If only the space combat was better. If only the space ships controlled like they did in warhawk

I'd be happy if they controlled like Battlestar Galactica Vipers. But this patch is feeling a bit better so far on the combat front. The improved weapon effects and lighting add to the immersion, and I feel like the flight model is a little different. Need to play more though.

After an hour or so with the new patch, I like it. Resources seem harder to come by and there's more to go for than just check out the next planet variation. I have the beginnings of a base going on a temperate planet and it'll be fun to look for better planets to claim.

On my first trip into space with the new patch, I immediately got attacked by pirates while still in the asteroid field above the planet. Which was cool at first, until I realized that the space combat still stank and the asteroids just made it impossible to see the pirates. Fortunately, recovering your grave is still easy.

So what's the point of the game now? It was reach the center but now it's chill on your own planet, build a base and farm shit?

Do Hello Games even know?

They have added a bunch of stuff and explained how it's done but they haven't really explained why I should do it.

They definitely made resources more scarce which is good it definitely gives a more survival feel. The base stuff is cool and I'm looking forward to exploring and finding new base parts as the starting pieces are limited but the stuff built in the trailer looks cool and I assume you gotta find more parts or craft them.

I spent almost 4 hours just on one planet tonight just getting materials and exploring. Its also nice to see they added rare items to caves, it's nice to have reasons to explore them.

It's like all the other alpha stage survival games. Except without MP.

Have you heard of a game called Minecraft? The "goal" of that game is to kill the Ender Dragon but do you think that's all people do?

The "goal" of No Man's Sky was/is to get to the center, but how quickly you get there and what you do afterwards are up to you and your imagination. That's where things like the Atlas Path, base building, etc come into play. Not everyone is in a hurry to get to the center, just the tiniest bit of this game is about, ah, exploration.

Couple of things i still miss:

  • Darker/black space
  • Wider fov
  • Complete dead planets (no bases, no sentinals, just nothing)
  • More real like planets. There are basically no distinct landmarks, everything looks the samey.

Have you played the game before?

This has been possible since release day

really?

Yeah, I played, but i only remember actual deposits being fully destructible. I only played like 8 hours though

I never realized you could destroy every bit of terrain

oh that's cool. I didn't even know that.

can anything be turned into a resource or is it basically just to dick around?

It's good for making a shelter on planets with harsh atmospheres, and blasting your way to the surface if you're having trouble finding an exit from a cave system.

Not everything - sometimes it is better to mine using laser to get more yield.

"Granades" are good to make exit way from the tunnels/ caves. Just angle your shold or aim up and then jetpack hug the wall.

Seems like the point was always just to chill and explore. Reaching the centre of the universe was always kind of an "endgame goal" that most players wouldn't achieve (correct me if I'm wrong).

If you need someone to tell you why you should play any game, let alone NMS, it probably isn't for you in the first place.

Had to start over in Survival because my sound bugged out. Anyways after quite a while I made it to my ship, repaired the launch thrusters but can't take off because pulse jet is broken still. Forgot you needed both, which I think is stupid. Heridium is 17:00 minutes away on a planet that's -66 in the day and -75 at night. Such bullshit. One death so far but see many more in my journey for Heridium.

Well this beast is now mine. 7 Mil for this bad boy 13 slots sadly but I love the look of it

I just put a couple of hours into the game, first time I picked it up since sometime mid September.

They did a great job, I'll echo some of the things mentioned here that I noticed too.

- Improved sound, it was nice hearing the rainfall from within my ship.
- Regular bounties on nearby criminal ships, I've come across a 1-star 100,000 bounty, and a 2-star 200,000 bounty. I assume it keeps going up?
- I loaded it up in a system I was in previously with boring planets, part of the reason I bailed when I did. These planets appear to have had some life injected into them, more trees and grass (and variety of grass, this one planet had both white and purple grass in certain patches)
- New graphical effects in ship are neat
- Apparently some materials which could be mined previously are now locked behind a new upgrade
- I've come across LOTS of new materials, no idea what they're for
- I also got a 13 slot freighter, but it holds twice as much stacked cargo as my starship so it's good for storage

Also my house is on a near-inhospitable planet with constant rain storms and aggressive sentinals. Normally this would be the type of planet with frequent vortex cubes and the like, and it is, but I can only find the occasional 2 or 3 near the entrance of some caves. Did they alter this?

My builder gave me a blueprint for a beacon I can't build due to lacking another blueprint :/ There should be an interview process.

Maybe I missed any mention of it on the patch, but did they change the amount of resources consumed with each launch?

I hated it took 25% of your fuel with each launch.

It's 100% on Survival...

In normal mode, you can go to your corpse and get the items back. I guess that's not possible in survival mode, which is sort of a shame. Fun mechanic to have an objective like that.

No "grave" in Survival mode. It makes sense.

Does a freighter slot = 1 ship or suit slot? Seems kind of weird a giant freighter would have less slots then your suit or does each slot hold wayyyy more cargo!

pretty crazy, how much has changed. really feels different. most of the changes are really considered. visuals and audio are hugely improved.

one thing that still bugs me - storms don't draw when you are flying in atmo. big sandstorm or blizzard kicks up, you get in the ship and take off -poof, no more storm. land, storm comes back. probably a perf thing. but quite jarring. at least you get the audible warning when the storm is over.

also something has changed with the light casting. was on a planet with crazy rotational shadows. which unfortunately highlighted the low rez shadow map. but it's striking when it works right!

i assume freighters let you stack more per slot. the ship stacks basically double what the suit can per slot.

Haven't played NMS but from all i have seen, i see it as a Space Minecraft. So the "what do i do" thing seems no problem for people who like that. Some People just fly/explore around and chill. I'm going to buy it down the road to just do exactly that but i have to finish other stuff first (games, TV series, books).

