Nintendo files patent for in-game missions, achievements and rewards

Yeah, this thread is a literacy test. They're just patenting a new twist on their existing platinum points system. This patent could be paving the way for a more comprehensive achievements system on Nintendo platforms, but it's too narrow and specific to be used to shut down achievement systems on other platforms.
Didn't MS have a similar system back in 360 days though? Awarding Avatar stuff based on achievements.

Nintendo already has a system like this in place too with their platinum points, which is another reason why I think this patent is more about the specific structure of this achievement system than just "rewards for in-game missions":

It's tricky, because patent language is often opaque, but I think what's being patented here isn't so much the idea of in-game missions granting system-wide rewards as the way that it's integrated into the larger achievements system. That's why a big chunk of the patent is a flow chart.

This would never fly under Iwata's tenure.

Them having a non-gamedev CEO is a big mistake.
Short sighted and destructive policies.

As usual, any talk of patents on a videogame forum veers right into retardation because people don't read the patent or even the article. The article clearly says this system links to rewards like icons and wallpapers, which they already are doing and have been doing for years. It's not patenting "achievements."

Pretty much this.

To be honest, the trophy/achievement system is stale as fuck. Has barely changed since it was first introduced. If Nintendo has an idea for how to revolutionize that, I'm all for them trying it.

Them patenting their method of accomplishing it doesn't preclude anyone else from coming up with different ways to do similar things.

It's gross either way. There's no good rationale that makes them save face. Ubisoft and Rockstar should have patented open worlds so BOTW never happened.

Outrageous.

Both Ubisoft and Take Two have several patents for how they accomplish certain things in their games.

Threads like this really show how little most people understand what is happening and yet they so quickly form strong opinions about the things they don't understand.

Nintendo, as usual with most patents, has patented a very specific way of doing a very specific thing. Sony, microsoft, steam, Ubisoft, everyone, has also done the same thing with their achievement systems.

Nintendo file a patent for video games

I was going to buy a NS2 this holidays, but changed my mind, Nintendo doesn't deserve my money, ll buy second hand games and play it on Yuzu2 once it come out.
No you weren't.

Neither am I.

Nintendo games would lend themselves perfectly for achievements. Finishing their games is easy, even for small kids. But, they build them around getting 100% competition.

What?.... You mean people on here jumping the gun with this, and not looking at the wider context etc. I simply don't believe it lol. :)

Wtf, you just can't make this shit up. Why they aren't being laughed out of court is a bit disconcerting. Let's hope they get a good slap for overreaching. 🤞

Personally I would like Nintendo to have an achievement system and make it optional for those not a fan of such things.

Admittedly i was disappointed Switch 2 doesn't have one.

So, Iwata was the only President/CEO Nintendo's ever had who was a game developer earlier in their career. The Yamauchis were not either, and Nintendo did just fine before Iwata took over in 2002. I'd also point out Nintendo did just fine 2015-2018 under Kimishima (who Iwata groomed for a long time as a successor should he ever die/retire). So, a little bit of history and context is important to know, here. Nintendo being run by a "non-gamedev" is by no means a recent thing.

Also prolly worth it to point out that Iwata was a programmer and not a designer. He wasn't a creative. He helped solve technical issues. There are many higher-ups at Nintendo who were/are actual creatives/ designers. Such as Miyamoto. Who himself has been Senior Managing Director for decades now and also sits on the Board. Plenty of higher-ups there with software design experience who help call the shots.

And your a fucking idiot given thats EXACTLY what Ubisoft,Microsoft and Sony have all done for literally years…Nintendo did not start doing that until long after the others did 🤦‍♂️
Seriously get Nintendick out of your mouth ffs…

Method patents like this should have never been allowed in the first place, whether it's Nintendo, MS, Ubi, EA or whatever. If they want to patent their actual implementation through code of the said method, that's a different animal, but currently that portion of US, Japan, whatever Patent System is dumb.

You just proved him right in a hilariously ironic fashion.

Pretty sure m$ did something like that in 360. Certain games when you got it achievement would reward you with a item for your avatar

The patent thing aside, Nintendo have been against achievements for a very long time, even in interviews.

Occasionally some of their games include them, like Pikmin 3 Deluxe. Bayonetta while a third party, also has achievements.

Anyways, switch online already has this system. They have tasks where you play a game and you get platinum points.
Mid style system. They need to make a system like every other platform has and finally come to the new normal feature in the year 2025. I dont care about platinum points wallpaper. I want a badge showing i have completed the game and where my friends are roughly in said game. Achievements have also been more than just bragging rights. Skill issue people use that argument to to discredit them. Meanwhile those same people are using sites like backlog to mark what games they have completed etc. like imagine having a netflix or disney plus and when you click on the app it doesnt show you what movies you have completed or where you are at in the movie. Like bruh.
With Switch 2 nintendo were 90 percent right in their choices. The biggest mistake was not having achievements. I Gurantee you there would have been way more hype and chatter. Could you imagine xbox players saying they are maining switch 2 because its getting third party games and achievements. They can start the achievement hunt fresh on an actual living platform.
