Nintendo Switch 2 - DF Hardware Review - A Satisfying Upgrade... But Display Issues Are Problematic

Anyone making an objective assessment of Switch 2 lackluster HW...

THE Cult reaction:

As a new switch 2 owner (last Nintendo console was the Wii which I had for a whole week) I agree, there's absolutely no discussion nor criticism to be had with some people.

I'm liking the console well enough but I had zero expectations going in hence why I'm not (that) dissapointed.

How come they didnt use an oled, seems like a step backwards....
It almost feels like it's the inevitable updated model with better battery time and OLED that will be the "real" Switch 2. I think Nintendo was really lazy/cheap going backwards like this.

Bojji Bojji became SonyGAF the day he got a PS5 Pro.

I thought we were ride or die no mid-gen :(

I need this pro for DS2! Buying pro also saved me money on ophthalmologist, to cure eye cancer from low resolution base PS5 games.

Enabling always-on-HDR in the system settings for older games for external displays looks really interesting!

It's not auro hdr so it's just SDR in HDR container similar to PS5. It can fuck up image quality in some games (wrong gamma etc.) I wouldn't recommend using it.

I've found myself using this more in docked mode since it supports higher resolutions than the previous console and think the games look great. The handheld screen should have been OLED though, I've no idea (outside of selling a future model) why they would have regressed there.

I would remove 2 points of NS2 because the LCD in fucking 2025 and those stupid Virtual Game Cards, so 8/10.

Nintendo know they will release in future a OLED model, but for now the cheap they can make.
Eh I don't know if 1080p HDR 120hz VRR oled screens are a thing, or at least cheap ones

I have a 4K OLED HDR 120hz screen on my phone but it's not VRR, and it costed 1100€

IDK if Nintendo really want to push VRR so much.

Still very confusing what they intend to do, but I quite sure they do want an OLED model if they want to release a premium product.

I would get a regular NS2 anw because I want my to stay 100% dock, but if I would prefer a portable sure I would pick an OLED screen without VRR.

I mean, just try to play games outside. The answer is clear as day.

Doesn't have to be OLED, apparently that has issues with power draw and VRR anyway. But we have plenty examples of much better LCD panels.

i honestly did (I only play SW2 in portable mode) and the sceeen looks fantastic, I used to love the screen of my Portal but now seems meh compared to it.

I am not a huge « everything which is not an oled is shit » type of guy. OLED is nice, but it doesn't mean everything which isn't oled is awful, the screen of my Macbook Air M2 is one of the best screens I ever saw in my life and it's not OLED

OLEDs with VRR support are rare and expensive, and the solutions to get VRR all draw more power. It's that simple.

Nintendo knows what they are doing ... they needed to gimp the switch 2 screen to make it easier for people to be tempted to buy the OLED model when it releases in a couple years.

Maybe Nintendo made an engineering and cost decision to go with an LCD screen cause going with an OLED screen with a 120hz refresh rate would raise the sales price too much, no? Jeez

Switch

Burn-in.

You have seen how long it takes to burn in a Switch OLED on the most extreme testing conditions have you not?

It's not possible to burn it in under regular use. Literally. Not. Possible. You'll probably die or the Switch will simply stop functioning before it burns in.

If you're someone that only looks at 'specs on the box' and doesn't understand anything about displays then you might be impressed.
That mostly me, I'm no tech geek so I have zero clue all that technical part of it and so far I haven't experienced any "ghosting" that people keep mentioning.

Maybe for people who in tech will notice these issues more than your average person.

I wish I was you. I have no idea how someone can't notice a trail behind everything when the screen moves. Look at a bright object like a star on the Switch 2 and move the camera and it will turn into a comet. You don't have to be technically minded to see it. However, it might be the case that some people literally can't see it. When you look at the lights on a car at night and squint, the average person will observe it looking a bit like a star, however some people can't see it due to the shape of your eye.

basically not knowing anything about the tech makes it seem like magic, and is arguably more enjoyable than knowing all about it

once you start learning about the tech and find it interesting... it never ends

John has got a point about the overdrive, it could very well be that Nintendo is not doing that. Could be an oversight, which you'd expect to not happen but consoles have had plenty of oopsies like that in the past.

If it's not the overdrive, then Nintendo went out of their way to get a screen with response time that bad.

Played it for about 100 hours total now, no issues at all with the screen, it's big and gorgeous with great colors and also very bright.

The average consumer doesn't care.

Looks pretty good on my OLED TV in docked mode.

What, you think everyone is playing handheld mode?

A PS3 from 2006 will still look good on OLED TV, I don't get your point?

Also are you implying that no one uses the handheld mode? What is the point then of the device 😆

One thing for sure is that its not an oversight. They will have done focus groups and testing. Just look at all the events leading up to the launch and almost nobody mentioned the poor motion. I noticed it in seconds and for somebody who can see it, it would take brain damage not to. However, obviously many can't see it. Its like those who claim they can't see above 30.

If the average consumer didn't care then why produce a OLED upgrade to the original Switch? Oh that's right, because it's obviously better.

I'd bet the majority of those stating it's fine and great would upgrade to a OLED model if Nintendo releases one. Because it would clearly be better.

I can't speak for others but I never got original Switch OLED for me it was not worth the money and I was already happy with my launch Switch.

They did it to make money from those that do care because everyone else already bought a switch. It's a money making tactic.

I mean, pretty obvious.
