July 11th, 2005 (11:47am) - The Nintendo DS and Nintendo’s Revolution next generation game console will use Nintendo’s future Wi-Fi network to play with users across the globe wirelessly online. However, for those users who do not have a Wi-Fi set up at home, Nintendo plans to release an official accessory that will allows users without a wireless router to use their PCs to gain access to Nintendo’s Wi-Fi network.

A Nintendo representative told Aussie-Nintendo the following:

If you have a Nintendo DS, then you do have wireless. Nintendo has announced plans to make a PC-compatible wireless network adapter to work with the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. It will use a USB 2.0 connection.
While we don’t have any details yet, basically, instead of an accessory that will let you go non-wireless, this accessory will make your current internet connection compatible with Wi-Fi.

We are really looking forward to the online capabilities of the system! Although we don’t have any details yet, we have been assured that it will be very easy and affordable!

Because it plugs in your PC’s USB 2.0 connection, it seems as if your PC must be turned on in order to use this official accessory. Nevertheless, it should be a cheaper alternative to buying a wireless router to play future Nintendo DS and Revolution games online.

Cheaper? From Nintendo? Does not compute. :lol

it sounds to me like they refuse to put a fucking ethernet jack on the damn thing, so people who don't need wireless have to buy their $30 (or whatever) adapter

and i thought MS was being cheap with the wifi not built in... ETHERNET NOT BUILT IN? WTF!

meh. with the 360 you have to pay 50 bucks a year. with the revolution you pay 30 bucks.. once. . .

same thing. sorta.

Wireless routers have become so inexpensive that if you can afford a DS, you should be able to afford a wireless router.

Nintendo is still cheap for not including Ethernet. People also shouldn't have to go through the extra step of making sure their network is secure just because they want to play Rev online.

We're talking about the DS here. Why aren't people complaining about the lack of an ethernet port on the PSP?

And if you don't secure your network you deserve to have every leech stealing your bandwidth.

Wi-Fi is clearly going to be used for DS-Revolution connectivity, Wi-Fi serves a bigger advantage than Ethernet in this case.

We're talking about DS? The article states the adapter is for both Rev and DS, and I'm pretty sure the guy you quoted is talking about Rev. And PSP is a PORTABLE device, so it makes sense. Most people online gaming at home are doing so through standard Ethernet. Period.

Great, connectivity was so successful the first time around.

well, sony's going to be doing it with the ps3.

seriously, this isnt a big deal.. especially for those that have live or bought the modem for their ps2.

Egg on my face. I thought we were just talking DS. Not both. Whether Nintendo includes an ethernet jack on the Rev or not, I don't care since I have a wireless router already.

At least Sony corrected their mistake and built it in to the PStwo. I don't mind paying $50 a year for Live since the features are sure to be a lot more fleshed out than the other two Online services.

Nintendo is the only compnay not including Ethernet in their next home console. It just looks bad.

Well, he mentioned MS...

Eh, I think it's a good idea for those people who don't have wi fi. The "well they were cheap because they left out ethernet" is just BS. People complain about how bulky and uncomfortable the DS is now, imagine how bad it would be if you had an ethernet port in there. Besides, when I think portable, I think wi fi. Also, the fact that you can use it for the Rev is even better, stupid EGM gave them shit in their latest issue because they had no ethernet port. this fixes that problem. :P

I just hope that you'll be able to use this to send the DS demos, including the E3 demos that you can download from that site.

Ah, good point, this could open up some good stuff. If that's the case right there, I just might buy it for that reason.

As many as there are against it, this could open up a wave of stuff....and they'll end up selling a bunch. :lol

obviously, i can afford a wireless router... i just don't want or need one... i already have a wired 4 port router, a 4 port switch and a 8 port switch, and a nice and neat network of pc's and consoles with nice neat wires wrapped in those bag twists, running across walls, etc...

why should i have to spend $50 for them to save 50¢

Haha, it would be great to see it open up the homebrew scene for the DS

no one complained about the ps2 adapter when it first hit..

MS not supporting 56k modems on the xbox.. it just looks bad. wired = past, wireless = future ;)

i dunno. i like the fact that the only wire sticking out of the console will be the power cord.

I like it that they are going to not include a ethernet jack. cables ugh.

good point. i don't mind forking out extra money for wireless stuff anyhow. god ethernet looks ugly, especially when you have 50 feet of it. besides, wireless makes it so easy if you want to re arrange your stuff etc. out with wired

I've always been in favour of ditching old technologies early to force people to adopt the new shit. bonus for nintendo that it's going to save them a bunch of money I guess. It really seems like their small quiet console with fast startup is a big thing for them.

Nintendo has never said anything about any Ethernet port being available on the Rev. There was simply no ethernet port on the Revolution concept box at E3. And there were so many things lacking on that concept (I heard there wasn't even a real drive inside).

Any word on how I would be able to play Mario Kart/AC/Other DS games... with you guys? is there like a screen name or something?
