Notorious GAF members who are no longer here? What happened?

Man, it took til this page for deadmeat to finally be mentioned. No mention of COCKLES, Saphirix/mina, Saturnman, Matlock, or Morphix either.

Man, I feel old.

I love feeling old. :D

I liked Manos. When he wasn't trying to incite a riot around here, I thought he was capable of bringing about some well thought out counter arguments that brought some good discussion.

I actually liked that guy too.

Oddly enough I also miss reading JayDubya's posts. Though I disagreed with him on basically everything he was very consistent and knowledgable with what he latched on to.

Also, the most graceful and quiet exit was probably SegataSanshiro.

I'd say that belongs to Bertram Cooper. In a thread about coming back to GAF after a ban he simply said "I'm not going to wait for my next ban to leave I'm just going to do that now. "

Or something to that effect. He hasn't posted since. I kinda admire that a bit. I like to think I would be able to drop the mic and walk away like that but I couldn't do it. GAF in many ways is my social outlet. I would be way too isolated without you guys and gals. Respect for Bertram though.

What's with all the ":lol"? I'm guessing GAF supported emoticons once but surely they weren't that prevalent?

They were. That's why they were banned. EvilLore specifically said he was sick of threads where something funny was posted and then 90% of the reactions were ":lol :lol :lol :lol :lol"

I'm still sporting my MAF (and Christmas x2) inspired avatar.
It's strange seeing all of these names. I recognize pretty much all of them lol.
God, I've been here forever (and regret nothing!).

I think it was more the condescending :lol's used as lazy counterarguments. It was kinda annoying, TBH. People still do it anyways but at least not as often.

What happened to RobertSan, the self-obsessed Eurotrash dude that was both adored and hated for posting pictures of himself hanging out with hot Sweedish blondes?

It's kinda funny how something like this I would just pass over like so much garbage if it was a YouTube comment or blog comment. But to see such an outburst in the tightly moderated and restrained NeoGAF environment nearly has me in tears as I laugh. That's the power of a non-sequitor -- context is underrated when it comes to comedy.

I lurked when a lot of the more passionate members of sony-GAF got culled in NPD threads.

I specifically remember Wollan and kittonwy but I'm sure there were others. I wish I could remember who got the Cobra Commander avatar.

I was going to post the same thing.

i had a better idea.. i kick your wife in the back of the legs and fuck her bareback doggy style, just as i am about to nut i whip out nintendoggy 2 and using the dsi i record me covering her mouth and busting up her nostrils as she fingers my taint. bitch.

Nothing will ever top that for most random and insane ban.

Oh, Derrick01. That guy knew how to kill threads fast. Really couldn't stand how he threw a wet blanket on things and then a few other posters would inevitably start quoting it, agreeing with him with one-word replies like "this," further disabling any meaningful discussion.

Anyone remember Atramental? The kid who was in a Christian skool who always posted about how depressed he was. I remember he set some goals and turned his life around in a few months. Was fucking mad chicks.

And who was da dude teaching in China. Some fat white guy and was fucking all his 13 year old students.

Wut

He hates video games, he's never content. Jeez it must suck hard to be him.

I miss crushed the most. Now, someone please let me in on the secret.

RiskyChris was amazing.

I wonder what happened to him. Did he finally purchase a suit of armor off of eBay?

He posted elsewhere (FOH) in a manner quite similar to here. He seemingly stopped after a while so who knows. But for a while he just kept on keepin on.

He is still doing his thing.
Very few people like him are not fueled by hate and or ignorance. You can look for his post-neogaf career where he showed a bit of his true character vs. the veil of reason he pulled here.

Yeah, there was no reason there. There are entire subreddits dedicated to that kind of person and the inflexible inanity that is his specific brand of politics.

I liked Manos. When he wasn't trying to incite a riot around here, I thought he was capable of bringing about some well thought out counter arguments that brought some good discussion.

He was mostly fine so long as you could keep him off the topic of guns. Which took him from a relatively level headed like able guy to just insane logical gymnastics that only a junior had the patience to actually deal with.

The Derrick quote I was looking for was where he said Tomb Raider sucked because it was too easy, and he subsequently claimed that he made it through the entire game in hard mode and only died 3-4 times. That seemed a little ridiculous because even in the easy modes you'll still end up occasionally dying to a stray grenade or an enemy's bullet that happens to hit an explosive barrel sitting right behind you.

