'No Mercy' is being removed from Steam worldwide after developer is target of harassment

Rape fantasy is extremely common, present in the majority of women.

And that's all that games are. A fantasy.

I would think that most people here would agree that murder is equal to, or worse than, rape. But those same people would not want to see the murder simulator Hitman banned from Steam.

I'm talking about something a little different. Not banning, but stigma. Rape fantasies are perfectly common, I'm sure. But there's social pressure to keep it to yourself and to treat it as revolting if you hear about it.

It's the kind of thing you lie about, not brag about. In other words, we are expected to self-censor. This also would have happened waaaay before woke cancel culture and probably with even more intensity depending on the time period.

I would absolutely yank this off my store because leaving there implies that I'm just fine with it. Making a product and posting it publicly for sale with your name attached is putting yourself out there in a MAJOR way.

I also think the fact that it's a woman's group putting it on blast is causing a lot of the consternation, here.

As of now, they're banned from schools. I guess censorship is good, then, right?
I'm probably one of the people most against censorship in this entire site, and I absolutely think that censoring what children see/are exposed to is 100% necessary. What kind of idiot parent feeds everything to their kids unobstructed? The idea of parenting is to safely guide a kid through their vulnerable and formative years.

That has nothing to do with what's being discussed here, which is censoring fiction for adults, which I am 100% against. Make it age gated, make it able to be filtered in/out, and let adults decide what they want to engage with.

Grab it, grab it noooow. (but ya its basically that game Hatred all over again. If you go back further, GTA, even further mortal kombat)

People so sensitive nowadays jeez xD

I was gonna write a pseud-defense of games with questionable subject matter by going on a "games as art" tilt and comparing it with similarly controversial films (Irreversible, Hard Candy, I Spit On Your Grave etc.)...

...then I actually looked into this game a bit more.

Then I realized this game wasn't the hill worth making that argument on. It basically seems like an exploitation game rewarding and even condoning rape & sexual abuse. Nothing actually resounding to say about it, no greater message analyzing what factors enable it and no condemning of the act. No perspective on the many consequences that stem from it or the physical & psychological damage it leaves on victims.

Nope; just play a porn game where you get to have fun being a rapist.

I can see why it's been banned. Unfortunately that'll make it harder for a future game which handles such subject matter with actual class & taste (and introspection) to get any sort of audience because it'll likely be banned similarly. And it's in those cases where the medium & industry do a disservice.

...Oh and I don't condone the doxxing of the devs, BTW. Doxxing's almost never okay, unless you're doxxing an actual criminal of serious crimes or someone in the progress of committing a serious crime. Those are probably exceptions where doxxing is tolerable, still have to be very careful tho.

I don't like too much censorship, but for me, rape and incest is a different story. For me, that is very wrong. Yes it's just games but I still have my conscience and discernment and for me that is not morally right.

I'm not sure what sort of individual would think this would be a good idea for a game.

The bolded also has nothing to do with what is being discussed.

It has to do with my reply to your post, but less so in the subject of the thread. The rest of my post was about my thoughts on the subject of the thread.

I see. So you agree that censorship is good, but only when you agree with it, personally.

I think children should have a filter on what they have access to, in school or at home. I think adults should have their own choice on what to engage in, as long as it's legal. Dunno why you're trying to hit me with a 'gotcha' here. It's common sense.

What about bestiality. I remember a game that made that one of its main focuses of a marketing campaign.

Not trying a gotcha. The conversation started with the parallel of burning games as next gen nazis and banning books like actual nazis.

I mean nazi escalation aside, I think it's fine to ban books from schools if they have controversial subject matter. But not from public libraries.

It should be the parents' choice if they want to bring up controversial subjects to their kids, not the school system's. There's plenty of material out there to cover in schools without the controversial stuff.

Who are these games even for? I remember people freaking out because MK lost its "sexy costumes" which I never knew people got off to MK games.

Here's a better solution: get married.

Libraries should have age rating categories, same as any game. I'm not pro ban, but I don't really care if they are banned, as Internet makes it pretty trivial to find anything one desires.

