Nintendo takes down ROM sites Nsw2u and Nswdl

good look taking down my 5TB HDD

That HDD will probably take down itself sooner or later.

Hope you have those 5TB backed up at least once.

I see smug comments here and elsewhere about pirating Switch games on their PC handheld or waiting for Yuzu 2 to play Switch 2 games in 8k 240fps.

It's always because Nintendo deserves it for making weak hardware or because they're "anti-consumer" or some other random thing they feel like using for rationalizing it while they download the latest third party and indie games for free.

NSW2U goes down so now they need to pretend that they're concerned about preservation until they find another source and go back to being smug.
People will always find an excuse to pirate.

I will admit that if a game is no longer in circulation, I may download a ROM to play on my handheld. However, a lot of older games are still purchasable like Legend of Dragoon on PS4/PS5.

The Switch and its games are all still in circulation.

The fun aspect is that people that most hate Nintendo are the same people you see in these kind of threads always… I don't get how you hate a company so much an at the same time are so worried about old Nintendo games preservation at the same time.

That's just it, they're not worried about game preservation if they're upset about not being able to download TOTK, a game they can easily walk into a store and purchase a physical version.

I like their old games. I don't like how they operate as a company nowadays. Doesn't seem that complicated or hard to understand.

On one hand, I think disavowing Nintendo for taking down rom sites is kind of silly. Intellectual property and what not. The Internet will find a way to bring them all back, that data is still out there.

On the other hand, white knighting a massive video game corporation and grandstanding about how heckin evil those pirates are is also extremely silly. Then again, this is a video game forum on the Internet, I guess.

Nintendo can be criticized about many things ($80 dollar games, game key cards, etc), but not this. They are well within their right to defend their IP, their partner's and their own financial interests for games they are currently selling on their current platform. Anyone expressing outrage over this is just a clown, especially seeing how futile this endeavor always is anyway. As long as the internet exists, the ROMs will always be available. You can't stop it.

It's how aggressive they are going after these people and the punishments they are pursuing, that even gives Sony and Microsoft pause. So apparently we aren't alone in thinking this.

And that worry is based on what? Nintendo is not showing signs of doing that…
Right now for example you can play Bahamut Lagoon translated into English. If Nintendo succeeds in shutting down all roms from the internet, you will never be able to play this game in English again.

And I have the feeling that this game is not exactly a top priority for any company to republish and translate.

Nothing is gained from roms being removed from the internet.

Got mixed feelings about that because the only way to play a patched version of the game most of the time is with piracy. Personally I don't really care, not just because I know enough Japanese to play RPGs but mostly because I don't really care about most games that haven't been released in the West, there are far more games available I want to play as to go hand pick one that hasn't been translated. I can understand fans of the series wanting to play, though.

And truth be told now people mostly play with guides because they don't want to miss anything so you could just use a guide to play Lagoon skipping all the text.

You don't care for fan translations, fine, but don't expect people to think like you. Playing a game in Japanese by skipping all text and using a guide is nothing like playing the same game in a language you understand. It is a shitty experience overall.

You can also own a Japanese copy of the game if you want to feel "better" about it.

As I said, I understand people wanting a fan translation and I don't think everyone should think just like me, however legally speaking fan translations are considered derivative work of a copyrighted work and thus they are illegal without a permit. So, it's not different from saying "Emulators are good because I can't buy a game (whatever the reason) and the emulator lets me play it for free".

you do know you can get translations on legit sites that you patch in yourself right? That's what I do for saturn and playstation 1 games.

https://www.segasaturnshiro.com/saturn-community-projects/saturn-translations/ is a place use where you can find patches foe Sega Saturn games. edit: some links might go to full roms. most are just patches. I will delete the link if need.

but the main problem with the sites in the op is that they had switch games for download.

Maybe. But it is because of fan translations that decades later we see the likes of Trials of Mana being released worldwide and even remade.

Fan translations are fine, they are non commercial anyway. If publishers can't see the interest, it's their loss.
