Well, I think those PS3 numbers are a pretty big disappointment; if it sold ~550k during the Black Friday, it did pathetic numbers for the rest of the month. The Vita numbers are an embarrassment and there isn't much of anything to help it right now besides a potentially small bump from an official price cut bundle, but they've really missed the mark by not getting that out before the shopping season really started. Software is up in the air right now too. Their holiday games were a complete and utter failure. LittleBigPlanet Karting? I'd be surprised if people even knew this game existed. No marketing from Sony... because they absolutely fucking suck at it. Those All-Stars number really say it all... absolutely horrible. Not a good November for Sony. Pretty horrible, if I think.

Microsoft on the other hand, must be really happy. With numbers like that, they don't have much reason to really rush the next Xbox. The U.S is the market for them now. They can take the time they need. Sony on the other hand might be a little more pressed now.

it's a good sendoff for the system, but they're still going to be hurting. considering they're leaving the vita where it is (as a media moleculemobile), they're probably gearing up behind the ps4 more than anything.

I think it's actually FIFA 20. 25 if you count the FIFA World Cup series. 28 if you count the UEFA Euro Cup games. Or 32 if you count the FIFA Streets. It's going to be very silly if you include the FIFA Football Managers too (which frankly doesn't even make a little sense), then you are at way over 40.

Oh my god, I read the data wrong because I was skimming over it too quickly. It SHOULD be FIFA 20, you're right. I said there might be errors in that list.

told you guys. i remembered months back i said 360 BO II will sell more than H4.

I don't think anyone actually believed that Halo 4 would outsell BO2 on 360, or at least not anyone who follows NPD's at all :p. That clears that up, but BO2 being #1 could still put it in a pretty wide range under/over previous years.

What do you think lifetime sales will be? I'm thinking Halo 4 is going to be pretty front loaded, so I'd say 6 million worldwide...a far cry from the 9-11 million they managed under Reach and Halo 3.

Considering the next Xbox will probably launch next year I don't think Halo 4 will have the lifetime sales of the previous games.

What about Versus XIII.

The overall number looks worse than last year (better than I expected, though). Recession really hurts, doesn't it?

I'm wondering whether the game industry as a whole (including mobile phone games) is declining or not.

Social gaming has meant it'll be harder than ever to move people to a new console.
Why play the new new thing on a new console when I can play the new thing on my current console which all my friends have and I play as a way to socialise with them?

Seriously. COD is an annual game now to refresh and offer a new collective experience for these players. Thats why it sells so well.

I think this is going to make it tricky to sell next gen consoles to people without a big big software push to 'force' them to upgrade.
This is obvious every gen, but I think its going to have to be forceful from Sony/MS.

If they don't make that investment then they might lose third party support for the new systems, sure they might release on them, but they'll also release on the PS360.

Nintendo have their first parties, I think Sony/MS need to be able to come out with theres at launch then pull back to let third parties take the main earnings of the userbase.

Likewise whoever has the best content will get the best sales by multiplications; as they are giving the most reason to leave the social environment of the previous consoles.

Unless theres a BIG online change for either of them that is. Sony is in the best position for this.

I think it has to be PS4, guess we'll see how WiiU does, but its a serious threat to them in Japan.

New consoles and new original big IPs are needed to revive interest in the industry.
People cannot continue to play COD and AC forever.

I find it absolutely insane that Sony had nothing for this Christmas.

Is there some story there, or did they honestly think that Playstation All-Stars was going to do huge numbers and sell systems?

someone told me h4 will sell more but i think it was a youtube comment.

If I had to predict I'd say almost every one of those will bomb. The Last of Us is the only one that could buck the trend. God of War will probably be a mild hit, which would be a disappointment for the franchise. Beyond Two Souls, Sly Cooper, Puppeteer, all mega bombs.

Also, when you see AC3 apparently breaking a million on both PS3 and 360, while it's not even able to break 100k (I'm not even sure if it hit 50k) on the Wii U, it's easy to understand why so many 3rd parties seem to be very hesitant to jump on the ship. Of course, the Wii U is a new console with a negligible user-base but ... that's exactly the problem. Releasing a Wii U version ultimately doesn't make a difference. I doubt this is going to change over the next months.
You port now to build and define an audience. That's how COD went from COD3 selling 20k on PS3 in 2006 to Blops 2 selling over 1m this month.

Wii U sold out? Stock seems to be replenishing quickly then. Saw a few Deluxes and the white ones in stock at the Hollywood Target recently.

Not really. Read my post above.
People that buy consoles day 1 are the fans. Of course mario's attach rate is going to be high...even though it's not nearly as high as it should be considering we know what a zelda day one release could do. And what exactly is mario competing with right now? ZombiU? Now is the time that attach rates would be high. As the userbase increases and varies, they go down. Calling out attach rates about sales or fatigue is absolutely pointless on all accounts. Nobody divided all Wii game sales in half because it had twice the consoles sold or quadruples the Vita's software sales, and they shouldn't...it would be a completely dumb and desperate thing to do.

Nintendo released its biggest weapon on Day 1 and the system did not sell out, and you can say the exact same thing for the 3ds this holiday season. That alone shows fatigue for the 2d mario experience and for mario as the mascot for the brand: the never ending charting plumber with long long legs...except he's not charting anymore..nor is mario kart. Fatigue? Impossible.

In 2006 or even 2010, if someone were to ask, "If Nintendo released a new console and put out a 2d mario day one to help sell it, would it sell out?" You would have been laughed at on Gaf for asking such a stupid question.

Edit: And H4 didn't stand a chance because of Reach's reception. People buy (or don't but) the sequels based on their how they felt about the previous iteration.

Nintendo's marketing has been terrible. I don't think many people outside the core gamers even know that it is a new console, or even that it exists.

I can attest to this through personal anecdotes.

My own sister, a gamer, thought it was a new off-tv dual screen repackaging of the wii.

What the fuck.

At least Sony are supporting their console with first party titles. In comparison MS don't seem to give a shit. Although with sales like that perhaps it makes sense to cream off third party license fees.

Industry is in for a decline. Especially if next gen is just the same games we have been playing except bigger and shinier. This was a big gen and there was a lot of expansion in gaming so now it is only natural for things to fizzle out a bit. Not to mention that a lot of people are getting their gaming enertainment through internet and phones in addition to other types of entertainment.

Microsoft said "nearly 2x" not " 2x" :)

Then it depends on what Microsft means for 'nearly'.
If PS3 sold 750k which sounds more reasonable considering the 525k units sold during BF, double that is 1.5m which in my mind is not nearly 1.26m.
But maybe I gave them too much credit for being realistic in their claims :p

the system has been selling out at a decent pace throughout the month, but they haven't been impossible to find. it's not like the 360 or wii launch where it was incredibly hard to find, and i think it'll have a pretty slow 2013, prompting some major changes in the latter half of the year to get things moving. expect some months where it sells worse than the ps3 in america.

Yeah I'd love to play all of them, I was just talking about sales. Sony has the best and most diverse 1st party studios in the industry, imo.
