No Man's Sky: Foundation Update (v1.1)

Holy shit! Warped to a new system and a fucking massive massive freighter is here and I get a notification a battle is starting. Shops go and fight Pirates and I help out just like the e3 footage and after clearing the Pirates I got a new element called tropheum with a mission to land on freighter to speak to the Commander. Get a dialogue of accepting gift or not. Got 1 antimatter.

Screens below I took frantically. Wow!

Also, migrated my base to a legit tropical ocean planet. Here's shortly after landing. After I get glass tech I'll take pics of my beachfront property. It's literally 90%+ Ocean. Never saw so much consistent water without land in the 50 hours previous of playing pre-1.1

OH FUCK BOUGHT THE FREIGHTER! LEGIT STAR WARS MASSIVE:

How do you build?

For some items, hit 'z'. For base building, you have to claim predesignated locations is my understanding. Not too familiar with the base building, but 'fresh off the boat' I could build a save point and a couple of other items when hitting 'z'.

Kind of a big coincidence all things considered don't you think?
As a Sony published game, it isn't. There has been a few Sony published games with packaging errors, so is nothing out of extraordinary.

The sticker if anything was a way to fix it, since they never do. That it became part of a huge snowball was another thing. :p

That sounds awesome, and that planets looks really nice.

Can't wait to get a longer playtime.

OH FUCK BOUGHT THE FREIGHTER! LEGIT STAR WARS MASSIVE:

Buying this game. Fucking awesome!

Did they fix the flight floor? Flying around alien planets was what I bought the game for and that was no fun. I know there was a mod to fix this but I'm on the ps4.

I'll put it this way, this turned from a game i wanted day one, into a game i wanted when it hit 20 bucks. It hit 20 bucks at bb with gcu. So i bought it earlier today. Thats what all the negative press did, most of it HG's fault. Robbed them of 40$ Now after i get through my backlog ill give it a whirl.

Wow that's a great update. Will buy next year after a few more patches. Good job HG for working hard on the update and making the game closer to the original promise.

Jesus fuck Survival mode is hard as shit. Finally got to take off in my ship, killed by pirates immediately. 4 on 1. waaaaat

I need some things clarified though.

So now, launching off the ground takes 100% plutonium instead of 25? I go right to zero every time i launch.

Also, what is the use of scanning from within my ship flying over a planet? Not sure what the deal is but no matter where i am scanning doesnt reveal anything while flying. Only thing i can scan is in space when i look at a planet i can tell the resources. But i used to be able to ping while flying and get all the question marks to appear if i was near them. Not anymore. Do i need a special part or is this just survival mode?

This update sounds really good. I like what I'm seeing and reading. Very nice presentation on that introduction video.

Persecution complex? He received death threats.

Anyway his comment about what they've been through is almost certainly referring to the fact they've been crunching for months on end rather than any internet drama.

It's pretty funny that for weeks people have been saying "Hello Games are going down," "Sean Murray should crawl under a rock if he knows what's good for him," etc. as if the torrent of abuse from strangers on the internet has any actual bearing on an individual. It's like these people want to see their raging take effect and ruin someone's life, when in fact it's nothing more than noise getting in the way of meaningful feedback.

That's why they've been quiet. Not because they've been shamed into a corner by thousands of vocal enthusiasts, but because they've been hard at work listening to the tangible complaints in order to try and improve their product and do right by their customers.

There are many conflicting opinions on what HG did wrong, and some may never be able to forgive them for whatever it is they believe they did, but at this point it would be wise to simply let it go, and see if they can make amends. If it's "too little too late" and you're never going to forgive them, then surely there's no point in clicking on anything NMS related, or engaging with the discussion at all.

So how is the travel with regards to getting back to your 'base' planet - is it just a teleporting kind of deal or do you just relocate your gear to a new planet when you move?

Kudos to them on this update, it's the best first step to repairing the reputation of this whole thing.

Survival mode feels like it needs a little padding to start out. It feels like it ramps everything up to 11 right at the start. I've had to restart twice now because I've started on planets with no way to get any health and I can't even reach my ship before running out. I like the idea but it needs tweaking to be fun right now imo

Played the updated version for most of the day and....they actually did it. They made No Man's Sky great again! I can't wait to see what further updates will do.

Curious to see how hard it actually is.

My starting planet was inhospitable so getting my ship going was quite an ordeal, carefully/quickly gathering resources little bit by little bit, trying not to freeze/suffocate.

Any form of acknowledgement that they shipped the game missing tons of stuff would be nice. It's weird that they simply refuse to even acknowledge a single thing went wrong and makes it come off kind of oddly combative when they only make tweets talking about themselves and what they've gone through. What about your customers who (like I did) bought the game for sixty bucks on day one based on a lot of hype and promises that simply weren't in the package?

Does he have to beg for forgiveness on twitter? No. But some basic communication and engaging of their audience would be nice and I don't think any healing is going to happen until they do.

Dude, I seriously doubt you're going to get it. Them working on the game more and trying to make it somewhere close to what they aimed for is their apology. Talking got them into this mess. More talking isn't going to do shit. It will be picked over, accused of more lies, and theories will be crafted by people who don't know anything about making games. Not to mention an apology won't be enough, after that it will be demanded that there be an explanation, too. And that may not be legally allowed, they may be under contract to not talk about behind-the-scenes stuff.

