Nintendo Switch Presentation - January 12th

Well the rumor was that Nintendo of Europe asked Criterion to pitch an F-Zero prototype to present to Shigeru Miyamoto back in 2011. So it was far from ever being an actual game.

Back to the initial point was Nintendo tried to get a third party developer to make a game and they turned it down.

If Nintendo wants to support themselves better then invest more money into expanding your own first party western studios.

How did you all watch the Nintendo Switch reveal in October? Where I was, it was due to start at 3pm but I ended up watching it at around 3.05pm with a YouTube link I found. But I was scrambling around Nintendo's own site (which had nothing), NeoGAF (which went down) and YouTube (never knew it was called "Switch" to search for it). I think I found the link through Twitter.

Nintendo aren't so hot with this. Not like Apple who set up a dedicated page on their site to view their keynotes, and you can only watch it there. I know the Apple stuff is live compared to Nintendo's stuff being pre-recorded.
Searched "Nintendo" at YouTube a few minutes after it was scheduled planning to go to NOA's page, but Switch was already the #2 result I think.

Totally pulling this out of my ass

Well, Laura Dale's adjusted BG&E2 exclusivity rumour did say that a new teaser would be shown alongside the Switch reveal, which some have since taken to mean a proper presentation rather than the reveal itself, so this make or break on that front... unless she tweaks the rumour a third time.

Nah. Donkey Kong Country 2 Returns: Diddy's New Kong-Quest.

I think you're joking around but FYI apparently someone inside Retro said they weren't
doing anything Donkey Kong related right now.

I'd like an original i.p. or Metroid, especially since the Wii U never got a proper Metroid
game.

I don't think Nintendo would greenlight another title in the Metroid series after the catastrophic commercial and critical failure of Metroid Prime: Federation Force. There clearly isn't any interest left in the series at this point, this has been made very clear.

I don't think the fate of the Metroid-franchise hinges on the failure of Federation Force. It's very clear that this game is used as filler for the 3DS line-up. Nothing more, nothing less.

There clearly isn't any interest in bad spinoffs literally nobody wanted.

I know Metroid isn't a AAA seller but if they, you know, actually made a good game for once and marketed it well, it could sell at least a million. Every Metroid game has sold that, with the exception of Zero Mission, Other M, and Federation Force, the latter two speaking for themselves.

No, it hasn't been made clear at all, really.

Animal Crossing: Amiibo Festival likely under-performed. Guess no one care about the AC franchise anymore.

You're only saying that because you're OCD about people wrongly calling the original "Diddy Kong's Quest"...

And it's infuriating, I agree.

Hehehe actually I just want more David Wise DKC music. I can't get enough of that shit! Though I guess it'd be interesting to see what David Wise would do with a Metroid Prime game? Would they even let him?

he's right you know :D :D :D

The problem withe Metroid right now is that fans don't have any faith in Nintendo in regards to the series anymore. Even a new Metroid game as good or better than Super Metroid would have a hard time to gain traction.

I really hope Star Fox gets a new game. SF0 wasn't fair to the franchise. Miyamoto doomed it right from the beginning.

Now there are no gimmicks with this system. Just a straight up controller like the old days. Let Star Fox get a new game with great visuals and a great online and Star Fox will do pretty good.

What the fuck could Nintendo be hiding?

They have repeatedly made it crystal clear that besides the Nintendo Switch being a hybrid gaming system, there is also something else about the hardware that makes it unique.

Furthermore, this hardware secret seems to be so pivotal that they refuse to discuss it whatsoever until January (approximately 2 months before the NS's launch).

What could it be and why are they keeping it a secret? Are they possibly concerned that even though they don't have to be concerned about Sony copying the idea (as PS4 Pro is now released), that Microsoft may try and steal the idea and implement it into Scorpio?

The good will tour, Nintendo edition:

Metroid: Let an indie/small internal team make a 2D Metroid.

F-Zero: Lend to a third party ala Hyrule Warriors.

Star Fox: This one is tough since they just released a moderately high budget Star Fox game just this year, and it bombed spectacularly. Give Star Fox some time, then try again. No terrible control gimmicks this time.

I'm guessing it's the motion control, advanced haptics, and modularity/customizability of the Switch.

They're gonna present it like, "this one package does ALL of this??? Wow! For only $199???" I don't think there's a single "brand new concept" this time, just a combination of features that people want.

Give it to the guys who did AM2R. Also, turn AM2R into a Switch game as well.

A million for a AAA Metroid is like a Nintendo charity at this point. Fans should really buy the hell out of Metroid if they attempt another ambitious route for the series. The Prime series, for all its accolades and critical acclaim, seem to have mediocre sales that they no longer attempt something as ambitious after those.

Animal Crossing: Amiibo Festival likely under-performed. Guess no one care about the AC franchise anymore.

After the failure of Mario is Missing, I think it's clear there isn't any interest left in the Super Mario series.

While I don't agree with the idea of the post you quoted, your examples do not really compare. AC and Super Mario are big franchises that can sell millions when main games get released. A dud or two won't really hurt the franchise. Metroid franchise is small compared to those 2 giants.

After the failure of Mario is Missing, I think it's clear there isn't any interest left in the Super Mario series.

