No 9/22 1up show?

mckmas is taking this entirely too seriously or personal...probably both. I think that the 1up guys are probably some of the most geniune journalists in the industry.

Anybody who has listened to the 1up Yours podcast knows Luke gets riled up and angry at each ridiculous news item; but many often forget to notice how he heaps praise on those that deserve it. Luke’s news posts often have a nice editorial touch to them as well. While many want “just the facts and only the facts,” I find it refreshing that a journalist is comfortable mixing his own opinion with what is being reported. Since Luke always writes in a manner that makes fact and opinion easily distinguishable, it’s a safe practice in my opinion.

I guess the same goes for the rest of the guys. Some poeple just need to chill out. Journalists are allowed to have opinions and personal tastes as well.

I love it, because it's so true. I'm seeing and hearing reports on F1 right now and this game is litterly blowing my mind.

:O

The game presence is right behind you cuz.

Hey, hey, hey. I like the guys too, but come on! The buck must stop here. I seen RR7 footage on Blim's website that looked incredible. DMC4 looked INCREDIBLE! Yet all we get is waah waah.

I'm not trying to attack their character at all. I'm just hoping that they step up to the plate like a few other websites have. It's obvious that there are lots of fun games to watch and play.

they did'nt just bitch about Sony, they also downplayed the lines for LO and BD saying it was just because they were shown in a theater by themselves and that they would not help the 360 in Japan. while Sony showed us they have some great looking games coming , do you think anyone but the sdf thinks Sony had a good conference? There has been way too much hype for TGS. all we have heard since E3 has been Oh Just wait for TGS, thats what Sony is saving all of the announcements and big guns for, when they are on there home turf they will show everything. the online structure the specs the exclusive games etc. And what did we get? PS3 cures cancer,Ken is great and ****ing AFRIKA a safari game you can't even hunt in. You can't blame people for bitching, we dont even know if we can invite freinds into a game yet?

They seem to be having a good conference to me. That being Sony. Remember it's not over yet. I give them a 'B' so far. The games get a 'A' but the information gets 'C-'

And my above you a few spots up had me commenting on them crapping on some 360 games. My whole post was based on that.

I gotta agree. 1up, or at least the podcast, recently has been nothing but bashing it seems. They're always joking about Luke not playing games but from how he talks it seems like he actually hates all videogames (you know, except halo :) ). 1up news as well is getting pretty terrible in how it's becoming completely editorialized. I don't mind editorializing and expressing opinions but can I just have my straight up news before the news crew takes digs at various companies. Blog about the news, that's the purpose of blogs isn't it? Love you guys but it's getting to much for me.

Them's fighting words.

Garnett has been talking out of his ass a lot lately. I'm not sure if he's misinformed or he just jumps to conclusions, but it ain't right.

I wanted to hear why Garnett felt Front Mission 1st was the most fun game he played on day one and the other's bitching interupted him. Let's get an update added to Jeremy's preview.

Show is still on for Saturday afternoon U.S. time--hardcore editing going on through the night and as we speak.

(BTW most updated show schedule can always be found at the1upshow.1up.com)

I'll make a thread tomorrow when it's up (if someone doesn't beat me to it).

PS--You will hear from Shane.

AWESOME MARK. mckmas8808 might be going off a little but I'm not surprised myself. I was working while TGS was on so I sort of missed the conference and came in here to see the games and I was suprised at how competent and appealing a few of the titles were - then to hear Garnett spewing all the hate was sort of bewildering... games aren't there? They're spot on about the game suprises though - but for most of it, the show was good for SONY.

MIA:

Killzone (not suprising seeing how much they advertise for staff in EDGE)
Heavenly Sword (not suprising seeing how much they advertise for staff in EDGE)
8 days
Naughty Dogs Game..

and I don't understand how/why anyone can construe the HDMI+pricecut as bad news. I just couldn't.

Blue Dragon, FFXIII (what's up with the new trailer did you see it), White Knight, Lost Odessey, and the other 360 JRPG that I can't remember. You know the damn near perfect looking cellshaded one? The one that looks like Rogue Galaxy's CGI? Those 5 games right there should send a tingle up your spine. It's doing that to people here at GAF. Why not you guys?

Ummmm, it's not sending a tingle up my spine.

I still love the 1up yours podcast. The sony bashing wasn't any different from the Nintendo bashing last week, I don't really care since the podcast are great fun to listen to either way. It needs more Mark Mcdonald though.

I see its time to bust out the badge!

