Nintendo recruiting for Project Smash Bros.

Shikamaru Ninja

任天堂 の 忍者
Nintendo is forming a new studio entirely for the development of Smash Bros Revolution. Satoru Iwata and Shigeru Miyamoto have decided on the arrangement of the development team. Satoru Iwata recruited former Nintendo/HAL director Masahiro Sakurai to join Nintendo temporarily for this project as head director. Miyamoto then decided to approach a "familiar" (Genus Sonority?, Skip?, Alpha Dream? Camelot? Ganbarion?) development team with the ideas Sakurai had for Smash Bros. The development team decided to join the Smash Bros team. Nintendo then found a new office for this initial core team to begin development. Nintendo is now hiring new employees for the new Super Smash Bros game. The main positions looking to be filled are:

Game Programmer
3D Character Designer/Modeler
3D Character Animation
3D Map Designer

Nintendo is only contracting these employees for the game. The employment may be terminated after the development is completed. Masahiro Sakurai is also expected to return to his small independent game company after the game is completed. This new Nintendo studio may dissolve entirely after Smash Brothers finishes development. Then again, there is a chance it may exist as a different entity.

since sakurai was approached at e3 05, and nintendo is recruting additional staff for the game, i wonder if online smash bros will make revolution's launch?

I wonder if Revolution wil launch worldwide in 2006.
US : Winter 2006
JP : Winter 2006
EU : Spring 2007
Seems more likely.

I was reading some crap before of how excitebike guy and balloon fighter were supposed to be in Smash Bros cube but they were scratched in favor or Ice Climbers.

Balloon Fighter, Excitebike Guy, Pit, Little Mac, Captain Olimar, Andy, Ike, Wario in next Smash???

Andy or Sami from Advance Wars. Paper Mario could be cool too but that would be too many Marios.

I'm kind of hoping for Tom Nook, though I don't really know what he could do as such. But then, I didn't know what Captain Falcon would do either.

Captain Falcon's a more obvious action character than Tom Nook, though. Mind you, if they could make Mr Game and Watch a character...

it depends on how strong a launch line-up nintendo feels it already has for revolution. they might want to launch with new franchises and a new mario game (and maybe zelda tp for the hardcore).

i hope smash bros has loads of characters, like 50+, covering nintendo's gaming history. i'd love to see pikmin included.

where can I read about that too?

I think Pikmin should either be Olimar's weapon or items like the pokemon were. Each Pikmin provides a different attack style as we know.

Yes would that not be a killer 2006 line up for Nintendo?

Summer 2006 - Zelda TP - Bye Bye Gamecube, Hello Rev. The game is for Cube but has unlockable exclusive Rev controlling options.

Autumn 2006 - Revolution Launches with brand new Mario title.

Christmas 2006 - Smash Bros Online.

Of course we would have various other titles thrown in such as the new IP, and the Ubisoft FPS.

I thought HAL's been working on this for a long time, that's why they were so quiet (their only other recent project being a 2.5D GCN Kirby sidescroller we've heard extremely little about). Maybe they're a bit behind and just need more raw manpower, or maybe they need to rework some things to make accomidations for Rev's capabilities or new gameplay designs thanks to the Revmote... but I can't believe they're just getting started on the game.

Me too (or TotaKeke). I think the axe, fishing pole, bug net, and shovel could constitute enough moves, perhaps with some bizarre specials involving money or furniture. He certainly seems more adaptable than ExciteBike guy, and judging by the popularity of ACDS in Japan, I don't see how they could overlook him as playable

yeah, i expected work on smash bros to be well under way. n-sider has an article on hal labs where they say there's ~100 people, so that should be 2-3 teams, maybe more depending on the size of the game and platform.

afaik they are developing pokemon ranger, but that can't be a huge team.

maybe hal's working on something new for revolution?

There should be a large core team working on Smash Bros. While Sakurai joined after E3 2006, the game already has a development team and a couple of core directors that will work alongside Sakurai.

The fact that Nintendo needs more people is a sign that this game may be that much bigger than Melee.

