Nintendo has responded to the latest NPD report. While commenting on 3DS’ performance, the company confirmed sales for both New Super Mario Bros. 2 and Kingdom Hearts 3D.

Take a look at the press release below for that information and more.

Nintendo PR said:
New Super Mario Bros. 2 Emerges as the Best-Selling Video Game of August

Even with only five days of reported data, Nintendo 3DS XL and New Super Mario Bros. 2 still had major impacts on the August video game market. The new hardware, which features 90 percent larger screens than the original Nintendo 3DS, and the new side-scrolling Mario adventure both launched on Aug. 19 and helped Nintendo achieve the following:

  • Nintendo 3DS software sales increased by more than 68 percent over sales in July.
  • Nintendo 3DS hardware sales increased by more than 36 percent over sales in July.
  • The No. 1 and No. 2 top-selling software SKUs for the month are both exclusive to Nintendo 3DS. New Super Mario Bros. 2 sold more than 240,000 units to finish No. 1, and KINGDOM HEARTS 3D [Dream Drop Distance] from Square Enix sold more than 180,000 copies to finish No. 2.

“Software sells hardware, and no one sells either quite like Mario,” said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “In addition to helping New Super Mario Bros. 2 get off to a great start, Nintendo 3DS XL is driving increased interest in titles such as Kid Icarus: Uprising, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D and Mario Kart 7. These games have been on the market for more than six months but provide a completely new experience on the larger screens. Combine these titles with the upcoming Paper Mario: Sticker Star and a robust list of third-party games, and Nintendo 3DS is poised to be high on holiday wish lists this year.”

So much for the 3DS being a healthier and more optimistic platform for KH. In retrospect they really should have stopped everything after BbS and just made KH3 on consoles immediately.

Oh man, 3DS software situation in the US is worse than I thought. KH3D lower than BBS is flat out embarrassing.

I know some casual KH fans that are sick of all these 'spinoffs', and yes I know DDD isn't a spinoff.

Square really fucked up by not releasing the actual KH3 by now.

It's a device aimed squarely at children. Children break, lose things. I'm also surprised at how aware of the difference between Nintendo's policies and Apple's policies that kids are. My nephews and nieces have no interest at all in Nintendo because they can't share their purchases with their brothers and sisters. I applaud them for being educated on the differences. My own daughter likes using my XL, but given the choice for herself, she chose a Touch. I can't fault her.

It's not aimed at children... it's aimed at everyone. Nintendo even warns that 3DS' 3D isn't appropriate for children under 7.

Nobody in their right mind would allow gamesharing a full retail game. Sony tried it as a good-faith measure and they quickly regretted it. Sharing free and $1 games? Of course.

Put a fork in it, Kingdom Hearts is done.

That would have been possible if SE had their shit together at the beginning of this generation like Capcom.

Yep, as I said earlier, KH fans are fatigued with portable spinoffs now. They don't care that this is the KH2.5 game, they just want 3 on a console.

This has got to be extremely embarrassing for Square Enix.

Yep. They've watered the series down to the breaking point.

358/2 Days, the worst KH game of all time, sold about a million in the US iirc. So that's really a good indication of how much the series has fallen off a cliff.

It's aimed squarely at children. As it should be. Are you saying 7+ year olds aren't children?

Wow at the Nintendo PR. Didn't mention XL/3DS sales. Must not be good.

I really don't think people wanted another KH on handhelds after so many in a row on handhelds. On top of that DDD only looks marginally better than BBS, so that may have affected it as well. They either need to bring out one on consoles or at least on Vita, if Vita would actually get a userbase.

For an even broader perspective, KH 1 (over 3m) outsold FFX in the US and KH2 (2.4m) got pretty damn close to it.

I can see my chances of playing Bravely Default going down the drain with those Kingdom Hearts numbers

Time to buy an iPad and wait for the iOS port I suppose

Is that increase good?

Nothing about the Wii to make calculations...

EDIT: Someone did the 3DS calculations.... so, not good. Not good at all.

Clearly every KH game from now on needs Roxas and tons of sea-salt ice-cream!

358/2 sold around 370k in 33 days.

Honestly, at this point I have to wonder about how much damage the brand has suffered overall. Even a KH3 at this point is going to sell far, far less than KH2. Too little, too late.

That is probably true. KH3 would have to not only really impress, but S-E would need to do a HUGE marketing blitz to get it close to KH2.

You are correct though, the series is beyond the peak. I want to believe otherwise, but I wouldn't be surprised if the series actually is killed off after 3. :(

Nintendo launches new 3ds hardware, their most impactful handheld franchise outside of Pokemon, and another game from a strong IP and this is result. Really bad news for the platform.

The hardware situation ain't so hot, either. Especially if that includes 3DS XL numbers.
Thank goodness for Japan.

For the short-term future of the series they really need to get out a HD collection and also port the handheld titles.

PS3-360-Wii-U

Nomura hinted at this earlier in the year. Hope to god we get an announcement at TGS.

Really not surprised by Kingdom Hearts 3D sales. The more handheld iterations Square creates, the further it separates the franchise from its glory-selling console days. People will come back for Kingdom Hearts 3, and I think this is what it will take for Square to realise that.
