No Man's Sky: Foundation Update (v1.1)

i hope they put out VR support

They have bigger fish to fry.

Plus, it'll pay to have other try to tackle the entire "freeform ground-based player movement without causing audience to become nauseous" challenge so they can implement that instead of trying to tackle it by themselves.

This post right here, folks. So much win.

Fucking GET IT through your thick fucking skulls, people!!
No? You can't just look at this game or anything surrounding it through abstract. There's too much baggage here. Way too much and it's not that saying anything is wrong - it's that saying certain things is wrong.

There's a right and a wrong way to go about this and they are choosing the wrong way. This shouldn't be difficult to understand.

Well that's pretty cool. Hope it better satisfies the many players who felt like they were ripped off and whatnot, and that it earns Hello Games some goodwill.

Can this thread be about the actual update perhaps? Thoughts/impressions and not the same, tired old back and forth about HG.

Is the update live for PC yet? Bought the game yesterday on steam because it was on sale. Was having a blast with it in the first few hours, I'm glad they decided to give it such a massive update right after I bought it lol

Just played about 10 mins on Steam, one thing that immediately impressed me was the performance, the game works so much smoother, at an obviously higher framerate on my rig, and it seemed that there was a lot less hitching and stutter than before, but it's still early to be sure. The TAA and motion blur add a nice level of polish to the overall look of the game, so that's also nice.

Another thing is that space flight and planetary entry worked pretty inconsistently and bad performance wise for me, but this time it was really, really smooth, even with the added asteroid density. I still haven't encountered a space battle, those used to bring the game to a crawl for me, especially a large 20+ ship battle.

There also seems to be some changes to the terrain generation, both aesthetically and performance-wise, so I've noticed there's still obvious pop-in/generation, but it doesn't seem to be so visible on the main terrain itself, more on the individual elements like trees, rocks, minerals etc. But even then, I was deliberately flying around fast and it looked like I could see mineral deposits (and their actual shape) from a bit further away, because before the patch I really needed to get very close to actually figure out if something was a terrain spike or a mineral pillar.

I'll be sure to try it out a bit more later.

You could just...let it go? I get being disappointed at how the base game turned out, but at some point you've got to realize how counter-productive it is to be so angry with HG lol.

Just watch them add some proper multiplayer / coop in a next update. That'd be dope, would totally get on board for that, even tho "just" that foundation update makes me wanna jump in.

Hate for the game? No I have problems with the dev and how they handled it from start to finish.

Also, how on earth is calling out their bullshit narcissistic? How is asking for them to address concerns of their community narcissistic?

Honest question. I'd like to hear why you feel that is narcissistic.

Edit: I'm being serious. If I'm being narcissistic by calling out Hello Games for constantly talking about themselves and not the concerns of paying customers then I obviously need to learn the new definition of narcissism.

It's not a single sentence. It's not just that one tweet. They have constantly reveled in their own greatness of their small team and mention it constantly.

How about mentioning the consumer? How about considering the consumer instead of themselves, for once?

I'm not engaging you on this. Just stop wallowing. this thread is about a patch.

You and Jobbs worry me. I wonder what happened to both of you that this particular game is something you obsess over. But I'd like to discuss the changes. We've all read more than enough about Evil hello Games. And like I said I agree with a lot of it. But you just... keep.. bitching. You get a timeout from me for now. and I hate doing that.

This is only true if you assume it would be impossible to release a satisfactory game.

Is that really so unrealistic to assume (that such a small team with troubles in development, including a flood in their offices, and likely running out of cash could fulfill the sky high hype around it) ;)?

I can understand Sean Murray let his mouth run wild and mix his hopes and ambitions with what was realistic for launch (without keeping people up enough up to date with feature cuts), but I can also see how there is a desire for retribution greater than the desire of accepting features coming with content updates as promised.

Sounds like a really substantial update, which is a step in the right direction for sure. Of all the things I might be excited about here it's more the algorithm / grspahical stuff than the base building - I hope it can lead to some more varied exploration, which seemed to be one of the main issues with the game.

In any case, I'll keep an eye on this. I dodged a bullet at launch so I'll wait for impressions, but it really is a game I want to like because my enthusiasm for what they initially revealed is very much alive. I just don't know if they will wind up being the studio that actually delivers it.

And lastly - the flyby posts and same old arguments about all the misleading marketing REALLY need to go. If you think don't think a substantial patch is enough to make up for the bad launch, then you're entitled to that opinion, but just take it somewhere else.

As gamedevs we have spent a lot of time thinking about what we say when we talk about our projects to make sure those things are true... If I don't know the answer to something I'll say I don't know the answer, and if the answer is no I say no. The conduct of SM/HG has been shocking, and I don't hate them, I just find the whole ordeal sort of unbelievable and for that reason I'm drawn into discussions rather easily.

I do hope you guys enjoy the patch though

FINALLY made it to my ship on survival!

Now I just need to fix it up lol.

Fall damage is BRUTAL btw.

edit: the sound of rain hitting the ship is so relaxing <3

I will play a bit of this later today to see what's up, but it's disappointing that this doesn't seem to offer much for players who have already "completed" the game. I've finished the Atlas Path on two different saves, completed all in-game challenges, and on my main save I've made it through three different galaxies.

All of the stuff they added seems like great quality-of-life for people who want to pursue those paths, but if you've already finished everything the game has to offer I don't see any real reason to engage with any of these systems.

Hope to be proven wrong.

Then PM me on how you think advocating for the consumer is me being narcissistic.

