No more waiting OR Wait until X06!

So X05 is all but done. Journalists from all over, using X05 as a very good excuse to consume naturally grown, occassionally hallucinogenic drugs legally, are heading (or about to head) home. I'd like to make this as objective and troll-free as possible, but this is a public message forum, so lets just throw that out the window right now.

Since the dreadful MTV 'unveiling', past E3, through the summer, beyond the mediocre XBox Summit, through TGS, all I've been hearing from X-Box fans is "Wait until X05".

So, realistically, was it worth it? Was it the event to cement the system as a serious contender? Did the event change your overall opinion of MS' potential juggernaut, or did it confirm the ever-mocked/much despised 'X-Box 1.5' moniker? Did it restore any faith in MS' questionable PR these last few months?

I hate to say it, but from the hype *admittedly from many here* I expected X05 to be much more important. Again, when you hear "wait until X05" for a solid 4 and a half months, naturally expectations rise. Unless I missed something significant, the biggest pieces of news to me involved the Too Human Trilogy (which looks terribly generic, IMO) and id making it's first game for a console from the ground up.

So what do you guys think? Was X05 worth the wait and hype, or did it feel you with an overall apathetic feeling?
Naturally I expect the usual responses from the Sony fanatics and Xbots, but I hope to get some real objective comments.

Personally, I've been on the fence regarding the 360. Hearing all of this "alpha" and "beta" kits talk, combined with the now infamous 'wait for X05' since the 360's unveiling, I was hoping for this to be the show that really drew me in. Sadly, it hasn't... although RR6 looks fucking awesome. It's not enough for me... and a lot of questions I had (backwards compatibility, solid launch line-up, etc.) were not answered.

I'm curious to see the reactions of other people, like myself, that were hoping to be sold on this system from this show... a show that many here heralded as 'the show to prove X360's strength'.

Wait until X06?

care to elaborate?

I've noticed you seem to be an X-Box supporter (but please correct me if I'm wrong), so I'd be curious to get a more detailed opinion from you.

More like "wait until Nov 22nd"

Best launch line-up ever. I don't see the problem posed by this thread, but enjoy yourselves I guess.

It won't end well if people come in here with blatent fanboyism, if that's even a word-
again, I aim to get the impossible: fairly objective views of this show... particularly from those that were on the fence about the system up until this point.

We have yet to receive hi def vids from all games, and what thoughts of what people there are thinking. Personally, it's never been in doubt

Powerful hardware? Check
Great exclusive games? Check.
Company's commitment? Check.

It has the ingredients for a successful life

The only big dissapointment was PD0, IMHO since X05 was supposed to be the event in which we would see the dramatic overhaul it had allegedly undergone since its laughable pre-E3 presentation. And while it doesn't look like total garbage (except for Joanna's face) it is obvious that the game will be decent at best.

However, Oblivion, PGR3 and RR6 look like AAA material to me, so I'm fully confident that the X360 will have a great launch quality-wise. I think those three games alone justify the premium price of the console.

It was an OK show for them. Some of the games look really fun to play, and I am excited for them. Unfortunatly I am still not wowed by the 360 hardware. PD0 failed to impress me, but games like Full Auto, and Chrome hounds look like a lot of fun.

So what you're saying is:

If we arbitrarily revise history to retroactively reflect that everyone was expecting the show to feature the second coming of Christ in a box, then we might have reason to be slightly disappointed.

You have a point there sir, as Christ did not , in fact, make an appearance.

No complaints here. X05 exceeded my expectations.

I expected more from X05 - a confirmed launchday lineup, full details of the initial backwards compatibility, direct feed high quality footage of PD0 that made everyone go WOW, and several new titles announced.

It didn't quite happen so I'm feeling a but "blah" for 360 now.

...wha?

I still, for the life of me, don't understand why there is no direct feed out. Other than that, I can't say. In grainy footage, these games looks kick ass. Now, give us some shit in 720p.

Maybe G4 owns all the direct feed footage? :D

I know i'm picky when it comes to games but from the current 360 lineup (and i'm including the launch window and 2006 releases) There are very few games that I really want. Then again the xbox has this too.

Yeah, X05 solidified X360 as a serious contender.

