I don't know where you get these numbers but they're wrong. Nintendo's last reported figures from their 1st half results:

http://www.nintendo.co.jp/n10/news/041125e.pdf
(last page)

shows "Life to date Sept. 2004" sales total for GBA (including SP) of 14.56m in Japan, 28.61m in The Americas and 14.96m listed in "other" i.e. rest of the world including Europe.

Now compare that to Sony's PS2 breakdown of sales by region:

http://www.scei.co.jp/corporate/data/bizdataps2_e.html

As of the same date, September 30th 2004 the sales are 17.89m in Japan, 30.23m in US and 25.88m in Europe. I think this validates my original point, room for expansion in the European portable market, not so in Japan and America.

Nintendo must be close to 16.5 millions GBA by now in Japan, more like 31 millions for north america and I have a very hard time to believe that it could be below 16.5-17 in europe, were it is still a huge device (excluding UK of course)

I was speculating on today's numbers, not end of september ones. I got it wrong for Japan and the US, but I though that during CES, nintendo said they were close to 70 millions units sold worldwide since march 01 but my memory may be wrong

The 70m figure can be easily reconciled, they'll be including sales of GBC in that timeframe along with GBA and SP.

that website is in the oldschool NES colors of black, grey, white, red. is the box retro?

ah, the good old days...

you'll see a higher quality version of it later with more promo material. Europe is getting a different colour scheme.
