Because it didn't sell as well as the 360.

How did the PS3 do in 2010 in the same time frame that you mentioned?

If say, for example the PS3 had a higher profit margin per console, then you could argue that it is equally successful even with considerably lower numbers.

So prior to 2010, did the 360 not sell so well because the Wii was outselling it?

Again, I don't understand the logic that you have to be the top selling console in a region to be doing well.

In November 2010 PS3 did 530K and 360 did 1.37M.

No way should Microsoft wait on a launch until 2014. Right now the XBox 360 brand is hot but as a whole videogame sales have been down the last couple of years and some major titles haven't performed well. If Microsoft launches next year they'll have a lot of momentum going into next-gen.

Seriously, you launch when you have momentum not when you've completely lost it. Wii U should have been out last year.

Something is seriously wrong with 3DS marketing considering the DS increase/sales and 3DS decrease. I guess the price drop will help solve the problem. If the 3DS picked up all the sales it's losing to the DS it wouldn't look that bad.

That's what happens when you new handheld looks pretty much exactly the same as the old one and there is never a real indication that there was a switch over. We could also just be wrong and the 99 dollar DS systems just show that people want cheap stuff.

Oh yeah PSASBR is probably the biggest flop of the year.

They'd risk destroying the long-term value of the brand though.

Skylanders will flame out eventually too.

Why would making Pokemon games based around figurines destroy the value of the brand when releasing two games on a yearly or biannual basis for over nearly two decades hasn't?

Jesus Christ, if Nintendo did something similar to Skylanders with a Pokemon license, they would fucking print money.
They were planning on doing it for the Wii U for all games. Ubisoft even had a leaked trailer showcasing figurines from rayman and assassins creed. For whatever reason Nintendo dropped the feature.

Of course, but the Wii U is running out of time. Considering that apparently many developers are already struggling to get current gen ports run on the system as good as they do on PS360, I just have a hard time imagining that they'll invest the time to update their tools so much that the console will be able to play downported PS4/XB3 games if the sales numbers aren't already supporting it.

Like I said earlier, the Wii U is in kind of an awkward place in terms of 3rd party appeal. It's either a year too late or Nintendo should have used hardware that's more future-proof instead of just a little more powerful than PS360.

But, who knows, time will tell.
Sure, but what'd you expect? What do you think 3rd parties expected? Million sellers in a week?

Premature condemnation. Like you said, time will tell, but as of right now these sales seem to be pretty in line with what most people expected.

Smash would, but it's an established franchise that's got a large fanbase, 13 years of history, and in general represents a much stronger group of IPs than Playstation All-Stars does.

Expecting the game to do Brawl numbers is like thinking LittleBigPlanet Karting is going to sell like a Mario Kart game... Sony couldn't actually have had those expectations for the thing?

Probably not. But they still could have expected it to be their best selling game this season.

Actually, it might be.

Because making people go to a store to purchase something related to your brand once a year or every two years is one thing, while making them go back time and time again to purchase figurines to "improve" their experience is another.

I just don't get where PS3's headline Christmas title was. I've never known a company just... sit out the biggest time of the year to this extent before.

They were after the "value" consumer, offering a bunch of collections. It appears to have worked quite well for them.

His comment could have meant a number of things because it didn't specify any given platform.

They sold more than double Wiis, Wii U's, 3DS, DS, Vita, etc and PS3 could have done better than 2X and his comment could still stand, talking about an average per platform ratio.

Its not dropped. Its still in the system. Just no title are using NFC yet.

Karting > All stars > Wonderbook ?

Looking at how sony is marketing in uk compared to us, it will be dead here

Sony will be disappointed by All stars but if karting sells more then All stars they will be satisfied.

Sony has said nothing?

I don't know if it's the same in the US as it is here in the UK, but Professor Layton is pretty huge. Paper Mario is a pretty solid title too, though yeah, Nintendo's 3DS lineup hasn't exactly been stellar.

3DS has been doing much better in Europe following XL/NSMB2/Layton than US over the same period.