Truth be told, the last podcast was dead on. Sony has been hyping the PS3 in ways that made it out to be the next-next gen console. Color me underwhelmed, but apart from some great Japanese games, it is the same level of technology/experience as the XBox360 released last year.

Shouldn't we be upset about this? I love videogames and have had every US machine made since the fairchild system-F, but COME ON - The Sony hype machine started in 2003 and - I for one - expected more. MUCH more. I will get a PS3 when I can find it, because of the Japanese games - but I am more interested in experiencing the technology of the Wii.

As 1up said, Next-gen came out last year and Sony wasn't there.

I get the impression that quite a few of the 1up guys feel they've been assigned the duty of championing innovation in the industry and will bash anything that doesn't immediately appear revolutionary. A brand new turn-based RPG? Yeah, same ol', same ol'... "how conventional", let's dismiss it! Give me a break. Not every game needs to revolutionize the genre to be worthwhile. It's not isolated to this one incident with the podcast, I can't even count all the times I've read similar sentiments on 1up editorial/blogs. Who knows, maybe they like playing the part of the jaded journo, but it's ridiculous.

To those who seem to think less of Luke's views because apparently he doesn't play many video games I say so what? Does he need to play as many games as shane to have just as a correct and valid view of the industry? I say no. Most of the people in the industry that are most respected don't even like to play video games, such as Miyamoto.

Apples to oranges. A designer's role doesn't involve publishing their opinion on the state of games or platforms, nor is that why they are respected.

Why even make a new game if it offers nothing new? Too many companies think all you need for a next-gen game is to make the graphics better and that seems to be enough for many gamers. The character animation in the MGS4 trailer was PS2-level. DMC4 does look like just a graphics update (and not that impressive compared to many of the other videos from the show). Sure, they might be still a year away, but the current footage is the only thing we have. Opinions will surely change once we get footage closer to release and I don't see a problem with changing opinions when new information comes along (Crackdown, for example, has looked better with each iteration).

i just don't know how you can argue w/ people who have played all the games. yeah we've seen fancy trailers, but they've actually played most of the games. I love the bashing because i get tired of journalists candy coating games, even the shitty ones, w/o giving a real opinion of the progress of the game. They shouldn't give games the benefit of the doubt and say, oh it's got a year left, it'll all be fixed.

Example: Heavenly Sword IS a 5 minute, button mashing tech demo at THIS stage..that's what they're reporting and that's what they should report. It probably won't ship like that, and i hope it turns out great, but journalists should report on the current state of the software, and if it sucks then tell us. Sony's stuff looks pretty nice to me, but it isn't anywhere near what they've talked it up to be and 1up is bringing the heat to Sony for underdelivering. Same w/ the Wii.

I think alot of you forget the 360's launch problems and how hard 1up was on the system. I remember some very tough interviews w/ people like Peter Moore where they drilled him for the problems. Now Sony and Nin are getting the same treatment. i was entertained by the show, and i do think that 1up likes games. Garnet seemed to enjoy Lair, but at the same time reported on it's problems...like he should have.

Something i've already noticed is that i was blown away by some of the trailers (Motorstorm & Resistance) but when i see actual gameplay of both games, it just isn't the quality of those trailers. I'm not referring to the visuals because they're the same, i'm referring to the overall punch that the gameplay gives. Resistance nor Motorstorm are truly grabbing me like the trailers did..even though the trailer was in game and (edited) gameplay. I think the editing delivered a lot of the punch to be honest. But the games aren't done yet, and i'm still looking forward to playing both titles. Point of all this is that 1up isn't basing their opinions off of these awesome trailers, but on the actual gameplay that they've experienced themselves.

The new 1up show is going to be up in an hour or two. Or three. The difference of opinion in the 1up show vs. 1up yours this week is going to be...interesting.

And to a lot of other media outlets and posters on GAF. 1up Yours has a different opinion. They backed it up with reason and experiential evidence. Everyone's bashing Garnett but he was very detailed and clear about several games at TGS that he did enjoy, thoroughly. You're sitting here directing games journalists who are at TGS right now to GAF threads with shaky cam footage. Sorry, man, but that is completely bonkers.

Thank god video games journalism isn't just a homogeneous wank fest where once anything gets buzz, any criticism against it is completely abandoned. The PS3 does not exist in a vacuum. It exists in the environment it built for itself through PR, Launch Strategy, and Pricing Structure. Unless you can play a PS3 game literally off the disc with your hands, the system itself and the way it's been presented and promoted will most likely come into play when objectively looking at one of their games.

