Profits matter, but here's what some guy in a suit that gets paid more money than most people on this board has to say about Nintendo's performance:

This is exactly why fanboys keep going back to the "At least Nintendo is making a profit arguement." Nevermind that it's games have lost some of their luster, that you can't get the level of variety or quality of games on their home console that is on the competitions, the only place to find that level of quality and quantity only on their Gameboy line, and that each year they continue to loss market and mindshare. "Oh, but they still make at profit. And why that makes me happy, I have no clue. But Yay!!"

Can you back this up with facts? They are still the number two publisher in the world. They sell more games than Sony and Microsoft. The problem comes that 3rd parties cannot compete with Nintendo on the GameCube.

If Nintendo went third party, they would have a good chance of taking out EA as the number one publisher.

I'm of the belief Nintendo would doom any platform they support from a third party perspective.
So it is good that they have their own little atoll where they can do what they desire and it's not as if their platforms costs you an arm and a leg.

Playstation(PSP) = incoming competition!
Saturn(DS) = quickly thrown together machine to hold off said incoming competition. Machine fails to gain any signifigant market share.
Dreamcast(GBA2) = having alienated your entire fanbase, you are unable to attract any potential buyers because you've released too much hardware too fast, confusing all your old fans who simply said, "Fuck it! I'm just gonna get a Sony! At least there's only ONE!"