I'm in the UK too, and, while Layton's pretty damned big, it's not suited to being one of the two tentpoles.

Besides, Layton's an annual, expected thing. In terms of big occasional franchises, there's Paper Mario, and Paper Mario alone, to carry the slack.

Especially since the series is not represented well on consoles, if anything it would help the brand expand, keeping a monkey maker toy line on consoles while maintaining the original fanbase on the portable line, but who knows?

NSMB2 is out there too. Paper Mario we'll see - don't expect much.
3DS XL should sell well with the free downloadble game stuff though.

Have Nintendo released any figures? Or are you just taking software chart positions?

They put out charts on each region in their financial report. Europe has gone up since XL and US went up but back to lower levels reasonably quickly.
EDIT: Layton am going on 'it did chart' but we'll see how they do in Europe.

I'm not sure why you say Layton doesn't count because it's annual? Call of Duty, Assassin's Creed and Halo are all annualised franchises themselves. I agree that Nintendo could have done a lot better this year though.

Again, I don't understand the logic that you have to be the top selling console in a region to be doing well.

In November 2010 PS3 did 530K and 360 did 1.37M.

If it was not selling well because of some reason based on fact/data then sure.

If it was not selling well because it didn't meet some arbitrary expectation then no.

I never claimed that a console needs to be the top selling console in a region to be considered to be selling well. Where did you get that from?

I also think that if, for example the Wii did 1 million and the 360 did 750k then, yes, you could not use the same word to describe their sales seeing as one is considerably better than the other.

The more I think of Greenberg's comment, the more I believe it is interpreted as if they almost sold more than 2X every platform.

Meaning, nearly every single console/handheld was outsold by double, but not all. In this case, that means the PS3 managed to do better.

His statement doesn't give any indication of the relative quantity of how much they outsold the console that managed to do better than getting twice outsold.

You stated that the PS3 didn't do well.

I asked you why. You said "because 360 outsold it"

I never really heard anyone claiming 360 sales were bad prior to 2010 for the month of November. Didn't do nearly as well as Wii, but no one was claiming it didn't do well. Quite the opposite, actually. Which is a little strange since the estimated PS3 sales this month are approximately on par with what the 360 would do prior to 2010.

You've got a point, but I guess those titles are bigger franchises pushed to be huge events, whereas I haven't got a sense of Miracle Mask being anything but just the Next Layton.

I was talking franchise games of the strength of 3D Land or Mario Kart. Animal Crossing would have fit the bill nicely; BIG mistake not to have that ready for the West.

I'm sure low price is a big factor but poor advertising is another key factor. They only push major games that don't look that massively different from their DS iteration(to the average consumer). They don't spend enough advertising the differences and making it known its the next iteration. Really bizarre considering noa did extremely well with marketing Wii/DS and pushed both hard.

I thought it still had NFC?
I didn't mean dropped. I meant not heavily advertised and it seems Ubisoft did drop the features for AC at least. Then again I think it was in poor taste to do action figures for an m rated title.

I agree.

I think if they don't hit considerably before the PS4 and while the 360 is still pulling decent numbers they will be in for a tough battle.

THE WORDS! They'll drift away without the _!

They might as well have said 3x then.

I agree . . . but it may be tempting. With the Wii U apparently being a bit of a dud, they don't have to worry about it much. And Sony is in terrible financial shape and probably wouldn't mind waiting another year.

You gotta wonder if Sony & MS have some behind-the-scenes (and probably illegal) talks about whether they will both hold off on next year. But that is just crazy speculation.

A bit of a dud? It was only 50k behind the Wii's launch, and it was better than the 360 and PS3 launches!

Definitely agree with you on Animal Crossing, don't know why they didn't get that ready in time for Christmas. They already have Luigi's Mansion, Monster Hunter and Fire Emblem for early 2013, so it's not exactly like they needed to hold it back. Would have been much better coming out now.

Playstation All stars Vita DD > Retail [?]

When they give it away with PS+, sure :p

I'm kind of bummed that COD had to start it's decline with the best game in the series since the original MW. (at least in terms of campaign)
