I'm starting to smell the smoke here in Reno, NV. 😭

My friends and family in Rohnert Park all checked in as OK. 😌

Regarding air quality:

http://www.sfgate.com/news/article/Air-quality-California-San-Francisco-Bay-Area-fire-12270727.php

The smoky conditions around the Bay are forecast to worsen Thursday, Friday and Saturday as the winds kick up Wednesday night blowing the smoke south. The winds are expected to mellow Thursday and Friday, and the smoke will likely settle.

"This Friday and Saturday could be difficult in terms of air quality," says Tom Flannigan, the public information officer for the Bay Area Air Quality Management District.

With a flurry of raging infernos to the north, the Bay Area has been choking on wood smoke since Monday after fires broke out Sunday night as high winds spread flames.

"We're seeing the worst air quality ever recorded in many parts of the Bay Area," Flannigan told SFGATE on Tuesday. "The entire Bay Area population is likely being affected by the smoke."

The worst conditions were recorded near the heart of the Wine Country wildfires in the North Bay, where air quality reached hazardous levels Monday and again Tuesday morning. This means the amount of particulate matter in the air is at its highest.

"Up in the Napa area and even up in San Rafael, basically all of the North Bay, is experiencing the highest readings we've ever observed," Flannigan says.

The air quality can change dramatically by the hour and he says to go to AirNow.gov for the most up to date readings.

"We're back to that line that air quality is expected to be variable and changing as we continue to have light and changing winds," Flannigan says. "We're going to continue to monitor it and tell people to reduce smoke exposure by moving indoors."

I stepped outside and the wind is blowing in a lot more smoke around the bay. I don't even want to go outside. Time to keep the windows shut until it completely clears up.

this is so fucking horrible. Ugh. Wonder how long it will take to end? weeks?

I'm pretty sure my moms house won't last the day. It is/was in sonoma, and the last update she heard was that the fire was less than a mile away and evacuations were called for her street. Thank fuck she was on vacation.

Just got awful news about my friend. Her mom didn’t make it. They found her remains, in sorry to say. I feel crushed. How awful.

Oh man, I am so sorry.
I wish I could say more or help in some way. At least you can be there for her. Such awful news.

I was at an animal shelter a couple of days ago and a guy came in because he lost everything and had to surrender his dog because he can't get any temporary housing that'll let him keep it because of size/breed. I watched it being evaluated and it was really nice and well behaved. I checked and it's still not available so hopefully they're going to hold it for awhile in case the guy can get someone to look after it while he tries to pick up his life. I didn't get the full story of what's going on but what I did see was heartbreaking.

This is a very low-priority question in light of what's going on, but:

I'm in Oakland, and I'm wondering—how stupid would it be to practice martial arts today? The gym I work out at always has a door cracked for circulation.

I have a friend in the area there and she's evacuated. Most recent word is their home may be engulfed soon.

Really hoping it doesn't. God, my heart breaks for her and everyone else.

Honestly thought there was a fire in Santa Clara or something
Until strangers told me it blew down from napa, when they saw me taking a picture

I can still smell it now

Smells bad here in the city.

I'm going to need a mask.

It's bad all over. I hear my co-workers coughing a lot today :/

Instead of getting a mask, I'll just avoid going outside until this all blows over (for real).

My uncle's family finally convinced him to evacuate. He and his wife are currently at my cousin's house. His house is still okay, but I don't know how long it will stay that way. Hopefully it will be okay - he doesn't have insurance on it.

Yeah we’re really seriously keeping our hopes for Sonoma. Just crazy.
Just...crazy.

Ugh, increasing tensions even here in Rohnert Park. I have a few Uncle's that work for the CIty of Petaluma, and they are heading home to RP (G and H Sections) to pack up so they are ready to leave if needed. I'm next door in E section, so I'm expecting to have to move if anything happens. Then I've got family in Windsor, some of whom are extremely close to the Shiloh area, and I believe they are probably next on the evacuation orders too.

I’m in C section. Let me know if you need any help with anything.

Unrelated, but that 747 supertanker they brought over was awesome. For anyone unaware, it’s the largest aircraft supertanker in the world. It can hold 19,200 gallons and refill it all within 30m, flying at over 600mph full. It has to refill fuel/retardant in Sacramento, though.

