No studio tried to fill the hole left by missing GTA this gen is a lost occasion

...or not? GTA V on X1/ps4 has sold like gangbusters this gen too, but I guess if some devs had known that Rockstar would have not released a new GTA this gen (and who know how much time still missing to GTA VI), could have tried to capitalize on this.

Sure, not much studios have the money to make something even comparable to GTA V, but maybe something like a new Saints Row a bit less crazy than the last ones could have worked well.

RDR2 is a great game, but I miss all the crazy shit you can do in GTA open world.

well.. We are getting Cyberpunk 2077.. Not exactly the same but its the only studio that can make a game with the production value of a rockstar game and it does have a setting that hopefully many gta players wil like. Really curious to their multiplayer as well. maybe that can fill in for gta online

True, Sony should have kept Driver going... they give up on things too fast.

That'll probably be it, GTAV also released at the end of the gen if you think about it.

Isn't Driver from ubisoft? And i believe they abandoned it for The Crew and Watchdogs

watch dogs 2 is the best open world game this gen imo and the only thing keeping me from replaying it again (for the 4th time) is the constant crashes on pc, sadly they abandoned that game before all the bugs were sorted.

Hard to miss GTA when GTA was in the top best selling games every week for the entire console generation.

I just wanted a sequel to Sleeping Dogs. It's truly a shame that we never got one.
Came here to say exactly this.

Also came in to say this, really too bad we never got a sequel. Have been replaying the PS4 port and the game still stands up. Also much prefer the HK gangster/cop story to the over the top satire in the GTA series, and the hand to hand combat still looks so awesome in motion. Those environmental kills were so satisfying, like Wei smashing some thugs head in a car door.

Crackdown 3?

I liked this game :(

I think Sony or Microsoft 1st party are the only ones capable of developing an open world game with the detail and scale of a GTA game.
The only other title that comes to mind is Cyberpunk 2077, and that's going for density over pure scale.

It takes alot of Money to try and make a game like GTA that why not many game company try to do it cause if they fail they will burn so much of their money wile failing.

I'm not really seeing the loss of the disappearance of GTA in this gen , it's a good game and of course it's my absolute opinion ... but a game with the same shit every 7 years with a upgrade visuals isn't my choice and I can't see the quality in it . On the other hand , other games developed specially by 1st party studios are the ones I really feel empty when a sequel doesn't happen

The developers went under, unfortunately. I really liked Sleeping Dogs. It was a good story and Wei was a good lead character.

Square Enix owns the IP rights. It would be great if they could find a developer to produce a sequel.

Not to mention small combat systems that werent even mentioned I believe until you figured it out yourself.

Bullet time drivebys.
Bullet time when you slid over an object.
Being able to ram motherfuckers with your car (yes a button dedicated to putting all your cars force into one direction). I think when you hit bikes the game went into bullet time as well.

I love bullet time.

I could really go for a pork pun right about now ...

Cyberpunk is definitely that title as imsosleepy said and if CDPR plays their cards right they will get countless people to double dip when the buy the next gen version. I'm honestly thinking of waiting and experiencing Cyberpunk on next gen hardware if I can wait, but I probably won't be able to. Just thinking about the playing GTA5 on PS3 compared to PS4 makes me want to though.

Developing a game for 5 plus years is usually not something most devs have the freedom to do. Just the ability to switch characters on the fly was amazing on PS3 and 360 hardware. Maybe we haven't gotten a GTA5 clone this gen because, well, nobody else can produce a game with all the freedom and different gameplay elements like Rockstar without falling incredibly short.

In many genres we not getting games last years like racing, like horror, most studios now doing fps or 3rd person adventure/shooters. Noone doing fallout or skyrim like games too. I miss those.

Watch Dogs 2 was fantastic. Plus the co-op and online is some of the most fun I've had in years with any online game.

You're wrong in assuming there even is a hole for other games to fill. GTA V still has more active players than almost all games released this gen, and it's still selling like hotcakes. It's unstoppable, and you can't blame developers and publishers for choosing not to compete.

GTA 5 story played couple times roamed open worlds many hrs but we need morr more and more of that. Online part is another story , guess all meaning here was story campaigns. So yh we need lot more games. Like every half year for me plz. Not every 10 yrs damn that sucks.

Its a tall order to fill. There's definitely no shortage of open world games and just compare. Nothing comes close to the level of detail to R* games. They only outdo themselves like for example RDR 2 compared to GTA V.

WD is trash, Sleeping Dogs was average at best, Saints Row was a decent runner up with 1 and 2 then went bland.

i was thinking the same yesterday, no real scumbag thief simulator during this gen, the watch dogs games are weak and you are more of an hacker.
mafia 3 was weak too.

We got 3 GTA on ps2 and Xbox, 2 on ps3 and 360, and 1 last gen port on current gen consoles, I don't know what's going on but we haven't had a true current game GTA game this gen...

I haven't played Watch Dogs 2, but I've heard good things and it does make me curious.

I echo the sentiment for Sleeping Dogs 2, though (lots of "Dogs" in this thread...). It's really frustrating to think United Front was making an MMO no one asked for instead of just SD2. Apparently they wanted to make Triad Wars, but that was unfortunately the total opposite direction of where the fanbase wanted the series to go.

I'm sure this will sound weird, but... I actually wish an indie developer would take a crack at making a game that is much more like GTA2 or GTA3.

I enjoy modern GTA games, but I'm not into all the cut scenes and voice acting. I just like a fun sandbox world with crazy interactions and not a whole lot of moments that might make me cringe if my wife is around.

I'm in the same boat. I saw that its on sale for $7.49 on xbox marketplace. At that price, I may be tempted to try it out. For as much crap Ubisoft gets for their game design, I really do enjoy their games. I just finished AC Unity and absolutely loved it. Easily my fave in the series atm. I'm looking over reviews for WD2 and it looks really fun. And it takes place in San Fran, which is a location I've never played in a game before.

FYI, the deal ends in 5 days I think.

I still find it amazing Rockstar cancelled all the planned Single Player DLC and just rode out GTA Online for an entire generation. It's crazy to think about, they make more a year from GTAO than most other studios do putting out games.