Crackdown looks interesting, Peter Jackson & WETA on Halo is nothing short of awesome, Too Human FINALLY rears its head, Kameo is looking better and better, PGR3 continues to shine, Condemned looks like it is coming through, Bioware on X360 was a pleasant surprise amidst all the PS3 rumors, id and co. making Wolfenstein home to MS makes me happy, we finally see some info on RR6, and I'm sure there's more that I'm forgetting.

On the other hand...I'm still WAY confused on PDZero. And X05 only added to it. I'm also disappointed in no complete launch list announced. No Halo 3 was also a little disappointing, it would've been a pleasant surprise but I can't complain a lot.

MS did well, I think.

There's no more waiting because we finally got to see games like PD0 and PGR3 from gameplay viewpoints. Plus, 2K Sports and EA have let loose on their next gen offerings. Anyone not amazed by either dev/pub is not a gamer, period.

Games not touted as part of the "AAA" lineup looked excellent as well. Full Auto, Condemned and Chrome Hounds, all SEGA titles, looked great.

JollyCorner, what more could you have asked for from the event?

I can think of a few things, such as BC lineup and having high quality trailers and feeds available for the public. As far as game content goes, perhaps a sneak peek at Halo 3 would be too much to ask for. AFAIK, Live wasn't a highlight of the show, not much new was shown. Other than those things,

I think it was a good event that not only has me sold on a 360, but at least 3 more titles that I originally wasn't planning to get.

that seems to be my problem, as well. I'm hoping that changes in the system's first year or so.

X360 should be a beast for FPS and racing games, though... especially within the launch window. Unfortunately I'm like a mentally challenged kid in a youth-league debate competition in relation to my FPS skills, so naturally it's not a genre I care too much for. :D I love watching, but playing? I'm just a deer in the headlights to more experienced players.

The show was far from a bomb, but it didn't have anything really great either. I always thought shows like this were graded by surprises or OMGWTF moments, which X05 didn't have much of, if any. We knew Bioware and SK were bringing games, and the trailers were so short they didn't show much to get excited about, and does anybody care about Wolfenstein anymore? It's kind of sad that the biggest news out of the show is Peter Jackson executive producing Halo. So basically, it didn't change my mind about picking up an X360 at launch, because I still didn't see anything that was worth spending $400+ on, especially with having limited time to game since i'm in my senior year with a bunch of Computer Science electives to look forward too and 18-20 credit hour quarters. My PS2 and Xbox should hold me over quite fine. Hopefully the non-retard pack system is $300 when either Too Human or Mass Effect come out, which is when I'll get my X360.

PDZ, Kameo, Oblivion, PGR3 all looking fantastic and (importantly) all confirmed as launch titles along with a couple of sports games. That is the best launch line up ever (even if PDZ isnt another Halo). Mass Effect, which looked a hell of a lot like a new gen KOTOR, ID coming out with a game developed from the 360 platform first (even if it is another Raven game :urgh ). Dead Rising, Crackdown, TopSpin 2 all looking like they will turn out good too.

It was a great show as far as im concerned.

PD0 may interest you if that's the case. I can imagine it feeling very different from Call of Duty 2 and GR:AW.

Again, may I ask what you thought was missing from X05?

if pgr3 is at 60fps at launch, mark my words...we haven't seen ANYTHING yet and thats exciting!!! hell even where its at right now its fucking nuts. THERES A WHOLE DAMN CITY WITH NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO POP-UP!!!! MY GOD!!! *faints*

Ive already preordered my 360 and Im content with that.

However, this event really didn't make me say WOW about any one title. The wow titles are still good and all but games like PDO which had to prove something proved very little to me.

Of course Im just pissed off at how Madden is turning out...

Anyone else getting a disconnect here? He thinks Bioware and SK's trailers were "so short they didn't show much to get excited about" but their release is the trigger point for his console purchase? umm....

Seems like a good opportunity to say this, but I'd like to commend everyone in the thread for responding in a respectful, intelligent manner. Not that it's worth much, but I appreciate it. :D

I can understand that people are dissapointed by the lack of information on the full launch lineup and the backwards compatibility, but I really wonder what else people were expecting.

PGR3, NBA 2k6, Gears of War, and many other titles showed the power of the system. More importantly, the press got to actually play next-generation titles that are arriving this year and early next-year. The majority of X360 games that are not PS2 ports look really good, even the low-profile titles (for the most part).

As people have mentioned in Speevy's lineup thread, the X360 has a far more solid first several months than any previous console (especially if you compare the Japanese launches to this launch). People that are not MS partisans admitted that the lineup was really strong overall as it covered most of the major genres with appealing software.