My friend and his family live near Roberts Road and it was cool to hear her saying a helicopter was scooping out of a pool to get water quick.

So this fire is now put out, but apparently someone might have started a fire near a Costco by Vallejo.

I hope this was some weird accident but if this wasn't... SMH.

Some are being scumbags for sure. Arrests for looting have already happened. We’ve had people attempt to start fires in Santa Rosa, too, all while wearing masks. I really don’t understand why people do things. Saying this irrationally, but they should be hung!

Updates. Geyserville and downtown Sonoma is being told to evacuate, and downtown Napa is being warned to prep for possible evacuation:

http://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/article/Live-updates-23-dead-in-Wine-Country-fires-12271728.php

6:15 p.m. Mandatory evacuations in Geyserville: The Sonoma County Sheriff's Office issued mandatory evacuations in Geyserville, on Highway 128 east to River Rock Casino and south to Geysers Road up to Cal Pine.

7:25 p.m. Napa residents told to prepare: The Napa County Sheriff's Office is telling residents in some parts of Napa to prepare to evacuate, although no mandatory order has been issued. These areas have been warned: east of Silverado Trail between Trancas Street and Soscol Avenue, east of Soscol Avenue between Siverado Trail and West Imola Avenue, east of Highway 221 between West Imola Avenue and Highway 29, east of Highway 29 between Highway 221 and Jameson Canyon Road, and north of Jameson Canyon Road between Highway 12 and the Napa-Solano County line.

8:32 p.m. Mandatory evacuation ordered parts of eastern Sonoma Valley: Sonoma County Sheriff's Office issued a mandatory evacuation order for Seventh Street East and Castle Road, both north of Lovall Valley Road. The evacuation area is about one mile from historic Sonoma Square and Mission San Francisco Solano, the last of the California Missions.

That Napa area warning is starting to get awfully close to American Canyon and Vallejo.

First time I’ve experienced something like this, and getting used to the constant smoke smell is irritating. Thankfully, nothing bad has happened to me compared to what people have had to endure, though my family and I are ready to evacuate if needed.

This is fucking awful. Please stay safe guys. So much smoke this afternoon on 280 that you couldn't even see the hills off the high way. It was crazy.

Not sure if it's related to this, but I've never seen the sun have this weird orange glow to it here in San Francisco around mid-day.

there was fog/clouds, but the sun behind it had a huge orange glow. Wish made the lighting area in Civic Center look like it was during sunset.

I took a pic... will see if I'll upload it later.

Yeah, I saw the sun look that way too from East Bay. It reminded me of Apocalypse Now

Current fire map, one of the main worries right now is that some of these fires are going to merge:

Boy that music sure makes it seem like some ending to a movie. :/

Although I've had a stuffed nose for most of the week, I'm just now smelling the smoke here in SF. I got close to my window (that I usually leave open) and was like WTF? I heard it's going to get worse these next fw days right? Gonna wear a mask for sure tomorrow.

Morning updates:

http://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/article/Live-updates-23-dead-in-Wine-Country-fires-12271728.php

6:45 a.m. Deadliest of the Northern California wildfires 10 percent contained: The Tubbs Fire, which has burned though more than 27,000 acres between Calistoga and Santa Rosa, was 10 percent contained Thursday morning, according to Cal Fire officials.

7:45 a.m. No evacuation orders for Petaluma, but police tell residents to prepare: As fast-moving wildfires burn through Sonoma County, police are asking residents in Petaluma to get ready for possible evacuations, but knocked down rumors that evacuations were already in place there. No recommended, voluntary or mandatory evacuations have been ordered, Petaluma Police Department announced Thursday morning.

“Contrary to recent media reports, the City of Petaluma is recommending that all its citizens take prudent precautionary measures (for example packing a “go bag”) and develop personal contingency plans in the event evacuation becomes recommended or necessary,” the police department said in a statement.

Schools are cancelling outdoor activities throughout the Bay area.

Air quality is really bad. Down in the south I smelled it outside my house and I'm currently on the train going into SF. My eyes are burning and my nose is runny.

Stay safe North Bay GAF and Bay Area GAF.