Except Mario is Missing was not a failure at all:

In an August 1993 press release, Software Toolworks claimed that sales of the console versions of Mario is Missing! exceeded $7,000,000 for the fiscal quarter and that the game boosted the company's revenue during a slow quarter.

Try harder next time!

My heart wants it to be some crazy new feature or something online related or something SCD and upgradeable docks related.

My mind tells me it's what we already know through the rumors being IR, different joy-con schemes.

They aren't hiding anything. That was just a clever spin to the question. The fact that he had to mention the software line up suggests this.

Unless.. You know... The dock... you know...

Sure, they're not directly comparable, but it's still a perfectly valid point. Claiming Federation Force proves the Metroid franchise no longer garners any interest is nonsense.

yeah, there's no other secret. at one point nintendo actually hyped up the gamecube controller as not having all of it's features disclosed only to show the final version featuring the Z button lol.

I could see a more modern RARE producing smaller titles like DKCTF, Captain Toad, and Kirby and the rainbow curse. Those mid-tier titles that were still quality enough to warrant a boxed release but could likely be made by a smaller team and/or in a short period of time.
RETRO needs to be completely reworked. Armature took away a lot of talent (but not enough) and seemingly trust with them taking 3 years to make a samey DKCR sequel that barely sold over a million units.
Either that or they need to open up more studios.
If they really have just one console to support, I'd imagine that means increased profitability from not having to split the fanbase. More software on a regular basis seems more doable now and It's probably recommend if they can't get enough 3rd party support.

Retro is not hurting for talent. What makes Retro Studios so good at what they do is partially that they are heavily overseen by NCL. Nintendo will make sure Retro has everything they need to do... whatever it is that they are doing. And Nintendo will also make sure that Retro's next game is up to par with everything else they've put out.

I know I'm in the minority in here, but I think they will release star Fox Zero Switch with fixed controls and also add multiplayer, which is desperately needed. I'm shouted down everytime. But I think it is a no brained. Wii U was not a good test market to see if the franchise is dead.

Sure, they're not directly comparable, but it's still a valid analogy. Claiming Federation Force proves the Metroid franchise is no longer beloved is nonsense.

Metroid franchise is a beloved franchise, but it's not big. That is its real problem. Any dud in the franchise hurts it more because its chances of getting games again, or at least getting another big game again, are getting smaller when there is little market reception to the franchise. Those cannot be said of Animal Crossing or Super Mario.

Metroid as a franchise really needs that "Fire Emblem Awakening" kick that will attract more than just the hardcore fans.
I don't mean waifus, btw.

Clearly it is a Star Tropics reboot.

Ugh ever since the Wii U was announced this has been my dream game announcement. I even went so far as to try prototyping a modern StarTropics game several years ago (in Unity? Don't even remember).

It would be a perfect modern third person adventure game. Perfect setting to show off gorgeous HD visuals, using the yo-yo like a grappling hook/whip is the perfect charming Nintendo light heartedness, getting a variety of subweapons/tools adds a bit of Zelda to the mix, while retaining the exploration and platforming nature of the original...

I'm just sad that this is never gonna happen.

Don't get me wrong, I don't believe for a second another Metroid is a sure thing, at least anytime soon.

My point was in response to the notion that Federation Force (like Amiibo Festival) being poorly received means there's no more interest in the IP or that the series is forever dead.

If there's any game that needs a desperate port to fix its problems and make additions it's Star Fox Zero. I hope Miyamoto does it. I would love it TBH.

Just not having the second screen and motion controls is a big improvement alone.

Didn't Miyamoto mention something about online before Star Fox Zero was releasing?

What the fuck could Nintendo be hiding?

My guess is that it's more powerful than what people are thinking, it will
finally feature a universal Nintendo account, can play New 3DS and standard
3DS games and will be one of the first Nintendo systems ever marketed
towards a more "adult" type crowd.

These investors always read like your average forum-goer, except more polite. They're such an embarrassment.
It's unrealistic to expect every new system to reinvent the wheel. Consoles like the Wii are a perfect storm of a specific technology becoming affordable enough for a mass market product, allowing for a new type of interface AND being well-suited to attract a new audience. Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft can't will revolutionary mass market technology into existence.
And the guy has got to know Kimishima can't go into any specifics until Jan 12th.

What a pointless question.

Honestly, I never really liked the idea of "Super Smash Kart". I'm fine with a few cameo appearances like R.O.B, Link, and the Animal Crossing characters, but other than that, just let Mario Kart be Mario Kart and keep the company wide crossover stuff to Smash Bros.

Feels like it's the right direction to go after MK8-Switch to help differentiate what will then be the two Mario Kart games on the system.

I'll certainly take something like that over continually adding characters like "Pink Gold Peach"

I've been thinking quite a bit about how they're going to transition this presentation to NOE and NOA audiences in a meaningful timeframe. They have talked as if NOA and NOE will have separate events, but that doesn't make much sense unless all of the events are happening pretty much in tandem (all the meaningful first party titles will be shown in Japan first and suck a lot of the excitement from the other events)

So it would make sense to me if they were to either run a Direct or live translation of the Switch Presentation as it happened, and then do Treehouse Live from the convention centre directly after it?
