No Man's Sky: Foundation Update (v1.1)

I haven't played this game in a while, but did this receive a graphical upgrade? it looks alot better or is it just that I'm playing on the Pro and a 4k TV which upscales, or maybe it's just Placebo.
Dunno about console, but PC version at launch wasn't running the game at 1080p no matter what setting you chose, so it was a blurry mess.

So they still
haven't acknowledged the lies? Lol
But they're the victims here.

They did make changed to flying and combat. When you're flying in your ship, if you're turning and apply the brake, you'll do a drift and turn faster. That's a big improvement. Also they said that when you successfully defend a freighter from attack they'll reward you somehow. And there's now a 'survival' component which ups the difficulty or something.

And remember this is the 'Foundation Update.' It's the start of things to come. Given the past few months regarding this game, did you really expect them to address all of your concerns in the first update? No, right? Well, they're making progress. And really, this game probably isn't for you, honestly.
A hand brake is a very minor improvement and isn't going to suddenly make flying fun. As for survival mode, notice that they don't describe it. It is probably just upping damage numbers.

The problem is where their focus is. Notice the difference in the amount of information given about the base building verses flying and survival mode. That's the same type of thing that set off my red flags about NMS before release. Then it was the fact that Hello Games would go into great detail about their procedural generation, but then suspiciously claimed they couldn't talk about other parts of the game because they did not want to spoil them. As it turned out, the other parts of the game sucked which was the far more likely reason why they weren't mentioned in detail.

The general problem with NMS Is that it's focus is too much on the world building and not enough on what you do in the world. Base building is a continuation of this. It looks like it would be something fun to do for a hour. Other than just to see it, there appears to be little reason to do it. It doesn't appear to be connected to the stated goal of getting to the center of the galaxy at all.

I do think they need to acknowledge stuff like this

before real healing can begin. I hope the update is great for ya'll that are playing it, though.

A game where the goal is to improve your inventory size appeals to you?

I thought the goal was to get to the center of the universe. No wonder people got so pissed! They were playing the game wrong!

I wasn't aware that there was only allowed to be one person who dislikes the game a thread is discussing per thread.

What an awkwardly worded sentence. And there's no limit to the amount of unoriginal parroting in a thread as far as I know.

That is a meaty update patch...

I never lost faith in them.. regardless of what others feel..

It's subnautica in space and if future patches are going to be this good.. well they might redeem themselves in some people's eyes.. (hugs his ps4 collectors edition)..

There's a difference between criticism and outright trashing of people who've clearly reached far, fallen a bit short and still kept going. 99% of people bitching have no idea how much sweat and tears a relatively small group of people have put in to make this game. Yes they could have handled their comms a lot better but I'd wager that marketing and PR people had a bigger say in how NMS was handled than the people actually building it. The amount of grief they've gotten would be enough for a lot of people to say "fuck it" and not bother carrying on trying to get to where they want the game to be. It's really easy to criticise people when you haven't been in the trenches of software development.

I'm sorry but I think that's bullshit. I've worked in a high pressure work environment as well but no one was compelled to lie about projects.

reached far, fallen a bit short and still kept going.

This wording is what I'm talking about you're not addressing the direct situation and for lack of a better term sugar coating it.

No PR person told Sean Murray to specifically go on late night talk shows and tell lies I don't believe that at all.

I have a lot more empathy for the small developer who puts their "blood and tears" into a game and doesn't lie consistently to produce thousands of sales.

I'm not going to argue the point with people who clearly just want to enjoy the game. But I will say just own what that you're okay with Hello Games' transgressions as long as they make and continue to support a game you enjoy playing. Don't patronize people, dismiss obvious factual criticism, or try to turn Hello Games and Sean Murray into a victim. That is not okay.

Good update, hope they continue it. Just wondering why they couldn't communicate this stuff earlier. Lay out a roadmap for updates that you know are going to happen, then surprise people if you can do more.

That's a great update but the inflated sense if self-importance shines through yet again in that tweet.

Never miss a chance to show how small their studio is, what they've gone through to make the game, etc. Enough with that shit already.

Still hasn't come clean on all the bullshit. Still playing the victim card.

Again, the update sounds cool but it also sounds like something better suited as an addition to ALL THE OTHER SHIT THEY TALKED ABOUT.

Sheesh.

I've been excited for bases/freighters ever since they were announced and decided to stop playing until they arrived.

This all looks phenomenal.

Yeah, OK. I get where you're coming from. I'm coming from a different place. Cheers.

Boy are you in for a surprise.

Base-building looks more robust than I thought, so I was wrong with my prediction on that front.

I still think they're missing some of the key things that makes those kind of activities fun in other games, but we'll see.
Needs land buggies or Rovers to make traversal fun, jet-pack hopping is tediuous
Good idea actually.

Hahahahahahahahhahahahaahhahahahahahaha.

Damn, if only I'd known that all the items I'd been gathering which ended up being used to increase my inventory space were actually supposed to get me to a place that doesn't reward you for getting there.