New games were announced. Sure, I guess there could have been more, but X05 needed to focus on showing off the early software. E3 will be about '06, this show had to finally show the games coming out in '05.

I have been a fence sitter if there ever was one. My first console choice is Sony and the Japanese developers, but I have respect for Rare, Blizzard, and other western developers like Bioware. I also don't like MS as a company, but there is no denying the 360 is a nice machine.

PDZ looks good to me. I like the cartoony style, maybe a holdover from my Nintendo days. Oblivion looks good as well, but it appeals to the fantasy fan in me. Kameo would be a third launch purchase for me if I knew more about its replayability. Although I generally don't like racers, PGR3 appeals to the graphic whore in me. For sports, only hockey is noticeably absent, so really all game types are supported at launch.

The clincher for me though is the promise of Bioware games, Gears of War, Dead Rising, and Lost Odyssey, N3, and Blue Dragon. GRAW may eventually return to form. The next Wolfenstein is also a good thing. Add Live's new additions to the package, and I'll definately pick up my preorder. BC is great, but I doubt MS really cares about it.

This doesn't mean I won't get a PS3 at launch as Warhawk, Heavenly Sword, and Motor Storm all have my eye. Add the promise of DMC4, MGS4, and FF/DQ games from Square and it will be my main console. But the 360 will fill a niche I didn't really utilize much last generation - online play.

It was really some kind of 'wow' moment. Admittedly, that was probably my own damn fault for getting my expectations ridiculously high, but that's my honest answer.

Again, I also wanted some more concrete news about BC and a solid US launch line-up. I was also hoping the EGM rumor of the Silent Hill Team's new 360 game would show up. PD0 also has me completely confused. Like I said in another thread, we might not really know what this game is made of until we actually get it in the system... it's just so damn enigmatic (or has some of the sloppiest PR in the history of any game, even FFXII :D)

Eternal Darkness and KOTOR were 2 of my favorite games this gen. I have complete faith in both SK and Bioware to make exclusive X360 games that will be truly great and worthy of a next-gen console purchase. Obviously, if both games turn out to be complete turds or letdowns (which I HIGHLY doubt), I will rethink my console purchase. Even though I think both games will be some of the best games next-gen based on who's developing them and will buy and X360 for them, that still didn't make the trailers all that exciting or good. Hope this clears things up.

I'm inclined to disagree because I know that what they are trying to do (emulate every single title individually) requires an insane amount of effort, money and time. No one is really forcing MS to do so, but they seem interested in having the 360 play Xbox games and due to the fact it would be impossible to do it any other way, they have to do it the absolute hardest way. If they said something similar to, "we'll only convert the top 30 best selling titles", then I'd agree with you to a certain extent. But it seems like they will continue making games compatible until the consumer doesn''t care.

WHAT.

RTCW is one of the best multiplayer games ever. News about a next gen sequel fills my pants and I know I'm not alone in that. This game will be golden.

I'm calling it right now, Wolfenstein will be the game PDZ wishes it was.

but won't you also need the HDD (aka the 'real' pack) in order to play the BC games, or has that been shot down?

I'm not defending those buying the Retard Pack, but I do think it would be realistic to assume a decent amount of US consumers (particularly parents buying for their kids this Christmas) will be getting the $299 package.

That's a good point. But I don't think it should say anything about MS's commitment to BC, rathar it speaks volumes on how they view price as being essential to selling as many consoles as they can.

It is a bad thing, yes. It hurts some games, as devs know that not everyone will have an HDD and such. I'm just explaining MS's reasoning, that's all.

Oh for crying out loud, this is getting ridiculous.

Xbox 360 has, without a doubt, the best launch line-up ever. Maybe it doesn't have the equivolent of Halo or Mario 64 at launch, but it has the deepest stable of quality launch games the world has ever seen.

It has a myriad of announced first and third party exclusives that will power the system for the next year or two, and it has even more unannounced games (Halo 3 anyone?) that will push the system beyond that. There are more than 200 games already in development for the system, and that number is just going to grow geometrically in the months and years to come.

Xbox 360 will simply be a juggernaut, but despite all of that, forum-dwellers all over this miserable internet continue to piss and moan and whine because somehow Microsoft is screwing it all up in their minds (nevermind all the Xbox-haters that will troll endlessly without reason).