Freedom is scary.

If you want to ban things that hurt people start with cars and swimming pools.

If you want to know where a "line" is follow the law not something you arbitrarily made up after you found out about a game you hate.

Attention seekers gonna seek. Harassment is unacceptable. Videogames do not affect our behavior. Violent videogames do not make us violent. Violent videogames like Manhunt should not be banned. Videogames should not be held to a higher standard than any other form of entertainment. Stay based.
Justin Timberlake Idk GIF
thank you this 1000%

Its alright for porn and extreme fetish games/things to exist.
But it is also not right to have them the lime light. Somethings just needs to be unspoken and hidden from.

I mean it was hidden right? Until the one decided to write an article and publicize it, don't think it was on the frontpage.

The porn section is hidden by default, but this is like kind of next level. Someone who is looking for p*** games could easily find this to be way too much and worth reporting.

I should say though, I don't really know if this is some sort of high watermark. Maybe there is some other s*** on there that is as bad or worse? Seems like someone's pushing the boundaries here. The game description on the page is totally nuts to me.

There's games on there where you play as Hitler, with a harem of furries lmao

What the fuck devs thought was going to happen releasing game like this? It was fucking bad taste.

I don't agree with harassment but the devs themselves should feel embarrassed trying releasing this crap to people.

Ban all offensive games imo. Hatred was a good start, people also had the right idea behind banning Mortal Kombat and GTA.

Fyi, Hatred is still available on Steam.

Even No Mercy wasn't taken off by Valve, the dev took it off himself.

This "game" doesn't seem to be taking the piss on abuse or anything of the sort, it really seems to unironically focus on abusing people and trying to make it look cool. If you think this shit being taken down is somehow an affront to free speech, all I can say to you is jesus fucking christ what the actual fuck??
Me and my group of friends have a stupid tradition where we gift each other porn games on Steam on our birthdays so I've played a few, most are just for taking the piss and stream for the boys on discord but some can actually be genuinely engaging so if this leads to Steam removing adult games from the platform it'll be a shame.
But I do hope they implement some kind of curation system that prevents this kind of garbage from ever making it into the platform.

LOL I do the joke p*** game gifts too. Nobody seems to send any back to me though...

Which is why the AO section is by default hidden on Steam...
Which is an error as AO doesn't mean pornography. According to ESRB:
"Adults Only 18+ : Content suitable for adults ages 18 and up. May include prolonged scenes of intense violence, graphic sexual content and/or gambling with real currency."
AO accurately describes every GTA game which explains why they're all rated PEGI 18 in the EU.
The ESRB's system is designed to sell games to kids via parents - with zero games getting the AO rating.
If Americans traveled to Europe they'd see their kids M rated games have 18+ ratings.

Accurate AO ratings on violent games would boost game sales in the US while protecting studios and platforms.
American parents need to know that Rockstar's games aren't for kids and kids need to be told that they can't play Rockstar games.
Rockstar needs GTA6 to be the tiniest fraction on that ESRB chart with the AO rating.

Steam's not going to remove adult games. There's 2 or 3 on the top 10 trending at all times. (3 right now)

Steam must make money hand over fist on porn games.

They're also always highly rated for whatever reason lol. If you could search game ratings by tags I swear "Sexual Content" would have the highest average.

Huh? In what world? AO is the kiss of death for any console game. No major retailer will carry it, including Xbox and Sony's own marketplaces.

And Nintendo's, but that's a given :messenger_grinning_smiling:

Usually they don't but with GTA Sony will have to make an exception.
It goes without saying that MS would change their AO policy in a heartbeat making it an Xbox exclusive just to bury Sony.
In reality it's a strategic move Sony should have made earlier just to insulate themselves legally in the US.
GTA6 as a PS5 exclusive with an AO rating will be good for Rockstar and Sony.

I don't see how, even if they did allow it, sales would increase. And there's already precedent of GTA getting an AO and being pulled from shelves..
