Nintendo Power 193 July 2005

New look is bland as hell...basically looks like every other gaming mag.

Starts off with an editorial and a mini-retrospective on Nintendo Power. This could have been interesting if it had been longer than a page and wasn't full of snide remarks that I suppose the editors thought were clever. E3 Preview (why do magazines bother with this sort of thing when the issue hits after E3 is over?) has nothing new. Another Zelda preview with lots of screens (dunno if they're new or not, but they sure are pretty) with lots of talk about the "darker tone" of Twilight Princess. Inside Zelda part 2 is written by art director Satoru Takizawa. Compares the feel of Twilight Princess to Ocarina of Time. Article on all the new Mario-themed games coming out (8 of them).

Other things of interest:

Shots of the English version of Trace Memory (Another Code)
Shots of Battalion Wars with some new art that is different (read: less ugly) than what was shown last year
Review and strategy section for Killer 7 (has that game released yet?)
Article on chip music including the sequencer in the Gameboy Camera - very interesting but too short (page and a half)

Killer7 is a june release. I am going to get that game.

btw. I heard that Another Code has a june release in Europe while it's a september release in the US.

Trace Memory is indeed listed as a September release in the mag. Killer 7 scored an 8.5. The reviewer seemed enthralled with the style of the game over everything else, but honestly who looks to NP for reviews? This issue brings a new review system (10 point scale and a single reviewer per game). New review "Krew" could use a little diversity.

The Gameboy Micro got a small sidebar, but nothing on the Revolution. Lots of focus on the DS naturally. My interest in the DS has been getting stronger and stronger with a better supply of games finally arriving.

Wha? They're back to a 10 scale (now they're like everyone else, including PLAY)?

I haven't resubscribed yet, but i've only miss a few issues.

It's too bad the rest of the entertainment world isn't as interested on the DS as the PSP. PC World just slapped-in another article about the Sony portable in its latest mag.

The cover is awsome, Killer 7 got an 8.5. Said it was a well exectued, rewarding non-traditional game.
Can NP be trusted with reviews? i know in the past they were pretty brutal on some games, which was refreshing. That score seems kinda high, though i'm still geting K7 on release.

NP is actually reviewing games now instead of just going "uh, it might have problems, but buy it anyway and they might fix them in the sequel! Five stars!" ? Cool

You mean they aren't just giving a short summary of the game, followed by 5 or 6 short sentences by the reviewers? Cool.

Hehe, there's more of this freebie 3 issue Nintendo Power magazine subscription than might meet the eye.

Before you say anything, think about it. July issue(which is really June)........August(July)........September(August). Doesnt Spaceworld usually take place in August? :D

Isn't there a contest to win LoZ: Twilight Princess before it comes out too? I think next issue has an e3 DVD which is an added bonus for free.

I wouldn't be suprised if they were using the NIntendo Power 3 free issues thing to get Revolution news out to everyone they can. Makes sense to me, sort of.

Only at the end of August.

You know what'd be awesome? An American Spaceworld. They could do two shows, one in Japan, and one here (or maybe two or three). Make it bigger than the Cube Clubs were in the US for a big unveiling and make sure people can get in for free. Maybe they could rent out a part of the LA Convention center so I can pretend it's E3 and play Zelda before it comes out. :(

No possible way NP is worse than GamePro. That's some terrible crap right there.
I don't know about their latest format, but the one they've been using for a while now was even worse than shitty old GamePro. Their reviews were seriously the worst pieces of shit that I have ever read in my entire life.

The last issue or two of Gamepro shockingly had features with word counts greater than 500! They even openly discussed emulation options!

I wonder if they're actually striving to become a "real" gaming magazine...

Nintendo Power's pretty dire, last time I checked... The switch to 3d, which took away the mag's ability to show those awesome maps, pretty much robbed NP of its main reason for being.

Also the fact that they were (last I checked) still putting crappy, small screenshots with their articles.

Oh God that part was awesome in the Zelda booth. That Stalfos in the back freaked me out as I was taking a picture by putting its sword through the bars and inches within my face. I think I still have the photo somewhere LD:D
