NIntendo: Profits up Ho's down

Yeah 330k GCNs in Japan doesn't make a lot of sense either.

They might not have shipped a lot, because there were a lot in stores already? I don't think GameCube sold more than 450k from april until december, right? And 100k consoles could have been in stores all over Japan already.

DS software sales cut from 15 million to 10 million. Sounds like a major title or two got pushed into next fiscal year.

Is there a probability that this major title have pokemon name in it ?

Not if you can make a larger profit by investing elsewhere.

Most of their profit right now is coming ironically from hardware though.

Their software sales last year were weak because they really didn't release anything that big (no new Pokemon title, no Mario Kart type GCN million seller, etc.).

next year financially is April to April, so just means Mario kart etc slated for release early on in the DS's life are now pushed out to after E3 sometime

Good news they still make billions in profits. The competition must be shitting itself.

Ea and Nintendo are both in the "projected" 500/600 M Euros of net profit for this year.

They laugh on everybody else.

This puts N5 backwards compatibility into doubt. Nintendo won't want the tie-ratio to suffer for Revolution like it has done for DS.

The operating income forecast for the entire year is now exactly the same for Nintendo and Sony at 110bn Yen.

$7.45bn in cash as of December 31st.

Not sure how you come to this conclusion? Software sales were up on last year (Y 184,011m vs Y 180,574m for the nine months) whereas hardware sales went down (Y 233,674m vs Y 257,067m for last years first nine months).

They're still making 600 mill in profit? Holy moly. They've got enough cash for a few more kicks at the can.

No need to speculate Xbox numbers... MS will release their earning statement after the bell closes tomorrow. For reference, as of June '04, Xbox lead worldwide was 200K. It will be interesting to see how much ground they have gained.

People still don't seem to get this- aside from EA, Nintendo sells more software than any other publisher. They make insane amounts of money each year.

I think the next person to suggest that "Nintendo is d000med" should get a ban :D

We can speculate their Xbox devision $ loss for the year.

They really should go 3rd party i mean seriously with only 600 million + in profit its not like they are making any money right guys?

haven't you heard. 600 million is pocket money.

I love it... because the thread title is negative a few folks came in to the thread with negative postings... apparently not reading the WHOLE article... which points out that Nintendo is quite healthy thankyaverymuch.... classic.

Can someone possibly explain the whole "strong yen" concept? I looked at a website that tracks exchange rates and saw that the Japanese yen (compared against the U.S. dollar) is currently at 104.16 after a low of 102.26 of Jan 12th. Why would this cause their profits to be lower than anticipated? Money is really confusing...I basically just know how to spend it.

They should have gained alot of ground with Halo 2's release. No brainer. The real question is how much ground are they going to lose this year? :lol

For one, there is no Xbox division. Two, MS will definitely see a profit in the H&E division for the 2nd quarter ending Dec. 31st which may be enough to give them a net profit for the fiscal year.

In other words, their American assets and net worth is cheaper than the Japanese side of things. You can go to America and get things cheaper than it would cost in Japan(in net worth). So you're losing money buying, having, and maintaining things in Japan as the yen gets higher and the dollar get lower. Understand?

Yep, hardware shortages + massive Halo 2 sales probably means MGS could've turned a profit even without help from Mac Office. :)

Microsoft hasn't really been calling it a "shortage" per se. The produced exactly as much as they intended to (if not a bit more), but with the actual PS2 shortage, many consumers turned to the Xbox which gave the platform even better than expected sales.

That's the way Microsoft has been portraying it, at least.

The person who posted the Sega logo is blowing it way out of proportion.

120 billion yen isn't that more than 1 billion dollars?

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't that like, their biggest profit ever?

Funny, but even funnier is that the expression is
"For all intents and purposes"

"Holy shit! Nintendo made $600,000,000,000 profit!"

Hehheh...you know what I meant.

This is what happens when I post before my second cup of coffee. You'll never see me post before my first cup of coffee because I practically fall out of bed with my face straight into the coffee maker.

Still funnier is that it has twice before been commented upon in this thread, and explained in replies. :)

Actually its closer to $700 million in profit, but who's keeping track?

I'd say that's a good year for Nintendo.

$500 million is generally what would be a "on par" type of year for Nintendo, $500-$700 million is a good year, $700 million-$1 billion+ would be considered great by Nintendo's standards.

I knew that strong yen would come back to bite them on the ass when they raised their forecast.
And the weak Cube sales, well, that's hardly surprising.

Shopper in December: I'd like to buy a new system with this fat Christmas bonus I picked up.

Retailer: We're out of PS2's, PSTwos, XBoxes, and DS's.

Shopper: Well, I already have a GBA:SP; I guess there's nothing to buy.

This is self-fulfilling prophecy at its ugliest. >:|

I guess we'd be able to pick up on Rhindle's bias or whatever that is that compelled this doomsday styled thread.

Logic > passion play

Lets see, EA planned to make what, 300 million dollars in profit? Nintendo gets double the profit of EA, they double their profit YOY, and they're still doomed. :lol

No. Asahi newspaper confirmed that it was Nintendogs that slipped. I guess they have high hopes for it, but now it will be released in April.

Not my title. You and Sporsk should head over and picket the Reuters offices, in the interest of truth and justice.

Yeah, my impression is that many posters here either just read the title or were eager to troll. Profits were down, meaning they still made money. And to the guy who made the ridiculous analogy with Sega's demise, Sega was in the red (meaning ZERO profits and losing plenty of money) for nearly six years before they went third party.

Rhindle's post was fair enough, so was the Reuters coverage. Most respondents have concentrated on the results for the nine-month period, that are favourable, but ignored the extrapolations of the results for the three months (October to December) which saw an intriguing decline in profitability compared to last year.

So let me get this straight:
1. Nintendo profits are UP on last year
2. Sony profits are DOWN on last year
and somehow this equates to bad news for Nintendo.

Groovy. Just checking.