I'd love to hear your thoughts unless you feel throwing something out and not backing it up is a good argument. I explain my stances, it would be nice if you wouldn't back down and instead explain yours.

And to top it off: their tweet in the OP injected the "woe is me" slant into talking about patch notes. That's fair game for discussion, unless you just want to ignore part of the OP.

If you are going to sling words, you should be able to back them up instead of backing out of having to.

Hahhaahahahha

You don't get to basically describe the game as an MMO then say features got cut, it's actually a single player rock shooting game. FFS the lengths some people go to defend this stuff.

Also they continued to pretend that you could potentially run into other players right up past gold.

Also this hilarious article a few months before release

Please just stop. Go enjoy your patch, I hope it's good (genuinely).
Agreed

This update seems to fix absolutely none of the problems I thought the game had and add stuff I absolutely did not want.

Wow

Looks good, and the automated resource gathering is nice, but the core loop of shoot rocks to get resources to shoot rocks better is still boring. And single biome planets with nothing to do make exploration pretty uninteresting. If they can fix that, I'd be very likely to come back.

No place to go but up. They hit rock bottom with the release of NMS and they deserved some of the negative reception that it received. With that said, if they keep releasing cool updates like this, eventually, people will become more open to trying their game again. I for one am not going to right now. I'll see where they stand in a year.

I think they learned their lesson. They were quiet before this patch and when it got closer to release, they started talking about it. No false promises, just release what they have and let it speak for itself.

Heh has Sean's twitter account always said he's the Susan Boyle of videogames? XD

PC version still frame dropping for me at max...but I guess my PC needs upgraded anyway.

Ignore list is your friend. Seriously, no benefit to engaging with blatant axe-grinders. They aren't going to alter their position no matter what, and most importantly don't assume their position is universally representative of what industry people think.

Certainly on the insider forums I frequent reaction to this patch has been pretty much "Doubt it'll change people's minds. But its a laudable -if rather fruitless- gesture under the circumstances".

They didn't even advertise this, so why would you expect them to add it?

That's why I am bemused by the promise of multiplayer being broken. Through every interview Shaun himself said it was practically impossible to find another player anyway , yet because 2 random people found it early ( my guess is the spawn generation fuckt up to even allow that to happen), it's suddenly a massive broken feature .

Let's assume it was in , chances are if the spawn generation had worked correctly no one would have ever found anyone anyway . So the bitchingn is kind of pointless.

Definitely grill them on all the other missing features (factions , space battles etc), but multiplayer seems like the least important broken promise.

I never expected multiplayer and I never expected to see another player online .

Anyway hope we can get some more patch impressions in here , I will definitely rebuy when it's cheap and jump back in , hopefully by then they have even more patches planned .

Right, this looks great. Love improvements to graphics and seems like there's so much more to do. Different game modes is fantastic. The severe survival nature of the game put me off. I just fancy flying around and taking it in, and they've given you that now.

Genuinely might buy this very soon now.. great support. I feel bad for them the backlash they got, while much of it warranted, was of course really quite severe with people going a bit overboard, as is society these days. Game is far more appealing to me now for sure though.

Woah, this almost sounds... fun? I was dumb enough to spend time getting the platinum so I might as well go back and enjoy myself with creative mode a bit.

Wow

Well, think about it as update .1 in an Early Access game you paid $60 for. Given enough time I'm sure they'll add stuff like proper planetary systems and MP. Look forward to that 2020 1.0 release pls.

could you always land on freighter ships (after you saved them from an attack) and claim a reward from the captain?

edit: damn, i just bought a freighter ship that looks like a fucking star destroyer.

Yeah, it's the customer's fault they misrepresented the game up to release day, taking $60 for something that doesn't resemble what they pitched, and subsequently never explained or apologized. woe is them. if your insider devs club doesn't give a shit about users/customers I don't want in the club.

Looks very good for a first update. Might wait with a purchase until the second update to see where it's heading, but this is very tempting.

I had the exact same thought 1.1 doesn't have just enough yet but maybe the next one

I'm in the same boat. Just started it up in creative and looked at some stuff. It's still the same game; the update is called the Foundation Update for a reason though. I'm excited to see if they can actually give me a reason to properly play the game.

This looks quite substantial and should be pretty neat for anyone who was really looking forward to base building. I also like that they decided to put in both a stationary AND a mobile base in the form of a freighter. I wonder if eventually there will be multiple types of freighters you can buy.

All of that said, the one thing I think is missing from this update is bringing back a sense of purpose. It's cool that we have more things to collect and what appears to be an intent to add complexity to the resource tree (after all, why bother adding researchers when most people still playing already have all the upgrades?), but it doesn't sound like there's any change to the core loop of "get to the center of the galaxy, rinse and repeat."

Working towards maxing out my ship was a neat goal for a while, and then I hit it and was left with basically nothing to do. I want there to be something interesting to strive for once I've built my base and bought my freighter and all that, and I'm not sure this update alone is enough to bring me back after 60+ hours in the vanilla release. I'll check it out at some point for sure, though.

No.

My ability to give respect when it's due is spring loaded, ready to pop. The problem is HG hasn't done anything worthy of me to hit that spring.

They need to address concerns properly and stop playing the victim.

They've learned nothing and it shows. Until they do, they won't see much of a turnaround as we put honesty and integrity above hand waving and self-pity.

Shouldn't be difficult to understand.

So, are there more than one possible home base in a system? And how can I search for more? The only two bases are on dull or extreme planets so far for me...
