Nintendo Online = Poorly Implemented

Nintendo Wi-Fi definitely could have been slicker, but it gets the job done and it's FREE. I know I appreciate that. They'll probably fix some of the matchmaking problems down the road.

Tying the game to one DS is a bit weird, but in that regard it's no different from something like PSO was on the DC, or much different from Xbox Live... You can't just go play Xbox Live with your account and game save data from another Xbox.

Blizzard says hi

I appreciate Blizzards efforts too and battle.net is my favorite PC setup but they aren't the whole of PC gaming online. Starcraft 2 is announced my opinion my change slightly.

Give them a break man, this is their first full blown online service. There are going to be bugs/slowdown and sloppy implementation in the intital games. The same as all online services are at the beginning.

Come on now... Nintendo has been messing with on-line gaming for 15 years. They also had a network adapter that came out in 2001. Don't be making excuses for these guys. Nintendo should have done a much better job. Nobody cut MS any slack when XBL arrived on scene... and nobody had to. It worked very well.

If Nintendo hadn't made such a big fuss about NOT going on-line back in 2001, then they wouldn't be receiving the negative feedback now. They raised the bar for themselves by saying they wanted it to be easier for consumers. They didn't deliver. Sure, getting Mario Kart on-line isn't rocket science... neither is XBL or PS2. In fact, Nintendo was stupid for saying it was difficult in the first place. However, Nintendo made it MORE difficult than it needed to be. So you got your WEP and friends into Mario Kart. Not as easy to do as XBL, but not difficult. Now, put in Animal Crossing... are your friends there? Is your WEP there? Hell no, you have to go through the process again and again and again.

I guess I'm just bitter that Nintendo had a bunch of excuses that everyone defended for not going on-line with GC... now that DS is on-line, suddenly those excuses don't apply and now we get to make up a whole new set of excuses for the not so optimal implementation.

Mrbob, have you even played a game over Nintendo Wi-Fi?

It's very easy to get online and it's a ton of fun. And it's inarguably easier to setup and play than Xbox Live. The featureset is not as roboust, but you can't claim NWiFi is more complicated.

Just what I've read. When I get my DS and Mario Kart I'll be online though.

Because one game is entirely indicative of Nintendo's complete online service. I guess the fact that MK/s wi-fi was tacked on had something to do with it. If you're going to fault Nintendo, it would be for not planning ahead enough in terms of implementing the online scheme for their marquee title, and thus suffering because of it.

I expect much improvement as time goes on and games that are actually designed around Nintendo WFC are made. As for comparing it to Xbox Live, I'm not going to get into that argument, nor do I consider it an argument of any consequence.

The online service offered through MK is ok. It isn't perfect but it is passable. The biggest problem with Nintendo they are approaching their online model with kids and face to face friends in mind. They aren't thinking along the lines of meet new people from anywhere in the world. They expect people to play locally and then swap friend codes then play them online when they are not around each other. While at the same time if you want to play with others you can and they make that easy, just go online and go into match making. The whole code thing is to protect kids from all of the pitfalls of online gaming(swearing, jerks, etc..) There is one simple thing that could be done to improve the online experience greatly. If they would just allow you to see who of your friends are online and how many people are online in each group (rival, regional, worldwide, friends). It's a simple correction that they can do in later games.

wait. you are complaining about a service you havent even tested yet?

You don't need to be a rocket scientist to piece things together by what people have wrote.

Mrbob said:
On the contrary, with a free service you'll have many more idiots online to ruin your fun. Enjoy!

Actually, given how limiting the online experience is, I think it's rather hard for people to ruin my fun online. There's not a lot they can do besides race.

no, but you at least need to try it berfore bitching about it :P

QFT.

I still can't believe I had to drop the transmission speed on my router to 2mbit/s just to play Mario Kart online.

this has nothing to do with the DS specifically.. welcome to the wonderful world of wifi.. one of the only technologies I have ever seen that hit primetime without being even close to ready for it. well, that and Star Wars Galaxies.

Yeah and those fees besides Live and the console exist solely for Xbox Live. Roll eyes that argument is weak. You forgot about the electric bill and the TV and surround sound system needed to play the games as well. May as well add it to the list. Oh and lets not forget about the money in gas it costs me to drive to the store and back to buy a game.
:lol

Mrboob made a funny :D

Totally unfair comparing XBL to NinWiFi though.

seriously .... MrBob you are pushing it.

you are complaining too much, for a person who
1) never tried the game or service
2) didn't even start this thread

I think the only thing I would change would to allow you to keep more than one WEP thingy in your memory. I have the exact same wireless Linksys G network at my office as I do at my apartment (my dad set them both up). Hell, they're even named the same thing. But, they have different WEP thingys. So, it would be nice to be able to toggle between the different WEP numbers instead of having to manually input them everytime.

The service is ghetto as hell. I didnt read the thread but i hope people arent trying to compare it to xbox live.

DS online shouldnt be compared.. but revolution online comparision has more validity.. ... when it comes.

If nintendo wants to REALLY get NWC a lot of users (both for DS and Rev), they should include the dongle with DS and Rev hardware purchases.

Umm... there are three connection slots... just put the second one with your works WEP and when it can't connect to the first setting it will jump right over to the second.

Considering it's a HANDHELD and playing online in free, I think it's a brilliant service. :) Rev will be the real test.

For all the bitching going on I have to say I myself am completely satisfied. It took me about 5 minutes to get into a race from the time I opened the box. Four of that was spent trying to remember the password for my base station to get the WEP. I don't really see the need for the whole friends thing at all. The only reason I ever wanted to have friends in a game is so I didn't have to comunicate with all the idiots out there. Since I can't comunicate with them I could care less who my opponent is. It actually rather nice.

I'm going to have to wait 'till Animal Crossing to see how things pan out for me. If all I have to do is buy the game and find a hot spot it's going to be very hard for me to find a reason to complain. Where exactly can I find these hot spots? I know a coffee shop in my local mall has a huge sign saying "Free Wi-fi." Would that be sufficient enough or do I need a specific location that's Nintendo approved?

The friends thing is obviously there so you can beat fellow forumers and then taunt them about it in stickied threads.

So now I'm curious. What has the better service, the DS or PSP?

This ain't a troll, by the way. I haven't tried either online, and wanna know.

It'll be questionable when AC comes out, but right now PSP.

So has anyone ever experienced cheaters? Someone said, that you can use Action Replay to drive through walls and have star-ability forever. BS eh?

True, however, they wanted everyone with MKDS to try WFC at least once.

So the mainstream will be able to try @ McDonalds while the more 'hardcore' gamers know that the stick is around/can play with there wireless routers/dongles.

If it's not protected you'll get online.

MFO, thanks. I figured out the 3 slots for the WEP after I posted that.

Anyway, now that I've messed around with it for a while there are definately some things that bug me. For one, why the fuck does it continually set up games with just two people? I swear it does this probably half the time. There's no reason why I shouldn't start every match with a full room. And second, the lack of any type of communication just sucks ass. I mean, it would be cool if you could have short messages like "Rematch?" or an option to go to a seperate room to swap friend codes.