1up Yours is an equal opportunity offender. I've been rankled by the things they've said before (I have 'Slim Pickins' written on the ceiling under my freeweight bench. Helps me through the reps.) but I would never direct them to the all the resources we as Posters On A Message Board are privy to. As much as you might wish we at home are experiencing everything there is to experience from the TGS experience, we're not. We're seeing footage and reading impressions. They are playing the games. 10 posters on GAF can play the same game and each have different impressions of it. Why would you expect any less for game journalism as a whole?

Some of you guys are ****ing crybabies. Are you seriously that attached to a console brand that you get upset when someone bitches about it on a podcast?

The 1up podcast is great.

There's a world of difference between, "I'd like to see more from Sony, I'd like to see them do XXXX, etc.." and, "There's cracks in the House of Sony!"

Perhpas I shouldn't take it so seriously though, it is an informal show...

I'd say the 1up guys have been rather pessimistic about the industry as a whole lately, but I can't say they're singling any one system out. If you're one of those people that stains your underwear anytime your favorite gaming company gets their turn at being picked on, you might want to take a step back and find some perspective. Save that energy for something that makes a damn bit of difference one way or another.

Good job guys, keep up the good work.

Lack of debate skills? Look in the mirror. I don't see what you have added to this discussion and I've already posted my thoughts on this matter previously in this thread.

The fact is that the PS3 failed to impress many who weren't already PS3 inclined. When 1up reported this they got a lot of flak, most of it unwarranted. I defended them and support all who do.

The 1up show is more of an experience than actual useful game review show. I listen to it because it reflects the opinions of the people who are on it. When Shane splooges on and on about the PS3 I still respect his opinion, even though I don't share it. When Luke goes negative on the Wii, I respect him because that is his experience.

If you are tuning in to podcasts to get nothing but good news about your system, then you don't want to be challenged, you just want to feel good about your decision. There is nothing wrong with that, but you can't then cry that everyone else doesn't have that same opinion.

Waiting with baited breath for your debate skills to be showcased!

I think Garnett just fell prey to the mood of the rest of the group. It seemed liked right after the conference everyone is just tired of Sony's inability to outshine in the keynote.

i agree. this was another good, entertaining show, like every 1up yours i've heard.

i understand people disagree with the views of person/people on the podcast but to insult them because of this is ****ing ridiculous :lol

people need to chill out and enjoy a podcast for what it is and if you can't do this i suggest you avoid them.

I agree to some extent, but I also think that everyone (except maybe Luke) was just let down that the PS3 didn't stand apart from the X360 more significantly. Intellectually they knew it wouldn't, but emotionally they (and maybe all of us) hoped that it would. Sony has played such a cat-and-mouse game with promoting the PS3 perhaps even they were fooled.

There is truth about the law of diminishing returns in the graphics department > we're getting to the point where experience is more important. This is why many are so excited about Wii even though it looks like Xbox1.

If they weren't up until 5am drinking nothing but Red Bull waiting this 'big' surprise to appear, it probably would have been a little nicer :P

so, sony said next-gen begins with them, and then the ps3 games 'only' matched up to 360, and they call them out on this and somehow they're haters? they give ms and ninty the same treatment, does sony have to get a free pass for 1up the be 'fair' or something?

i'm baffled at some of the reactions in this thread!

Well when you bring a junkie down right in the middle of a high by talking about reality and shit, it can be a bummer..

*admittedly points to self*

I just started to listen to these podcast so I think I may be guilty of taking it a tad bit too serious and not allowing room for the guys to express their personal opinions..

Now that I think about it, don't we talk about games the same way when we're just sitting around bs'ing?

Heck, I'd be pissed by then.
And from what I could tell, they seemed to be hard on the system, but then, I haven't played it yet so I can't really fervently disagree with anything they've said.

You did know that most of the guys in the 1UpYours show wasn't even at the conference right?

Anyways, get show guys. I liked the 1UpShow this week.

While this 1up show was one terribly pathetic PS3 cirlce jerk, there was one good point that Shane brought up amonst all of the giddy bs that came out of him. The PS3 certainly did deliver (especially for those whose expectations were grounded in reality and not with their head in their ass). And the doom and gloom that's been on the internet and the media the last couple of months can mainly be attributed to XBots that don't want to see Sony succeed (which is just sad fanboiism at its worst). Other than that notable point this 1up show provided no useful information at all.
