Nintendo responds to why regular "New" 3DS is skipping North America

Yeah, pretty obvious we'd get a response like this. Whatever, the New 3DS has nice features, but I won't get one until they bring the regular New 3DS here.

Ok, so we know NoA is completely responsible then.
People were quick to blame NoJ. NoA is ran by complete dummies.
Really? I had only seen people blaming NoA

its a tough sale... but why not offer it as a limited item on store.nintendo.com or something?

It won't do well in retail, but I'm sure there is enough of an audience that justify selling a certain amount of them.

Nintendo rarely takes advantage of their own online store for anything. Quite a shame.

I absolutely despise these canned non-answer statements. If they simply said they didn't think it would sell enough to justify mass release, fine. People may disagree, but its an honest answer. But answers like this are insulting. Either refuse to answer directly, or don't speak at all.

Isn't that what they meant when they said the 3DS XL is the best choice for this particular market? Did you need an accompanying pie chart?

Didn't the smaller model sell below expectations in Japan? And in general XL sells more here. So they probably thought it wasn't worth it.

Doesn't really matter who made the decision. All that matters is how you react to it. I don't want the XL version, so I won't buy it. It's as simple as that. If they never release the smaller version, it's their fucking loss.

That is a comically shitty response.

Why not give a straight answer rather than trying to use marketing guff that makes no sense?

I can see how not having choices is a bad thing.

Why exactly do so many people want the smaller model? I thought the New XL was the better version of the console.
Some people want face plates, and on a more superficial level full color buttons. Also there is an appeal to smaller devices, it's why you seem more likely to see the Xperia Z3 Compact on best phone lists rather than the Xperia Z3 because the Compact fills an underserved niche very well (smaller high end Android phones.) Even at a gig less of RAM.

Why don't they just be smart and give it up with the region shit? HQ it in Japan and cut loose these morons bumbling around in the NOA offices.

NoA is fucking clueless. Not everyone here wants the XL.

Nintendo of America continues to show complete ignorance towards the desires of its consumers. Awesome.

Or, maybe they know the market better than vocal posters on a forum? They know what will sell best for their handheld. They probably have years of dsi xl, 3ds xl sales data to tell them which way to go.

Anecdotally, everyone I know who owns a 3DS still or people I've seen play out and about was an XL. Maybe they felt that the cost to sell the normal version here wouldn't be as profitable as they needed.

I don't care what anyone says. Nintendo of America is the best!

....j/k.

Must have figured it's hard enough getting shelf space as it is.

"American wow, penis so big, so big penis!"

They don't think we need the regular size 3DS in NA because we are packing. At least that's what chinpokomon taught me growing up. This decision must be retaliation.

NoA taking region locks to new heights..

I feel for you, NA gaf.

Translation 1: We didnt sell out of the old 3DS yet.

Translation 2: We want to keep selling the old 3DS and our retail partners dont want that many different SKUs on the shelf.

I'm pretty sure NoA will phase out 2DS as New 3DS exclsuive software starts pouring in. Clear blue/red and sea Green 2DS systems seem already to be OOP.

After that only "choice" people will have is red or black. Not even blue. Red or Black. That's it.

Not to mention the sharper graphics. The main reason why I want the smaller 3ds. I went from the 3ds to the XL and I've always hated how blurry/dull the screen is in comparison. Also I commute more now so I want the smaller form factor.

I would agree years ago if warehouse business did not exist. Now shelf space really means little now that online has boomed like it has. They could have easily afford to make regular 3DS Amazon exclusive.

Yeah, this is what happened with the Wii U as well. The white models just went away.

Isn't the XL better though? I'd have been pissed if the normal sized one was the only one coming to the USA.

Choice is not always good for consumers, sometimes, Reggie just needs to make that choice for our own good.

Trust him, he knows best :)

They can spout whatever nonsense they like (and it's clearly simpleton excuse-making coming out of their mouths) - they lose a sale from me if they don't bring the PORTABLE n3DS to NA. I have a 3DSXL I haven't used more than ten minutes since picking up my 2DS already...

edit: I just went to the Nintendo.com 3DS site and the only 3DS systems there are the 3DSXL and the 2DS - there's some cursory mention of the n3DS XL in the carousel, but there's no mention at all of the regular version 3DS that I can find...

It might actually be a supply decision and they could be saving face*. Wait until holiday 2015 before jumping to conclusions.

Or they have data that suggest there are people out there who would buy the NXL, frustrated that the N3D isn't out, then buy the N3D on top of that if it were released later, but that there are less people like that who would go the other way.

I don't know how much you know about Japanese culture (I'm an expert)

Is that spoiler text supposed to be sarcastic? Besides, it's NoA's fault, as usual.

Posted this in another topic:
I wonder if they're holding off on the regular N3DS because there's so much leftover stock of the older models that they want to clear those out first, and the best way (in Nintendo's minds) to do that is sell this premium version to make those oldies look like better deals. Then later this year, they'll unleash the cheaper N3DS with a Pokemon game for all the hypes.

Obviously, last part is wishful thinking. But there's way too many 3DS models in a market that's not handheld friendly anymore.

Truth is we don't really know who made the decision, or who supports it, or whatever. Did we think that the statement would be "yup, HQ in Japan said no to NA getting it?"

I think they goofed. Don't really care if it was Reggie or Iwata, honestly.

I was definitely getting a n3DS on day one if they sold the small version. If all they ever offer us are XLs, I'll sit this one out.

But I think they'll change course on this.

I like my gaming being as portable as possible. If they released a 3DS in a watch I'd be all over that.
And then have buyers remorse because how the fuck do you press those buttons?!

The first one sounds like we* should be grateful that we at least got the New XL.
Rather have the XL, why would someone want the smaller one outside of the button colors?
Higher DPI screen, smaller form factor, less weight, the nice customisation options offered by the face plates.

(EDIT) *And by "we" I mean you Americans, I'm in Europe. WHOOP WHOOP!

Unless they have market data to suggest that sales they'd get just from Amazon don't justify the expense and effort of prepping the thing for production, localization, and distribution here when those $$$ and efforts could be used elsewhere for things that won't be Amazon exclusives.

I can see this happening. Like the XL's are not going to be shipped into retail stores as far as we know. This could just be a soft launch and an actual launch is going to happen once they clear out old inventory. However, I doubt it since they promoted 2DS in this direct. Probably we are never getting the regular new 3DS.

I still think they have data that shows how the systems are selling and who they're likely selling to. The XL option might simply make the most sense, maybe at this time, to sell at this time to them. Worrying about the face plates and getting them into stores might be an added cost they don't feel they need to deal with.

Guys look on the bright side, we don't have to choose between them now!!!!
:DD
But seriously this makes sense for the US market imo, everyone I see pretty much has the XL model and likes it. I'm pretty sure all they had to do was check sales figures and realized US market was buying much more of the XL.

Portability? Better resolution? Better ergonomics?

Reason XL sold great was the OG 3DS was the ugliest piece of hardware Nintendo ever created. They have migrated and never looked back. If Nintendo had released something like New 3DS instead of OG 3DS, XL wouldn't be so successful like that.

I see.

Thanks for the explanation.