How you read that tweet is likely dependent on how you view HG; I don't get an victimization. . .at all. Simply that the last few months have been rough (it has) and that this patch means quite a bit to them (it probably does).

Boy are you in for a surprise.

You start over and do it again. And? That doesn't negate getting to the center being the goal. In You Must Be A Boat your reward is starting over and. . .building another boat. Didn't stop the game from being well received.

I like the new direction of this game, it appears that HG want you to just look at the galaxy you're in as a huge playground.

so we have the same scenario as with drive club? a game which wasnt finished/polished when it was released, in the end, after tons of updates its the praised game we know now?

There's a lot of interesting stuff there, but at the same time, it feels like they're just entirely avoiding the problems people had with the game in the first place. Other than the inventory stacking, this doesn't seem to address any of the complaints about repetitive exploration, a lack of NPC interaction, not much variety in things to find, things like not being able to fly below a certain height etc or any of the missing features.

It even feels like this is entirely just going around what the game was meant to be. It's like with this update it's gone from an exploration game where the goal was to explore and get to the centre of the universe, to a typical survival game.

Yup; sorry you were confused about the game. Maybe try a wiki next time?

Yeah, and bad at doing this. It's not even removing the suit's glass so it still has this weird shader on top of the picture.

Not to mention you need to press4 (FOUR) times to turn off the hud.

Menu
Settings
Turn on photo mode
Accept the warning message

Why can't I press some button on the controler?!
You could already take HUD-less screen by pressing Options and Share at roughly the same time. The interface disappears for a split second.
You need to time it correctly, but after a while you get the hang of it!

fantastic you mean

I agree land buggies would be awesome - I immediately wanted one after seeing The Martian

.
For sure they messed up big-time with overselling the features of the game. I still think some of the criticism has been ridiculous though. I mean, it's a video game for fucks sake. Don't buy their next game and move on.

Exactly. Slightly bemused by the "redeemed themselves" posts to be honest.

Massive update. Glad to see some QoL additions and expansion into economic trading, base building and freighters. Wonder how much it'll cost to snag one of these freighters. Max sized ships got real expensive real quick.

Will boot up when I get home this evening to see the changes, but again won't really have time to dig in until next year. Looking forward to whatever they add on top of this.

This looks great.

I'll probably come back in a year.

Im in no rush to play this game, and if all the patches are like this, the game should be really really different. It'll be exciting to jump back in to something that is vastly different.

That video came out in December of 2014. Features got cut. Happens in games all the time.

I don't understand why people are still so mystified by this. It's a much more plausible explanation than "Sean Murray is a horrible man who lied to trick people into buying his game!" too.

There's some nice looking additions to the game there, and new content is certainty nice so i'm not downplaying it or saying they shouldn't do things like this, but how does this solve the problems with the game people had? All the original complaints and controversy still apply to it, none of that has been solved by this update. How does avoiding those issues entirely make up for anything?

Missing features like that were still mentioned up until near release, it wasn't just years before. Even a video 2 months before the original release date showed features that then weren't in the game.

First thing that hits you in just how much cleaner the game looks now thanks to temporal AA. The motion blur helps out a lot, too. Every 30fps game should be required to have it.

Did you actually watch the video in the OP?

This is an example of piss poor, clickbait reporting to begin with and it has been horribly misconstrued, because they only allowed Murray to give short yes or no replies, rather than provide nuanced answers. It's just as easy to attach gameplay elements that exist in NMS as it is to claim Murray was "lying".

Can you grief other players? ("A little bit.")
You can give planets and animals dumb names.

Can you customize the look of your character? (Murray is unsure and doesn't want to say yes, but ends up answering "sort of")
Your weapon is the only part of the player model that you can see, and you can equip different styles of weapon/mining rays.

Do you ever get a look look at your character? ("You can see other characters and they can see you.")
You can see NPCs and they seeing you. Murray did not give a clear 'yes'.

Will you be able to play with your friends? ("Yes")
Arguably the worst offense. While playing with your friends can be taken in a wide sense , this question needed a more specific answer.

Is there a competitive element to this game? ("Yeah, if you want that, yes.")
Scanning and naming as many systems, planets, flora and animals as possible for other players to see.

Edit: Ah, now I remember. You're the same fella who went on a crusade in the NMS OT to prove to people enjoying the game that there will never be an update to it. Glad to see you're taking it so well.

Game still doesn't look anything like those E3 videos.

Spend time building a base...why? So you can sit on the same boring planet mining shit, or now let robots mine for you.

The feather in my cap will always be the 60 dollar refund I got from Sony because I said the game fucking sucks.

Like I said, features get cut. Yes, sometimes even right before launch.

Just recently with Watch Dogs 2 I recall hearing that a multiplayer invasion feature had to be disabled at launch because it wasn't working correctly, and that game came from one of Ubi's behemoth studios.

I'd like to see reviews from people who have yet to play the game at all with this new update.

I was feeling hesitant on buying it at first, so I'm glad I waited. At the same time, seeing them put in the work necessary, I have a feeling I would enjoy this more with the update, or perhaps after the next big one.