:lol :lol :lol :lol :lol

That would be the only damn character I ever play -

would be cool if you could be a randomly selected Animal Crossing "player" person.

Olimar needs to make it to the next game too, for sure --- droves of pikmin all over the enemies face ------- Olimar arena level could be really pretty too.

Ike is cool and all, but please put a female Fire Emblem character in Smash Brothers, Nintendo! Sheeda or Liliena would do.

The launch is really only 8-9 months away if they're planning to go in Japan for September and then North American in October/November.

That's not a whole lot of time.

I think Smash Bros. will be a pretty fast dev cycle though ... they'll likely take the GCN engine, soup the graphics up, add a lot of new characters, some new modes, some wand style special attacks (ie: pointing to the screen to grab items to drop on your opponenets head for instance).

Then there's online play of course.

Let's make it Tag Team and have special smash attacks when you use certain combos of characters, i e mario/luigi and wario/waliugi.

hey, it worked in double dash, hahaha

or did it

I'd guess this game would be a November/December launch, even if the revolution arrives a few months prior. Wasn't Melee released a few months past launch as well? If the system is not coming out within the holiday period, they will need a big holiday period game to drum up sales.

I hope they include more fighting styles in the game. I hate how some of the characters had basically the same exact moves, but were a little slower, or more powerful.

I want more deversity.

I don't really care what characters they add. I just want them to fix the ridiculous jumping that was in the last game :(

Sonic is going to be in this game. Mark my words.

Go on, mark them.

That would be a terrible idea. If they want to include 3rd party characters, they might as well get in touch with Capcom, Namco, Konami, etc. to include a flagship character from them as well.

ew. i dont want sonic in this game. (i dont think they will either.)

also no gimmick with the rev controller please, just have it control like the gcn version

Why is that a terrible idea? The fans would love to see that.

And yeah sure, get Capcom (Megaman?), Namco (Pac-Man?), Konami (?) to include a character too.

As for Square-Enix ... I swear if it hasn't dawned on Nintendo-Square-Enix to make a all-star RPG with characters from both companies ... I just dunno what to say. Such a game would sell 1-2 million in Japan alone.

Those were just the 6 clone characters, who would have been nixed from the game before they recieved individual move sets. The game had pleanty of all new characters aside from them (like 8 or 10 I think). I'm sure they will be adding more characters with new move sets to this game as well, but I hope they run with the clone idea and add a few more (Paper Mario, Daisy, ZeroMission finale Samus) for extra diversity. The only awkward clone was the GanonDorf/Falcon clone. Ganondorf/Falcon should be replaced with Samurai Goroh and Ganondorf should be remade with his own move set.

Nintendo's obviously got a lot of their franchises and most popular games covered, but there are a few big games not in there at the moment:

Wario
Advance Wars
Nintendogs
Brain Training
Hamtaro
Golden Sun
Animal Crossing
Pikmin
Custom Robo
1080
Wave Race
Magical Vacation
Starfi

Now as Hamtaro and Brain Training are licensed, I doubt they'd include them. I think Golden Sun is Nintendo's property and not Camelot's though I'm honestly not sure. I hope to god they don't include anything from Wave Race, 1080 or Nintendogs as they're too close to realism to fit a game like Smash Bros to my mind (though I'm sure many of you would love the chance to beat the crap out of the puppies).

So, if Nintendo are thinking along the same lines as me, that kind of leaves:

Wario
Advance Wars
Golden Sun (maybe)
Animal Crossing
Pikmin
Custom Robo
Magical Vacation
Starfi

Nintendo added 7 characters to the original line up last time (and 6 clones), so if we assume Nintendo are going to do the same again, it seems fine as you just remove a game like Golden Sun or Magical Vacation and there's your 7.

Problem with that is, last time they pulled 2 of the characters from old games, 4 of them from games already represented and only 1 from a recent, unrepresented game (Marth).

