Nintendo patent points to in-game missions, achievements, rewards and more
Achievement unlocked?
UbisoftPlayers will be tasked with completing specific in-game goals that are beyond what the game itself asks, and then they'll be rewarded for accomplishing them.
UbisoftIt seems that Nintendo is taking a multi-faceted approach to their achievements setup, as gamers will get digital rewards and points for clearing out objectives.
Ubisoft and MicrosoftSometimes you'll tackle a mission and get points, while other times you'll earn something like an icon or wallpaper.
UbisoftYou'll also be able to use these points to cash in and purchase rewards.

Well, when I was growing up, no one used the phrase "play Videogames". It was always, "play Nintendo", even if you were playing a Sega, TurboGrafx or even playing games at the arcade.Nintendo file a patent for video games
They will destroy themselves first.i want nintendo to patent everything and destroy western video game companies
I believe you..Nintendo file a patent for video games
I was going to buy a NS2 this holidays, but changed my mind, Nintendo doesn't deserve my money, ll buy second hand games and play it on Yuzu2 once it come out.
As usual, any talk of patents on a videogame forum veers right into retardation because people don't read the patent or even the article. The article clearly says this system links to rewards like icons and wallpapers, which they already are doing and have been doing for years. It's not patenting "achievements."
The new twist isn't new since ms did it with the 360 and ubisoft started doing it since they launched uplay. They're just patenting a new twist on their existing platinum points system.
Have it be coins that you can check out in a vault wario-styleJokes aside, I hope Nintendo does come up with a new, interesting way of doing achievements

They did but it expired in the 2010s, it is as the + design and that's why MS jumped on that and used it for the Xbox One controllerDid Nintendo have a patent for the D-pad? They make the worst d-pads now.
Yeah, this thread is a literacy test. They're just patenting a new twist on their existing platinum points system. This patent could be paving the way for a more comprehensive achievements system on Nintendo platforms, but it's too narrow and specific to be used to shut down achievement systems on other platforms.
It's tricky, because patent language is often opaque, but I think what's being patented here isn't so much the idea of in-game missions granting system-wide rewards as the way that it's integrated into the larger achievements system. That's why a big chunk of the patent is a flow chart.
I'm all for that. I like their platinum point system already. You can redeem points for fun little rewards, similar to the old Club Nintendo.Yeah, this thread is a literacy test. what they patented is not at all like cheevos or trophies.I would like to see how it differs from the way Sony and Microsoft currently process their achievements/trophies/rewards.
edit - Before everyone gets bent out of shape, Sony and Microsoft do own patents for their systems as well. I am just curious how they differ. I could probably look them up but I don't care that much.![]()
Well, Microsoft filed a patent for their cheevo system (which is probably expiring soon if it hasn't already) and one can offer rewards to the user tied to an achievement in multiple ways each of which can be patented separately. As I said, MS has a patent for cheevos and it didn't stop Sony from making trophies. The new twist isn't new since ms did it with the 360 and ubisoft started doing it since they launched uplay.
...who cares? The point is this isn't new, figure 5,6,7,15 in the patent are all things ubisoft already does in uplay and has been doing so since 2009, the nintendo points rewards thing didn't start until 2016.Well, Microsoft filed a patent for their cheevo system (which is probably expiring soon if it hasn't already) and one can offer rewards to the user tied to an achievement in multiple ways each of which can be patented separately. MS did that in 2006 with the 360, DOOM had achievements that unlocked gamerpics with that sweet "gamerpic unlocked" pop-up message; none of this shit is new, just trash patent trolling by a trash company.According to the above configuration, items that can be used in the entire system such as an image of a user icon can be provided to the user as rewards, rather than items that can be used directly in the game.
