Getting the gamepass upfront sum is likely the best way from Xbox.
I'd agree that's probably the best case scenario when available, just we're hearing that availability is getting less and less these days for 3rd parties.

Maybe it's an extra tough one for NRftW given the genre it's in, in a world where MS is happy to have base Diablo IV on ps+ for exposure, to open up potential for recurring revenue, and where there's already strong competition from another title in early access and already on console, PoE2. Probably not though, if the game is good enough they'd find a way. At least this game is attempting it's own spin on the genre.

This has really got you triggered huh?

Attacking a fellow gaffers game, a game that released into early access in 2024 with pretty good CCU numbers. Its still in EA. Meanwhile you were stanning for avowed and pretending it's a success, a game from May this year. Go look at its numbers instead, a game you were calling a success, and stop trying to shit on this game just because you're hurting.

I have the mindset that if a third party game doesn't take advantage of the console, doesn't need to be exclusive. But financial subject is equally important - you can't put your effort on something that won't do much for you

If NeoGAF becomes more and more like the purple forum, don't be surprised if people stop posting here as well.
Everything I can do for this forum to not turn like *the purple* one I will do

damn developer had to come shut you gaf Xbox is Dead guys down… yall gotta touch grass man
In fact no.. he confirmed the game is not in development for the xbox and after they are finished with the main platforms they will "talk" to xbox and figure out the best course of action.

Xbox is not dead yet.. just on life support

Folks, can we drop the conspiracy theory insanity? If NeoGAF becomes more and more like the purple forum, don't be surprised if people stop posting here as well.

So no, it's not a shakedown, it's called common fucking sense.

What our community has been wanting the most is Co-Op and Console support, so we want fulfill those wishes as soon as humanly possible. We're already hard at work on Co-Op so people can play Wicked in Multiplayer pretty soon. And after that the idea is that we'll release 1.0 sooner than initially expected so that we don't have to deal with the hassle of being an Early Access Game on Consoles. Wicked is already in a pretty great state, so by the time we exit Early Access, we'll be golden.

And in order to get there fast, we'll first support the platform that has the most users purely out of resource reasons. We're a comparatively small indie studio, so doing a console port at the quality level we want is not a small task. Porting to Xbox means porting to Xbox Series X and Series S and that'll take more time to optimize compared to porting to PS5 and PS5Pro. So we're most likely going to do PS5/PS5Pro first and launch there in order to make fans happy and supply other ports later.

That's literally all there is to it. And yes, we'll need to discuss with Xbox and Nintendo what the best strategies are to support their platforms and their features in the best way possible and that'll be an ongoing discussion.

So there's nothing to see here, it's just common sense with us having to make the right moves given the resources we have while making sure we give players what they want as fast as possible.
If you want to sell an indie game on console, PS5 is not really the best place. Supergiant Games already knows that.

You do have a point there.
Moon Studios should try to lower the score to 60% so Phil Spencer would personally call them and offer them anything they want to put the game on Gamepass.
Your comment is funny for the opposite reason at a time when GamePass has been receiving a ton of highly-rated games, some of which are candidates for Goty this year..... 🤷

By that logic they should only do PC and forget consoles.
If the console with bigger install base is not the best console to release first, where should they release it?
Switch 1 specs would require a ton of tinkering to get the game to run there.
Xbox players don't buy games, most Xboxes out there are GP machines.
And Switch 2 install base it's still small.

Which only highlights the GamePass problem.
The only reason those games are played on Xbox it's because they are on gamepass and devs are getting money upfront for it, they don't have to nervously wait for sales to see if their games are profitable on Xbox or not.

Watch out, they're oofing

Ooof.

Like listen, Mr GrantyDaNasty - I'm sure you can see this post. You have no obligation to post here, but to still post on the Purple place of all places, you are not beating any allegations my guy.

"What allegations?" I hear you cry, my guy.

The one that you are a massive knob for starters.

The install base doesn't matter as much as you think. What you need is active users who buy the type of games you're doing.

PS5 users generally don't buy a lot of indie games. You know, Hades 1 was released first on Switch 1, then PS and Xbox. Why would they also make the sequel a timed exclusive on console? Because they have the numbers. They know. The sequel will be a success on Switch 2 obviously.

Switch 1 was also the way, but I understand that some devs had to skip it for performance reasons (but I also think that more devs should have targeted this system in the first place). Ori games sold well on Switch 1 btw, it would be fun to know how much the physical release sold against the Xbox version. I wouldn't be surprised if we're talking about 1 game sold vs 8.

I'm sure devs have statistics of those things.
I only have a PS5 and the last AAA game I bought was Elden Ring. I generally only play AA/indies.

Every year Xbox sells less and less, and the consoles are almost impossible to find in some countries.
Making a Xbox version when resources are very limited makes no commercial sense.
Xbox is a liability for devs now.
Even Square Enix thinks very carefully now before releasing games on Xbox.
Don't be such a doomer, wait until next E3!

I'm not sure where the idea that PS5 users don't buy a lot of indie games is coming from.
Shu said indies were selling three to five times more on Switch a few years ago. Then provides an anecdote that some games sell better on PlayStation now. Can't find any data to support that though.

A few years back, one of the reasons I got that job from Jim–we'd been criticized by the indie community. They said that PlayStation doesn't care about indies. You don't hear that kind of criticism anymore.

When I started that work five years ago, our indie partners would say that when they released their games multiplatform, the Switch version would sell three to five times more than PlayStation. Bit by bit, that gap has narrowed down.

Last year we had lots of anecdotes from our indie partners that their new games were selling better on PlayStation than any other platform. That's amazing. Some games sold better on PlayStation than on PC.

We have a strong team inside the company supporting indies

It would be obvious though, when you reach the end of a cycle, the userbase is not as active as before, and Switch 1 was really outdated. Even me, a Nintendo fan, I didn't want to play Stray or Outer Wilds on Switch 1. The downgrade was too much.

It doesn't mean that PS became better for indie games vs Switch, it just means that it was the end of a long cycle. Switch 2 is and will be basically the same thing as Switch 1 vs PS (or even better, because this time, the games will look a lot better overall).

I actually have a gaming laptop mainly use it for rts and vr. It's just not the same experience as a console. I just want to keep my gaming as simple as can be.
Try connecting it to a TV and start up Steam in it's big picture mode. It's VERY close to a console experience.

Steam can be feel a bit limiting though if you're coming from Xbox and Gamepass etc. I use Playnite instead now, boot into Playnite fullscreen mode for a controller-only UI, use an Xbox controller. Feels almost exactly like a console and can access Gamepass as usual.

LOL
What alternatives did Switch 1 users had?
It was either Nintendo games and/or indies, because all big 3rd party publishers instantly forgot it existed. So it's no surprise that game starved switch owners bought indies.
