No PS3 Release Date @ Spring 2006 ???

Just wondering...But they haven't said anything nor done any kind of anouncement regarding it. I am seriously thinking in the chance that PS3 might be pushed to the 2k6 winter... Are they supposed to do any kind of anouncement before E3 ?

Much speculation about PS3's presence at CES this year, wether we get a release date of some kind is anyone's guess.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. If Sony was smart they'd be launching the PS3 in North America first this spring or at worst summer.

It's not that PS2 lineup has THAT many games to come but well, on top of my memory:

MGS 3 Subsistence
Ookami
PSO Universe
Shin Megami/DDS game (some)
Motorcycle game from PD
Onimusha 4
DMC 3 SE
FF XII
SEGA's Yakuza game (I refuse to spell it wrong just one more time :P )
Enough for a full year ?

Give people time to learn what the games are. Yeesh.

Oh great another PS3 release date speculation thread.... just what I needed to keep my midday going...

go and find out when MS announced the release date of the X360, then come back and tell us if you've changed your mind on your post.

Well, it certainly was announced pretty close to the launch of the system...but well, I have the feeling like if PS3 was gonna be delayed in spite of PS2 good sales.
I actually believe that the PS2 can do a great 2006...

Sept. 14, 2005

But people had played Xbox 360 games. People had played the PSP almost a year before it launched in the US.

No one has played the PS3. Is that good?

Yep that's also true...If it had been playable at the TGS, their schedule would make sense. But since there is no major show before that hypotetical spring 2k6 release I am a bit skeptical about it.

Is spring a good time to launch a console?
Wasn't the PS2 JP release date around spring ? (4th March 2000)

I agree with this. Microsoft has a snowball's chance in hell of cracking the Japanese market, but they can most certainly do some damage in North America and Europe. If Japanese gamers will wait for the PS3, why the rush to launch there first?

PS3 has been on Sony slideshows for years now. All signs point towards 2006. Just because we don't have much visibliity of actual games etc yet doesn't mean its not coming out.

I think we should wait for CES and the supposed February conference to have an updated idea on the state of PS3.

I definately think Son is going to make the PS3 launch.

If you have to remember Sony did the same damn thing with the PSP launch in Japan. They didn't make one damn announcement near the launch til a couple of weeks prior. I personally thought that they would have never made the launch, but they did.

This is typical Sony style if you ask me, don't worry.

Wrong.

Sony has planned a massive PlayStation Conference in Japan for February, and Kuturagi himself has stated that the conference will come 'on the eve of the PS3's release', and that it will feature playable titles. It will also be open to the public.

There is also CES in January, wherein Sony has acquired the central stand on the floor, which is an insane 12,000 sq.ft large. They have something big planned.

Not to mention Sony can launch in the summer in NA and and still use E3 as a springboard, which is what I'm expecting. The PSP showed them that by launching earlier in the year, they can effectively have two major sales periods in which to sell at full price (launch and then Christmas, instead of combining the two).

Japan -- March/April 2006
US/Canada -- June/July 2006
Europe/Australia -- September/October 2006

One things for sure, whenever they launch it, im not missing the ebay gravy train this time.

In addition it appears Sony has some sort of exclusive access to Cell chips until the beginning of March.

Ah well, that was some I didn't know. :)

Ok...ok...I thought their next show was just E3 :)

Everything is understood now.

1. MS had nothing going for them other than 360. It's not like the Xbox is gonna have a big holiday or anything. So showing the games and hyping their system was of far greater importance to them than selling Xbox1's. In contrast, Sony's shipped 100M PS2s and still hasn't dropped the price below $150. There is much more life left in the PS2.

2. There is absolutely no point in hyping the PS3 now. For one, it will do nothing to affect the 360's holiday season, which will be supply-constrained, not based on demand. So it would be like unloading the arsenal while the shields are still up. All they would end up doing is cannibalizing PS2 sales, which still has to sell at an unreasonable $150. Plus, they want to promote the PSP in its first Western holiday season. Two products with life left, should enjoy a moment of peace before being overshadowed by the third coming.

3. Winter CES and the PS Festival are coming up. They are both in the New Year, which means they can try to halt/stiffle 360 sales post-holiday. That is the time to mount an assault. PS3 launch software probably isn't very complete, or very pretty at present. The buzz alone is working for them. Waiting for the new year allows them to build anticipation over a shorter period of time, and work the community into a frenzy.

Last I checked, Howard Stringer repeated the Spring 06 line not more than a month or so ago. It's coming. Is it gonna be Japan first? Who knows? It doesn't much matter anymore. I think they're greatest enemy at this point is gonna be supply, regardless of release date. Rather than worrying about games being shown, I'm curious to know when manufacturing of the main components begins. PEACE.

As far as I know, first time PSP was really playable was at the TGS that was 2 months before the Japanese launch. Even there, the playability was extremely limited.

More relevant, I think the first time Xbox 360 games were playable was at this years E3, which was 6 months before the console's launch (those games at E3 weren't really running on anything resembling X360 though, they might as well have been demonstrated on the PC, and some in fact were)

Yeah man. I hate preordering, but I refuse to miss out on this capitalist bonanza. eBay, her I cum. Hell, I'm gonna try paying for my PS3 with my profits. :D PEACE.

For a system like the PS3, which will come with dumptrucks of hype and media exposure, it's probably the best time. Take care of the hardcore/early-adopter crowd in spring and have time to build up strong hardware and software reserves for the holiday crowd at the end of the year.

Launching during the holidays obviously has its benefits, but the biggest drawback is that you have more demand than supply. Demand is great for hype, but hype doesn't add to the bottom line.

No amount of Playstation 3 units at launch will be enough to meet demand.

If they ship five hundred thousand, they will sell five hundred thousand. If they ship three million, they will sell three million.

Remember this.

The PS3 launch will be the most insane launch in the history of gaming.

First off, I agree with everything you said; great post.

Secondly, since others enjoy making 360 to PS3 comparisons, the 360's main chips were both finished in late August, and they were able to launch just under 3 months later. Cell and RSX (along with BR drives), according to SCE's SDK timetables, are to be finished this month, as PS3 Reference Tools are going out very, very soon (seen here):

So Sony right now is on pace to be able to fabricate actual PS3 systems within the next 60 days or so. A March/April initial release (in Japan most likely) is very, very doable in my opinion.

Also interesting to note, look how many SDK's have gone out to devs now:

PS3 development is in full swing. :)

I agree with this. Seeing the buzz the 360 accomplished makes me wonder how high a level the PS3 launch will get. I'm hoping for a Fall 2006 release.

I don't expect to see it in the US until the summer at the earliest. Sony keeps saying Spring 2006, but they've never once clarified what (and where) that means. They've keeping it like that just to be slick and make people think the PS3 could launch in the US in the spring, but they've never once came out and said that. It's their own little PR game to try and keep some people from buying an Xbox. It's not a bad move on their part.

I anticipate a MASSIVE E3 showing with tons of playables on the biggest franchises and an insane announcement of a June/July launch, complete with huge shortages that will miraculously sort itself out in mid-november, in time for Sony to bite back at MS' short lived lead into the next gen.

Imagine the press conference and they show all the awesome games as part of their presentation, then say they will all be playable on the show floor, then say they will launch the console in like 45 days......
