Defo. Becoming a very common sight here in England and the rest of Europe. From a mind-share point of view MS/Nokia's slow and steady approach is paying off. Would be interesting to know what the Marketplace spend per device per month looks like.

Yes, very.

On the one hand you'd expect it to be quite ok considering that you can't pirate apps, but on the other you'd think that the lower end phones will also generate less on the marketplace.

I have spent a mighty £1.49 so far on apps on WP8.

Still £1.49 than I ever spent on Android.

I think it's safe to assume a number higher than Android but lower than iPhone.

It remains to be seen if Microsoft can carry the Lumia brand and the Nokia legacy. Keeping Lumia but not Nokia is a big mistake, imo, as the Lumia brand doesn't really have any weight.

although I agree, most of the important US market associates Nokia as a dinosaur brand. I hear comments like "Nokia is still in business?" all the time when people ask about my 920.

You do know that their smartphone division includes 5.9 million Asha devices in addition to the 8.8 million Lumias?

Should be taken into account and makes these calculations and assumptions somewhat irrelevant.

edit: Asha was up to 5.9 from 4.3 compared to Q2, btw.

No it doesn't. The graph clearly says 8.8m devices shipped so it's Lumia ones only. Asha devices are included in Mobile phones.

The ASP of Lumia devices was €143 because the 520 makes up more than 50% of what was shipped in all likelihood. It is a very popular device.

I'm glad you mentioned this instead of me!

Yeah, it remains to be seen how popular Microsoft Lumia devices will be in Europe and Asia (where Nokia have made most of their gains).

On a more general note, the future of Lumia is interesting because we don't know if MS management will be willing to continue a negative margin strategy in order to gain market share like Nokia's management have (stupidly IMO now that they have agreed the sale). If they are then I can imagine shareholder angst over being involved in hardware to increase and more boardroom tussles over the future. If they (as I suspect) aren't interested in low and negative margin hardware then it poses a problem because the 520 and 620 are easily the most popular devices currently on sale for Nokia, neither of those carries the kinds of margins that Apple have and retreating to the high end space will be a tough sell for them, especially across Europe where without the Nokia branding they are going to struggle.

The other interesting part is that Nokia are, from what I can surmise of the information released about the sale, able to licence their vast imaging IP to other companies. PureView as a brand remains part of Nokia and is licenced non-exclusively to Microsoft as part of the deal as with all of their other IP. Nokia's new IP licencing arm could licence their imaging IP to other companies after 1/1/14 when the deal closes.

Oh, my apologies.
----
50 % is a bit much I'd think. There are other low end Lumias selling well too (620 for instance) and then 1020 came out in Q3. I doubt that the 520 alone made the sales in the US triple, considering it was already available the previous quarter.

Yes, but the US accounts for just 15% of volume and the ASP is very low for a smartphone only division.

Yay, go Nokia. I really like WP8 (even if I am rocking WP7.8 with Lumia 900, still better experience than most Android phones in similar price range)

More effort should be put on catching up with the competition in the app ecosystem. I love Android but I'd go back to WP if I didn't have to give up so many apps and games. My Lumia 800 was one of my best hardware purchases ever, fantastic phone.

Good news for Nokia. Hopefully this will mean more success for them. I have the Lumia 520 and its a solid phone. I'm even thinking of going with a higher end Nokia for my next phone. Well done.

Glad to see Lumia sales picking up, even if not here in the U.S. Super solid phones with a good OS that just needs some better support.

As bad as the software looked, I really liked the Nokia E7 at the time it came out.

Full aluminum body, good keyboard, good sliding mechanism. Great stuff.

Yeah, they looked nice.

I suspect they're a lot harder to sell these days, because smart phones are so much thinner now than a few years ago and having a slide out keyboard adds bulk that most people just don't want to have.

That and on-screen keyboards are a lot better now too (WP keyboard is good, Swype is excellent etc.), so it's not something that most people want anymore.

Nice. The 520 would be my choice if I had a good reason to replace my phone right now. Almost tempted to do so anyway since it's relatively cheap, but naw...

Yeah it's hard to beat. My brother grabbed one when it was £60 here and I'm pretty impressed by it for half the price of my 620.

How's the screen compared to 620, reviews made it seem 620 was a lot better in that regard? I got the 920 tank (for 1 euro on a 2 year contract!), but I got the 620 for my mom over 520, since it was 4 euros a months vs 3 euros a month for 2 years. Carrier was phasing out the 620 in favor of 520.

Screen on the 520 is fine in isolation but when next to the 620 it's no contest. The Clear Black filter on the 620 makes a world of difference.

Oh cool. And yeah 520 is so cheap it's tempting to have one in the drawer as a spare. The Windows Phone UI is silky smooth on that config, what I really love are the free HERE maps that work offline so I don't really need a data plan. They limited 520's car nav to 1 country only (upgradable for like a good 10 euros) but for most people that shouldn't be a problem.

I get the feeling these days most people just blindly buy Samsung though.
