Nintendo of America President responds to Mario Kart World $80 price: “What you see right there is variable pricing”

I have no problem with the prices, as they are still very good value for money for entertainment.

Going to the cinema will cost me only £5, but such cinemas are very rare, most cost £15-£20. All for at most three hours.

A book is £5-10 for maybe 10 hours.

Streaming is much better value for moeny, but to watch all that I want legally is about £30 a month if several exclusives are on. It's around £10 at minimum.

To those saying they'll buy fewer games: try being more judicious.

I don't really understand this line of justification.

Should things cost more based on the amount of time they provide entertainment?

I actually agree. Games of exceptoinally high quality, that were expensive to make, have infinite replay value, deserve a higher price. The question is: Is it worth it? Thats up to gamers to decide. You see the same shit every year with COD. "Its more of the same", yet they buy it anyway. You have nobody to blame but yourself.
If Mario Kart really is too expensive, then people won't buy it, and they'll start to discount it. Thats just supply and demand.

TV's provide tens of thousands of hours of entertainment

So a basic 1080p TV around 48" should cost $10,000 I reckon. Since that how we are doing this game

You do realise the standalone Mario Kart World price is designed to convince everyone to buy the Switch 2 MKW bundle, right?

I think it's highly likely that bigger games on the Switch 2 will be $80 (physical).

Like I said, there's always room for sales on the eShop.

variable pricing is sleezy

at least try to be a bit cool about it--you know, take me out to dinner first
include a big color poster or something
blah blah certain titles include pack-ins blah blah

I talked to my 14 year old niece who is into Nintendo and asked her what she thought about $80 games. She didn't give a single fuck, she was day one on everything Nintendo. I guess it really only matters for those of us who are financially strict about stuff like this.
I mean obviously kids want it all. But some parents (who buy those) won't be able to please theirs kids with those insane pricing. Particularly not in the currently milked countries : Europe. Even Sony had to price cut their PS5s there recently. Europeans can't pay anymore to subsidize Japan and US prices.

I guess it depends on the family.

As a kid, I got two games a year - one for my birthday, one for Christmas. That's how it was till I got a job. In that case, I don't think these increases would have made a difference.

This adds up far more for enthusiasts that buy lots of games imo. Typically those people have more disposable though.