My guess however (based on 7 new characters alone) would be:

Captain Olimar
Pit
Balloon Kid (or some other old character)
Wario
Andy
Someone from Custom Robo/Tom Nook
Sonic

I could be completely wrong, maybe they'll want another Pokemon, though I hope not as we already have 4 and the pokeballs. I'm not overly happy about Sonic, I'd prefer just Nintendo characters, but I guess if it's just Sonic (please, no Pac-Man) I can put up with it. Seems lots of people are desperate for his inclusion, and I guess Sonic vs Mario fights would be cool. They might even go for a character from a new IP, assuming there's someone recognisable enough in those games (ie. not something like Nintendogs). They didn't last time though.

It'd be nice if they differentiated the clones more, but I don't mind if they don't. I realise it's not like we'd get an entirely new character for each clone if they didn't exist, they're obviously not as time consuming to create and balance. I do hope they seperate Mario and Luigi more though, he needs his vacuum.

Sorry, but the GCN controls for SSB:M were gimmicky. Cstick anyone?

C-stick is for ease of use. Everybody can use it.
DUAL ANALOG IN HALO IS GIMMICKY BECAUSE IT IS EASIER TO USE THAN A DPAD AND C-BUTTONS!

What didn't you like about it? I've heard various complaints about Melee, mainly from Kirby fans, but never that one before.

I think Drinky Crow should be in the game actually.

He ends up eating crow on the Nintendogs level as sales of the game go higher and higher in the background. :lol

Everyone knows that the unspoken rule is that if you are playing SSB:M with someone and they use the C-Stick, and they are over eight years old, you punch them repeatedly until they stop.

Don't we all?
Give me some combination of Andy, Sami, Lyn, Hector (no Eliwood since we've got Roy), Wario, Waluigi, Metaknight, King Dedede, Samurai Goroh, Blood Falcon, Black Shadow, Deathborn, Pit, the Hammer Brothers (another Ice Climbers two-in-one type), Daisy, Marin, Malon, Romani, Olimar, Tom Nook, Munchlax, Rukario, suitless Samus, anything at all from Custom Robo, Paula, Jeff, Poo, Starman (from Earthbound), King K. Rool, Wolf (from Star Wolf)...

No, it was two weeks or so IIRC. I remember it because I bought a GC at launch date only in preparation for SSBM; none of the launch titles interested me enough to bother, so I literally sat there holding the GC controller, watching the computer play SSB, and trying to imagine what it would be like.
But yeah, I'm a hardcore SSB fanboy. >_>

Well, if you were playing 3-player, 4-player, or with items on the highest setting, yeah, I can see what you mean. But really, 1-on-1 with items on the medium setting or lower, it's fine for the most part.

-Dr. Mario's in my top five while Mario's nowhere close, just because the vitamins are so much stronger than the fireballs and because Mario's forward+A in the air knocks the enemy downward instead of upward.
-Likewise, I can play as Falco, but not so well as Fox, because my game revolves so much around aerial battle that I need the height of his jumps.
-And Captain Falcon/Ganondorf--while that's a pretty awkward pairing, Ganondorf's neutral A jab is probably the best in the game while Falcon's leaves you extremely open. But Falcon has the electric aerial knee, better recovery, and a tilt up+A that's actually extraordinarily good as opposed to completely unusable. Like Pkunkfury said, Ganondorf should have his own unique moveset, but I do want someone like Samurai Goroh or Blood Falcon to inherit his current style.
-I'm not even going there with Marth/Roy. I'll leave that to Smashboards or something.
-Pichu/Pikachu, though, yeah, that was just stupid.

Don't get me wrong, I agree they need more fighting styles; I just don't necessarily see the problem with also having some "clones." Slight tweaks really do change things up.

Mama Smurf said:

I agree he needs his vacuum (and Mario might be able to use FLUDD somehow), but how much more can they separate them? They have completely different moves for dash+A, forward+B, smash forward+A, up+B, aerial forward+A, and aerial down+A, and even tilt forward+A is differentiated because Luigi has much longer legs and better reach.
They should share at least some moves (aerial up+A, smash down+A) and some similar moves in slightly different styles (fireball, tornado spin); I don't see how much more they can be split without detracting from their brotherhood ties.

They need:

rob-robot.jpg

and

duckhunt.jpg

Umm, using the c-stick for aerial moves is essential sometimes.
