From the game's website:
Nitronic Rush is an experimental survival driving game developed by students at DigiPen Institute of Technology. Use the cars many abilities (including boost, wings, and jump) to avoid obstacles that the city throws at you. Prove your abilities and impress the announcer by performing tricks. In many ways the game is a tribute to racing games of the 1990′s, but with fresh graphics and gameplay.
The entire game (including the graphics, physics, and architecture) was developed from the ground up using C++ for the PC (Windows XP, Vista, and 7) platform. It was not created as a mod or using any pre-made engines such as Unity or Unreal.
From the Ars story:
The game's website lists the gameplay as "experimental," but they aren't fooling anyone; this is a love letter to the underappreciated Rush 2049, and I called Hemenway out on it. "I'd say that Rush 2049 definitely had a strong influence on the design and feel of the game early on, but we were also inspired by tons of other arcade racing games such as Trackmania, Wipeout, and Hydro Thunder," Hemenway told Ars. "We really wanted to keep the fun and arcade-like feel of racing games from the 1990s, but with something new in the way of modern graphics, physics, and sound design."
