The way the nominations is weird though. Her will definitely not win the best picture, but because it's fanbase seems so passionate about it, it'll probably pick up a few number one positions on ballots.
It's far better to get a fair few first places than it is to get a million fifth places, because of the way the voting works. Inside Llewyn David will probably be the same.
There's no way Iron Man 3 would get nominated before Ron Howard's Rush.
Pretty much agree with all of the above. Her didn't do much for me but I can see why it's considered a great one. While American Hustle deserves some acting nominations, I don't think the movie as a whole even deserves one of those ten spots for best picture nomination, never mind a win.
I really hope they put multiple "indies" up there because there's plenty of room after those 4-5 movies that are winner contenders. Short Term 12 will never show on that list but I really think it deserves a nomination. Maybe something like Fruitvale Station too, but zero chance there.
That seems like quite a long shot. Neither she nor the film has seen nominations, let alone wins, with the other major awards.
I know, and it's a damn shame.
I was just talking about this with a friend earlier. For the most part it's pretty entertaining in the moment, but without any strong unifying themes or ideas, there's nothing to make it stick in the mind.
This is, sadly, par for the course with Best Picture nominees.

So odd watching on YouTube and some announcer going "THREE MINUTES TO AIR. THREE MINUTES." It's like when you watch basketball games on the internal feed and you can hear the announcers chit chatting during commercial breaks.

It wasn't a bad movie and had some outstanding performances. But I felt like it just didn't have that excitement or humor or "it" that something like Goodfellas or the movies it was similar to had.

I keep seeing comparisons to Goodfellas, but to me, it was more akin to a Coen Brothers black comedy than a Scorsese film.

I haven't seen too many of the award season darlings but of those I've seen I would say these deserve nominations:
Gravity:
Best Director for Alfonso Cuaron. It would be a crime if he were not nominated.
Best Visual Effects: It has to be a lock to win this, right?
Dallas Buyers Club:
Best Actor for Matthew McConaughey. Unforgettable performance, even beyond the weight loss thing. I think he deserves to win.
Best Supporting Actor for Jared Leto. I think he maybe deserves a nomination though maybe not a win.
Nebraska. The accolades are strong for this one:

Best Director for Alexander Payne. He's been nominated twice for this award but hasn't previously won. IMO this is his best work thus far as a director and I think he has a shot to win.

Best Actor for Bruce Dern: He won at cannes and I think he deserves to be nominated at least, though maybe we won't win in this year's crowded field.

I thought Jennifer Lawrence was fantastic in American Hustle, but it's unfortunate that Adams' performance is getting overshadowed by Lawrence's.
Adams was the star of that film, IMO. I think the brilliance of her performance is proven by the astounding number of "Amy Adams' accent was so bad!" posts in the American Hustle thread.

American Hustle was the same as the Fighter and silver linings play book: great acting in just a pretty good film.
Before Sunrise.
It was basically the full retard version of Oscar bait. You can't try too hard to win awards.
Pleasantly surprised Hans Zimmer wasn't. Otherwise, not a great group of candidates. Williams would probably get it if the film didn't suck.
