North Korea says supreme leader Kim Jong Il has died

Do people seriously find it funny to feign support and allegiance to this asshole? I find it in pretty bad taste really.

We joke around a lot about Kim Jong Il, but I'd still like to point to just some of the crazy shit that went on in his country... Not just like the zany things like forcing everybody to have a radio playing NK propaganda all day, but like, gas chambers, torturing babies, and, of course, 20 years of man made famine.
It is not really Best Korea when you think about it.

Obama ramped up the war in Afghanistan and the only reason we got out of Iraq is because he had no other choice.

The ramp up in Afghanistan is an acceleration of the original plan for withdrawal. It was always increase troops then draw down and pull out.

And no, I'm pretty sure if McCain had won we'd still be in Iraq. Sorry.

.. but since I wasn't actually crediting Obama for this, I'll just let you carry on over there.

So any idea what's going to be the political situation in North Korea now? I remember hearing a few months ago that due to Kim Jong Il's failing health, there were rumors of a potential power vacuum with the military taking over the country rather than his sons.

I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing. This might have also been related to rumors that even the military was having a hard time giving its soldiers rations so they were getting tired of the current regime.

It's kind of sobering that the media spends all this time talking about terrorism/Iran and yet a conflict like this could be brewing in a nuclear armed country.

Interesting how I get the most details about this news --and a lot of other info-- here on GAF. But I really hope things will get better after this and not worse.

Huh, I pretty much viewed his like Fidel Castro, in the sense that he wasn't going to die anytime in the near future.

So, what's in the future for N. Korea?

So he still ramped it up like the past presidents that you listed and what the hell does McCain have to do with anything?

CNN.com, for once, has actually reported a breaking news story within a half hour of it breaking on the AP.

Congrats, CNN, for catching up with everyone...

Hitchens will get a shock as he lines up at Heaven's gates to see the Dear Leader materialise into view.

...that's funny considering neither of them believed in an afterlife, right?

There's been a million rumors about Chavez's health these last couple of months so I expect him to live like 100 years.

He will lose next years elections though :) So I'm not sure why he's being grouped with those other guys.

I know we had nothing to do with it, but still amusing how more dictators have fallen/died under Obama's policy of winding down the wars than under Reagan/Bush/Bush Jr's ideas of ramping things up, combined.

.

It's obviously stupid to credit anyone for most of these, but Fidel Castro resigned with Bush in office, and there was Saddam too. So wouldn't the scoreboard just be 2 to 2 anyways?

I see four possible outcomes:

1. His son takes over and things stay mostly the same in North Korea.
2. His son can't keep the generals in line and they get rid of him. Things continue as they were, but without one true figurehead.
3. His son can't keep power and the nation collapses under a coup attempt or unraveling of some sort. This could be very messy.
4. North Korea begins a slow process of opening up to the world, ala Burma/Myanmar.

If his 20-something son becomes the leader you can expect a revolutionizing change before he is no longer the ruler there. Should be very interesting.

ummm I could be wrong, but with him dead does this mean his equally fucked up son is now in charge. In fact last I heard his son was even worse then his dad.

It likely will not get any better in North Korea. Kim Jung Il was an autocrat, but he has not been as politically active in 5 years. The problem, of course, is that North Korea is as near to a black hole as there can be.

THe theory of his sons becoming his predecessors, though, has always been spurious. One of them spent significant time in Europe and is considered tainted by Western ideology, and the other had the closest thing to a national scandal within the last few years -- I don't know the details of either, but I remember reading about it a couple years ago.

I really really want to see the hilarious funeral videos. It will definitely be hilarious, if anyone has watched the videos of the Kim Il Sung Funeral, they'l know what i'm talking about. The crying commentators, the crying crowd, people shouting how they loved their dear leader, the mythical stories involving birds, i can't wait for it!

How long until the rest of the kingdom collapses?

That's been speculated to happen after death for some time by Chinese, Korean and American experts (and governments), no?