I thought derrick was fine he usually had good points to make regardless if others feel that they were justified or not at least he always made his stance and reasons clear.

I'm on my last leg here. Next ban will be a perm.
I wonder, what stupid shit will I say to do me in?
I dont have much self-control, heh.

Speaking of splinter forums, I was actually part of one once.

But it wasn't for banned members, basically it was a "cool kids club" off-shoot of an anime forum for people who were tired of some of the more, er, anime-y posters. On the other hand, the splinter forum was sort of juvenile in the sense that everyone tried to be really edgy throwing around slurs and such. At first it was sort of "we're ironic!", but then it just got really weird and critical of anyone who didn't fit with the in-group.

I was never the one to really partake in the more cruder discussions, so I sort of got annoyed by that, and ended up sort of becoming a joke among the other members there for being too preachy. Eventually I ended up becoming sort of a joke poster (not that I joked, more that no one took me seriously and derailed every thread I posted end) and just ended up getting banned because I was "too whiny". Not sure what happened to that forum, but I actually felt like I was being cyberbullied for once.

Basically I don't think anything good can come of splinter forums. They always end up having the opposite problem of the forum they spring from.

Who was the user who pretended to be Japanese but turned out to be a white kid?

Edit: So it was Gaming Age? I thought it was something more recent. Must be thinking of another user.

Lol Being relatively new, I never realized how much delicious drama was going on in gaf.

The strangest thing that I've learned from this thread is that spin off forums of GAF exist full of the unwanted. I may have stumbled across one when searching and yeah.. very 4chan.

Kitsune.

I found his "goodbye" post as well:

Alright, I'm sick and tired of this.

But this isn't for you, not any of the gossipy muckety muck gutter****ing cock jockeys who can't mind their own business and thrive on people's controversies when they've done nothing to deserve them.

Whoever brought this out, I'll let you have your satisfaction: whatever you tried to do, you succeeded royally at messing up my real life. Go ahead and smile or whatever it is inhuman jackasses like you do. It won't change the fact that I know exactly who I am and I don't really care if anyone else doubts it. It matters not one bit when nothing changes for the reality of me: one Japanese guy living in Japan.

That's the last thing I have to say the GA Forum.

-----

But this.

This is for you.

I know you're reading this. I also know you can understand this. I still don't know how you got all this information, but I'll find out. I admit I don't know how someone could be so damn screwy in the head to go through all the effort you've gone through, especially over me.

But that doesn't change the fact that on top of that, I know who you are now. Yeah, go ahead and shake your head like I'm bluffing. You know in the depths of your nasty, mean little heart that I'm telling the truth.

You'll find out soon enough what the consequences are for doing what you've done to me over the past year and a half.

There's going to be no more fear, and no more harassment, at least not on my side. I'm going to live normally again no matter what you do.

I'd just like to let you know that's nothing changed in the last ten years. Oh yes. I've grown up and gone to live in the US and come back here and all that, but I'm still just as violent and cruel as you remember. If anything, I've only gotten stronger.

If you do one more thing to me...know this: no one will be able to hear you scream. And I won't make it quick.

And if you think you can use this for evidence, well you know now that what used to be your strength is now your weakness: no one will be able to track it to the real me.

Pretty sure all the person did to find out was check his IP address and discover it was from Cali.

The strangest part is looking around OT topics over the past year or so and seeing people I used to not see at all, even though they're older members. The inherent problem with posters like some of the old "big names"-since-banned is that they seemed to make an effort to turn every thread into their own. Just the same group of people playing up a character and lobbying banter that was only thinly veiled as an actual discussion; the only thing that would change from thread to thread was the context. It just stifled actual discussion and turned the entire environment into one where you had to be part of the "in-group" to have any sort of success in garnering any attention to your posts - especially considering that the current policy over "thread-whining" wasn't in effect and you could be entirely dismissed for daring to start a conversation outside of their bubble.

[...] was sort of juvenile in the sense that everyone tried to be really edgy throwing around slurs and such. At first it was sort of "we're ironic!", but then it just got really weird and critical of anyone who didn't fit with the in-group.

You've basically described 4chan.
