NPD December 2012 Sales Results [Up2: Xbox 360, All Nintendo Hardware, NSMB Wii U]

No, apparently the Wii set the benchmark. Every Nintendo system that doesn't sell as we'll as it did is dead.

Wii U pulled decent, but far from great numbers.

Consoles typically double sales from Nov to Dec, 1:1 with no shortages is not decent and is a bad sign for Q1 and 2 of 2013

Panic Mode Nintendo does not exist. Besides the price drop, everything Nintendo did with the 3DS was going to happen anyway. I mean how the hell was 3D Land and MK7 panic mode when those were pushed to come out in 2011 before we even knew 3DS sales.

MK was rushed or at least lacking in the DS mission mode. They know sales a lot earlier than we do because the retailers are buying them (or not), and the shipments were lower than expected in its first Q. But not real proof that was a panic move, might just have been behind on it.

So are we thinking around 600K or so for the PS3? Since the Wii sould about 450k and the Wii U sold 460k they can't be second place or MS pr would have said tripled, not doubled. And since the 360 more than doubled the 2nd place console, that puts the PS3 lower than 700K

Yeah I see them releasing the pokemon news etc. so early as an attempt to get people to buy early instead of waiting until pokemon is out. Assure them its indeed coming soon and maybe they will bite early and sample what's out now

I wish they'd do this for whatever they've got cooking on Wii U! :(

I mean yeah it was bad how 3DS announced with tons of titles that wear years away from release, but at least we knew something was coming.

MS must feel they are in a good position to carry over this momentum to the nextbox. xbox live players are not going anywhere else in 2014!

I'd hate to think with all this momentum they decide to make a more powerful machine than Sony at a similar price point? They can afford the losses more to risk gaining more marketshare in the end, yet ppl in the other thread expect/want parity between next gen consoles smh.

Maybe you should reevaluate what is good/bad for handhelds differently, now that tablets and phones are pulling more and more people away from console/handheld gaming.
This is something we should all keep in mind.

My question is: Is it healthy for the Vita to have sold in eleven months the same as the Gamecube did in its first two months? With inflation considered they were both selling at $250.

I'm surprised Wii U did sub 500k for December. I guess Christmas shoppers were turned off by the high price tag in comparison to the competition. :(

It's between 600 - 650k, so we're just going with 625k.

Second month without Sony PR I see.

More like second full year ...

73% attach rate for NSMBU with Wii U buyers in Dec... that's alarmingly high

I guess all consoles are in trouble too then since 360 did 1.26 mil in Nov and "only" 1.4 mil in Dec/PS3 did 600-700K in both Nov and Dec.

The only system that shows the 2x jump from Nov to Dec is 3DS.

Nintendo had this coming. Spending the past 6 years catering to an audience that jumps on fads and has no loyalty lol.

I'm sure the 40 millions Wii owners in US have no brand loyalty.

Wouldn't be surprised if the 360 was substantially cheaper than PS4, on contract of course

They sold a trillion units of Wii, and that's "successful", and as far as I'm concerned it was completely the wrong direction I want out of Nintendo as a gamer and it had the least games of any successful console that were interesting. I only care about games, I don't give half a shit about sales, so you won't find me caring whether or not they are not in the red - you'll only find me caring what the poor performance will do for Nintendo as a company who develops games. And for me, when Nintendo is behind is when they do their best work. That is why I hope that occurs, because I feel like Nintendo will begin to focus on the people who put them their in the first place.

I'll second this opinion. I'm pretty excited to see Nintendo's wake up call and efforts over the next few years. The last three years have been pretty abysmal for a Nintendo fan (or, well....good rather than great).

I think they want power-parity so that third parties don't struggle. A huge gap between Xbox and PS probably won't help them.

The PS3 didn't break 1 million any month in 2012 did it? When is the last time it did? I'm a little surprised its doing so poorly, or maybe the 360 has it the saturation point with the average american that if your're going to console for the fuck of it, 360 is the way to go.

No compelling exclusives probably didn't help either.

Dec 09 and Dec 10 are the only times PS3 has gone over 1 mill in US.

Really? I swear I remember seeing stuff from them within the past few months.

Yeah they gave out some BF PR, but typical month to month press releases have been rubbish from Sony for a long long time, certainly void of numbers. Just mutterings of 'momentum'

This is the only year Nintendo will have technical parity, assuming MS launches later this year as many are presuming. I have to imagine that unless something really strange happens, the WiiU will ultimately fare even more poorly than the GC did in it's day.

Maybe, but it's not all about power. The Wii is proof of that.

when did we first start hearing about MH4?

At Nintendo's pre TGS conference, basically when we would expect big announcements. Monster Hunter 4 and Tri G were both decided on for the 3DS before the 3DS even came out. At best we can say Nintendo fast tracked Mario Kart 7 for release in 2011. Otherwise you are assuming that Nintendo was going to have the 3DS have a holiday with 0 games.

Can you give hints to JD4's performance to help gauge the sales of everything under it, if you don't mind?

Happy to see Scribblenauts holding up

Obviously MK7 and 3D Land were going to come out that Holiday season.

MH3/4 seemed like very possible panic mode events. If I remember correctly, it was rumored to be coming out on both consoles prior to that announcement. With MH3 showing up on much Sony press material.

Maybe, but it's not all about power. The Wii is proof of that.

Software is the other selling point but that isn't what sold the Wii. The Wii, specifically it's motion controller, was a fad that caught on with non-traditional gamers. Unless the Wii U pad can do the same (seems unlikely), Nintendo is going to have an uphill battle trying to convince traditional gamers to purchase their system if they aren't already fans of Nintendo properties (I think the N64 and Gamecube proved that they can't rely on their first party titles alone when dealing with traditional gamers).

I'm dumb, what game is 'su'?

I always thought panic mode meant they feared the incoming Vita and thus moved some games up. Thus it occurred prior to the 3DS coming out and bombing.