It won't do any good. You already know they misrepresented the game. Everyone does. What good does an apology do in the current environment?

Edit: I'll be curious to see how they handle bases in future updates. If they re-roll planets, what happens to your bases?

I mean it's probably manageable but if you get a barren planet there isn't much around. I ran around both all over and it was literally all iron I couldn't get anything to refill health. I'll probably mess around with it more but for now I'm gonna start a new normal game, I wanna mess around with the base building stuff and I started on a pretty awesome looking planet. The caves look great now too it's not just the same looking thing or at least they've filled them with more and nice lighting.

Fantastic news! I haven't bought the game yet (Hitman is occupying me at the moment) but it's really great to see this happen. Mad props Hello games!

I never saw anything that looked like a river before, although I didn't put that much time into the game.

And they could still have the plants keep the color scheme, just have different models at least. Same with plutonium deposits and such, they used to use cylindrical shaped models before, they could just add those and some new ones back in, just for more variety.
The game was already getting flack for mechanical obtuseness, I think they wanted to maintain clarity for play reasons. I do agree that increased variety is essential to improving/extending the game.

It's weird that they simply refuse to even acknowledge a single thing went wrong and makes it come off kind of oddly combative when they only make tweets talking about themselves and what they've gone through.
Again, you're completely wrong. They have done more than make this tweet, and they have acknowledged stuff went wrong. Here's excerpts from their communication on the 25th (emphasis mine):
Hello Games said:
These fixed many of the most common or critical bugs and issues post-release.

...The discussion around No Man’s Sky since release has been intense and dramatic. We have been quiet, but we are listening and focusing on improving the game that our team loves and feels so passionately about. Positive or negative feedback, you have been heard and that will truly help to make this a better game for everyone.

Do the planets now rotate and orbit the sun or not? I was displeased that this was not a thing at launch.
There's nothing in the patch notes. Given that they seem to have had this in and removed it after playtesting, I don't know if it'll appear again.

Awesome. How deep is the ocean? Is the fauna there sparse?
Ocean was deep as usual, took about 30-45 seconds to reach the surface from the bottom. Planet was full of fauna. More and more animals spawn now than before too.

So how is the travel with regards to getting back to your 'base' planet - is it just a teleporting kind of deal or do you just relocate your gear to a new planet when you move?

You teleport from any space station to your base. You can then teleport back to that space station from your base, or fly up to stay in the system of your base. When you move bases lost of your materials end up in a chest at your new base and when you build facilities your hired members will return.

the new construction stuff sounds cool, though i never really followed the game much so i'm unsure how significant it really is. but in general, i love base building in sandbox games a la minecraft so i may end up grabbing NMS now.

Awesome. How deep is the ocean? Is the fauna there sparse?

I found a similar planet , plenty of water too , but the sentinel levels was off the charts and it was more violet/pink in tone.

I made it my home base. I actually surprised that i can see clean water in some places and so far it's way deeper ( the ocean floor ) than anything i've found previously.

Loving it.

It's ridiculous, this update. i had like 22 lmillions in money , now i'm down to 6 . There is now a simple way to trade more ressources and a Reason to trade now.

Also i can confirm that the space battle clearly got changed . i can't pinpoint what but it's way more fun now than before. i actually destroyed 8 ennemy ships without having to constantly go back to my inventory to restore the shields...

Lots of small additions unrelated to the base building in this. Like the other poster said, stopping attackers on freighters now lets you land in the freighter and get rewards and stuff. Really rounded out the systems all around.

Glad this game looks like it may find some redemption. Negativity was ridiculously off the charts on this game.

Is survival mode just hard mode? Spent about 30 minutes being confined to a single building because of the radiation but having no resources nearby to keep life support online (literally could not find Th or Plutonium (to build power cells) -- venturing too far would get me killed by radiation), but that's what it felt like. Resources were stricter, less available, and everything like jetpack etc was just less effective. Are there any other differences?

I tried Survival and damn is life support hard to keep up with no plutonium around. Cold planet is kicking my ass, died twice already. Thamium plants are a godsend if you happen across them.

My first attempt at survival mode.

Basically this but also gasping for breath lol

I'd say it's more than just ramped up difficulty, as you also lose all your items if you die.

From what people are saying it sounds more like a roguelike mode, which I think is really cool. But obviously not everyone's cup of tea.

Good Job Hello Games, you remind me of the an 80's Hulk Hogan, when he was faux knocked out and the ref would grab his hand and it would fall flat and be flacid on the 1st and 2nd count and suddenly on the 3rd count he would shake and come alive.

This post is rad.

I don't like the end product and am still salty at what they pulled, but hopefully they continue to support the game.

Also that song used is dope.

Looks like a great update, I'll get it installed this week and check it out. I really wish they made that gigantic flora PC mod just standard across both versions.

In normal mode, you can go to your corpse and get the items back. I guess that's not possible in survival mode, which is sort of a shame. Fun mechanic to have an objective like that.
