of companies and some of them are bigger than Nintendo.

You guys are just jealous that Nintendo are the only visionaries left in this entire industry.

Why are they patenting things the Xbox 360 introduced 20 years ago? Even right down to eating gamer pics and items for doing things in game.

I never thought Nintendo Lawyers could go on offensive more than they already do.

They should patent that unique thumb motion where you apply force and press a button.

As usual, any talk of patents on a videogame forum veers right into retardation because people don't read the patent or even the article. The article clearly says this system links to rewards like icons and wallpapers, which they already are doing and have been doing for years. It's not patenting "achievements."

Yeah, this thread is a literacy test. They're just patenting a new twist on their existing platinum points system. This patent could be paving the way for a more comprehensive achievements system on Nintendo platforms, but it's too narrow and specific to be used to shut down achievement systems on other platforms.

The new twist isn't new since ms did it with the 360 and ubisoft started doing it since they launched uplay.

It's tricky, because patent language is often opaque, but I think what's being patented here isn't so much the idea of in-game missions granting system-wide rewards as the way that it's integrated into the larger achievements system. That's why a big chunk of the patent is a flow chart.

It doesn't matter, they shouldnt get patents for shit like this. Its really stupid, and I was right to not go for a fucking s2. Fuck them.

I would like to see how it differs from the way Sony and Microsoft currently process their achievements/trophies/rewards.

edit - Before everyone gets bent out of shape, Sony and Microsoft do own patents for their systems as well. I am just curious how they differ. I could probably look them up but I don't care that much. :messenger_squinting_tongue:

I'm all for that. I like their platinum point system already. You can redeem points for fun little rewards, similar to the old Club Nintendo.

I'm still mad I missed out on this. https://www.nintendo.com/us/store/p...er-mario-bros-3-desktop-metal-display-125430/

what they patented is not at all like cheevos or trophies.

Well, Microsoft filed a patent for their cheevo system (which is probably expiring soon if it hasn't already) and one can offer rewards to the user tied to an achievement in multiple ways each of which can be patented separately. As I said, MS has a patent for cheevos and it didn't stop Sony from making trophies.

...who cares? The point is this isn't new, figure 5,6,7,15 in the patent are all things ubisoft already does in uplay and has been doing so since 2009, the nintendo points rewards thing didn't start until 2016.
The additional language like:
According to the above configuration, items that can be used in the entire system such as an image of a user icon can be provided to the user as rewards, rather than items that can be used directly in the game.
MS did that in 2006 with the 360, DOOM had achievements that unlocked gamerpics with that sweet "gamerpic unlocked" pop-up message; none of this shit is new, just trash patent trolling by a trash company.