If they keep adding stuff, this could be getting really good and addictiong in the coming future.

I've noticed that when talking to aliens that can be hired for the base, we can understand them perfectly, but all the pre-patch aliens still require us to figure it out and learn the language. This seems a bit of an oversight, or an issue to fix at least. If we don't know any of the alien languages, how would we know we could hire them for our base?

Hope that gets fixed.

EDIT: Perhaps there should be a new alien to hire - a translator. Someone whom has learned all the alien languages.

Apologies for quoting myself, but does no-one else not find this odd at all??

Just watching now. Planets with actually no life or buildings is something I wanted from the start. It felt so cheap that you were exploring these worlds but oops, you're actually super late and every single planet had been discovered and explored by alien races.

It was funnily realistic though... remember the "discovery" of the Americas by Cristoforo Colombo ;)?

Yeah, I was surprised by the added materials, I played a couple of hours in Creative mode and I can tell there's a lot of new things you can build with those. As far as I can tell, they made rare items even rarer, and they definitely made them less valuable than before.

Do I have to start a new normal game to make use of the new things on planets?

Nope, you can continue with your old pre-patch save.

they actually address the fact in the description, when you meet then, if you read it ;)

anyways they can't expect you to have learned all the languages that early. so this is A Game Thing.

also. Polo and Nada can talk. it's not unique.

I think they made this choice to simplify the building aspect. If you hire a Builder, you can talk to him and he'll give you some fetch quests in order to obtain new schematics. They're no common NPCs, and you don't have right/wrong answers.
It doesn't make much sense lore-wise, but I can see why they did that. The alternative would have been "learn a language 100%, then come back and hire the guy".

Oh, FYI, hired specialists have like 6-7 quests, then they tell you there's nothing more they can do for you, and you have to hire someone else. BTW, they won't disappear until you actually hire another specialist.

I started the game again and met an alien whom first told me about Nada and Polo and I could understand them perfectly, yet the description said something like, "the weird alien grunted in an incomprehensible language, but motioned to the tablet it was holding" - something like that. Seems like some of the descriptions need updating at the very least.

That said, I still believe there could be a way to keep it within the lore and have you pass a test before you can hire an alien. Like you already have with the other aliens. A translator alien would be a well paid gig! Or perhaps a new suit upgrade, which you can find, which helps with translations.

I just feel like the perfect understanding of these specific aliens is a little jarring.

so what's the consensus

I won't speak for everyone, but for me, it's the same game, with the same issues that turned me off of it in the first place, it still isn't the game I thought I was getting when I brought it, I didn't expect it to turn into basically Subnautica in space.

The survival mode doesn't mess around. Died too much on first attempt I just deleted save and tried again, got lucky on everything except zinc. Spent 20 minutes trying to live and find 6 zinc

Its sounds like you're absolving hello games of straight up lying in their media hype.

Cant say i really care as i fully expect every single commercial to be a lie. Hell, if i turn on the tv during daytime all i see is commercials lying about how amazing their ab-crushers and fat-evaporating sweat-belts are.

Played a bit post patch now.

Graphics seem much improved (on PC) and the "look" of each world much improved.

Base building seems interesting. Makes sense now I see you can warp to your planet and relocate your base if you want.

Freighters are cool - need to save to buy one now.

All in all with this patch game seems fairly solid as a new player. Interested to see what they can now build on this.

The launch price in hindsight was way too high and of course there was the marketing misdirection too.

That said at lower price there's a decent experience here now IMHO if you like exploration and classic SF space opera aesthetic. With more content additions could develop into a robust title indeed.

MP never interested me but I'll be curious to see if they can ever add it or if it technically wasn't possible.

MOving_goalposts.jpg

That's not , like not at all the point of my reply

The point was that you'd have to grind to try the new stuff and it's certainly not true.

Other game does building better ? Yeah and ? was that supposed to be a criticism of NMS ? Nobody was talking about that.

Lol, are you for real?

Is there a Creative mode that bypasses the grind? Sure. It's good if you want to TRY the new features. It lets you build things without having to worry about the resources but what else can you do?
What is the point in having a Freighter if you have unlimited resources? What stops you from going straight to the centre of the Galaxy if you have unlimited resources?

Yes, as a demo of the new features it's great, but it in my opinion is not nearly fleshed out enough to be entertaining on its own.

New features are a step in the right direction, but you still have to fix the main problem the game has: the gameplay loop is boring and monotonous as hell.

i believe you have to find a Habitable Base.

although you can build a foundation. hmm

hm. Well, for now I guess I'll just set up at the base it found. Too bad it's on a sweltering planet, the other planet I was on was one of the most chill planets I've found.

it still isn't the game I thought I was getting when I brought it, I didn't expect it to turn into basically Subnautica in space.

I don't expect base building to be the only direction NMS heads in. I think the addition of customizable freighters says that they want to beef up space exploration and hopefully flesh out the factions that are barely there.

I think the number one thing NMS needs is a dynamic quest system to give us short-term directed goals. "smuggle cargo X to system Y", "eliminate Jargo Zorphax for 500k credits", "steal secret plans from sentinel outpost", etc. And flesh out the NPCs and factions so it all feels like a connected society you're immersed in.

Why am I not surprised?

"I can't be bothered to comment on the actual update. I still have tunnel vision."

The update doesn't fix the issues I have with the game, it adds a layer of gameplay that

a) I wouldn't have wanted in the first place

and

b) Just compounds some of the issues I already had.

The gameplay loop hasn't changed.

If that's tunnel vision, then guilty as charged.