Put a sock in it because you are all idiots.

Absolutely. I don't know why there aren't more titles out there that ape the RTCW multiplayer. Some have tried but none have come close of matching it imo. It's hard to go back and play some idiotic death match crap or regular capture the flag bullshit after playing Wolfenstein.

X05 was a success IMO.

All of the games shown improvements from before, and there was a bunch of nice announcements, new media of most games, hands-on time with the games for the press, and a partial list of launch titles.

The only disappointment to me is how Microsoft released their direct feed stuff in such a tiny resolution. I wanted 720p trailers and for media to get direct feed of all the games.

I agree with the OP.
X05 was a mild success, definitely, but I feel that we will still be hearing wait until y event when the true power of X360 is shown, or a big announcment. I mean, what I got out of the event was that some games no longer look like total ass, and the good lookers are still, looking good. Announcements were pretty tame.

As for the discussion here that the launch lineup is the best ever. Thats true for a console, but then it doesn't have much to compete against. I mean, the launch was originally hailed as the most spectacular thing ever and its slowly dwindled.

That doesn't excuse X05 was hyped as so much more...PDZ was hyped as so much more...etc. We (I?) expected alot more information and announcements. We had to wait for months of "wait for beta kits, wait for final kits, wait for TGS, wait for X05", I just don't think the wait was really worth it.

Weel, even I have been expecting more news, and I must admit that X05 didn't change my opinion on Xbox360 as I already decided to get it.

I simply think that we might be disappointed from X05 AS A SHOW,
but not disappointed from what Xbox360 is ginvin' us.

Xbox had probably one of the best launches ever had from a console.

Xbox360 is launching with titles like: Pd0 (that beside crappy movies, seen in action is really great), PG3 (superb), DOA4 (everthing a DOA fans could ask for), Oblivion (possibly the best Rpg ever made), NBA (simply gorgeus), Kameo (very interesting game with a great style), Call of Duty 2 (follow of one of the best war-inspired game) and other valid titles like the others from EA (some semms very good), I expect Ghost Recon 3 to be a good title, and do will be Quake 4.

So we can expect even a better launch.

The future?
If you didn't love Xbox franchise there's no sense bothering and talking bad about X05 as an excuse.

If you loved Xbox's games we can expect the follow ups of Halo, Fable, Ninja Gaiden, Fatal Frame, Winning Eleven, Jade Empire.

Add to this all the new projects like the new action game from Team Ninja, the trilogy from Silikon Knights, the two games of Mistalker, the exclusive rpg from Namco, different titles from FromSoftware, FASA's exclusives, the new brand from Bioware, Lionhead support,...

If you wanna really see things, they're already here.

There are great things at launch and many to come.

If you see even just one of the launching game(s) and you turn back to Xbox you'll understand how idiot is to talk about "Xbox 1.5".
And we're comparing Xbox360 with the most powerful console of this generation.

If we move to compare tecnically Xbox360 with PS2 well...
...there's just to laugh.

Xbox360 is really a full next generation console.
Has already next gen titles and will have more in the future.
Ps3 will probably be a bit more powerfull, probably the difference with Xbox360 will be half the difference that have been from Xbox to PS2.

And, all in all, I choose a console for its franchises.
I loved Xbox's ones and I'll buy XBox360 to play its games, even if it was less powerful.
I think that beside a not-so-bright show MS is giving out a system at a great price with great games from day one.

And when PS3 will be released I'll buy one to follow PS3 exclusives.

But the effect to play things like Oblivion or PGR3 or PD0 this November will be surely much more impressive than playing slightly technically better titles on summer of next year.

Today, technically, the closest rival of Xbox360 is Xbox, but XBox360 has a great leap over it and playing XBox360 titles gives u a real difference.
Sensless to compare Xbox360 to PS2.

But when PS3 wil be out, it's rival will be Xbox360 and there won't be the same gap.
Not considering that XBox360 will be close to it's second generation titles, while PS3 will be running just it's first gen titles.

So why should I wait?

It was a pretty good show but then I don't ask for much from these over hyped events-E3,TGS,X05,etc.,anyways. Too many E3 have just disapointed me to the point where I don't hold them any show in high regard as you guys do. This X05 event was cool, but I wasn't expecting anything more than videos where there was more game play shown, and to this end-the show delivered.

He shoots, he scores.

Now, bring on the 360 launch.
