what part of NK is communist? The part where they share the hunger and misery with all people as equals? because apart from that, I don't think there is even a slim part of communism in there at all.

Doesn't that have to do with government controlled and operated forms of distribution? IE, only radio is government radio, etc...

really interesting the part about the fact that the japanese helped the korean start their nationalism by actually encouraging the koreans to feel proud of their pure race and the fact that the koreans just like the japanese both belonged to a superior race. Also, Myers claims that even though the japanese ruled brutally, it actually went down better than most Koreans wants to admit today.

These nationalist ideals put onto Koreans by the Japanese was never getting rid of in North Korea. Instead, these Japanese-collaborators got free hands to do whatever they felt like ideologically in North Korea, there were no "de-nazification" like in S.Korea. This meant, that North Korea already from the start was poisoned by all these "we are the best race" thinking put on by the pro-Japanese korean nationalist working together with Il Sung.

N.Koreans sees that they (koreans) are morally better than any other race. Therefore they have been used by un-pure races outside Korea. They therefore see themselves as so morally good and innocent that they need a protecting father! (Kim Il Sung!) Since they are born pure they should remain pure!

Kim/Party= Mother and Protector

Kim Jong Il is refereed to as a mother personality not as a hard ass general. Kim Jong Il is the nice mother that worries wether or not the soldiers have enough to eat. He is not the uber masculine father but a very nice mother who is nice to rest your head on. Therefore, all the propaganda feels so wrong for us because he is not supposed to look like a masculine leader but a nice parent.

Hopefully that's true. Maybe when Kim Jong Il is gone we can get China (lol) to help us put some diplomatic pressure on the new regime to implement some reforms/be a little more open.

I know it's optimistic thinking, but that's really the only way I can see North Korea improving at all unless we invade them or something (which would result in Seoul getting bombed).

The meaning of North Korea is their military superiority. Thats it. Theres no way North Korea will cut off the meaning of their existence. North Korea nows their economy sucks ass, they know everything sucks ass, but they see themselves as the last defender of the korean race. They see themselves as David vs. Goliat. There is no way, they will trade their military against like 20 % better life for their citizens. If North Korea are not portrayed to the north koreans as David ready to fight there is no way for North Korea to exist.

Just watched the Vice Guide to Travel documentary on North Korea on Netflix. I've seen other video from NK, but it still seems so unbelievable. Anyways, at one point they complain that they keep getting fed all of these lavish faux-spontaneous meals, which I found interesting in the context of this thread.
