NPD October 2012 Sales Results [Up3: NBA, MoH, NSMB2 + History, Pokemon, RE6]

Not that I have a working 360 or let commercials for games sell me on them, but forza had a really bad commercial, at least in Canada with the girls voice as the car leaving the guy.

I am also surprised dishonoured beat out borderlands, but I bought both day one and am glad they sold "well?"

O creamsugar, where art thou?

Buildin energy for next month's craziness. So much stuff will be interesting next month. First and foremost the Wii U launch and everything surrounding it. How will the PS3 do with that pretty damn good bundle at 200. How will the 360 do with some nice bundles. Will Paper Mario do anything for the 3DS to make it reach last year? And finally the month of truth for Vita.

XCOM had almost 80k people playing at once on Steam after it was released in Europe, so it obviously sold over 100k for PC alone. Considering that most PC owners nowadays buys digital, it must have sold at least 200k across all platforms.

Borderlands 2 came out in September.

Looking at some big recent releases getting 4/5 review scores makes me think XCOM could end up being the ultimate disconnect between the game press and the general audience. I have a feeling it will win a lot of GOTY awards, and people who don't play PC games won't know what the hell they are looking at or when it came out. It was never my genre even when I used to play a ton of PC games.

This is the second month of sales for Borderlands 2, in its first month sold 1.48M.

Incredibly pleased that Pokemon won't be in the #1 spot in October or any subsequent month. These lazy releases need to stop.

I expect that Nintendo will try to bank more on NSMB2, which is still relatively new and could make a big splash during the holidays, I think. It's just up to Nintendo to release the NSMB2 XL (or any NSMB bundle), which, judging by the current BF ads, they moronically didn't do. Instead, a red regular 3DS with SM3D, just like last year. -_-

Sure, it will still sell, but a special edition would probably be more attractive to both newcomers, potential upgraders, and the odd double dipper.

NBA 2k is basically the Madden of basketball games so it being number one isn't surprising. Pokemon did decent for a game put out by the second studio since they tend to sell less for obvious reasons.

Its obviously a cash in but its not really lazy since GF uses a different team for the remakes and 3rd versions.

lazy? Have you actually played it? Anyway...

good for 3DS I guess. At least it's stable
The DS is unkillable. That thing keeps raking in cash for Nintendo
X-COM is kinda expected, but seeing that they made a profit out of such a low number, I guess that's good for them

How many times do we have to say this to developers: Americans don't buy racing games. Stick to the European market, fools!

(Seriously: while it's disappointing that Forza Horizon missed the top ten since it's very worthy spin-off for the franchise, it's not at all surprising)

I bet the number of releases has declined more than the sales per release again this month.

Been the case all year, market's down -20%+ but the number of new releases has been the primary driver of that, not how much demand the average title has.

Holy fuck at Dishonored's sales. I did not think it would do that well but I'm so glad it did. I'm sure it did well in digital sales as well.

Pretty damned happy to see Dishonored do those numbers. Might even be my GOTY. Here's hoping for a sequel.

I hope Nintendo goes crazy for BF deals or bundles for 3DS. Don't think Paper Mario will be enough.

We already know the BF deals. If they are going to do it it would be afterwords which I can only imagine they would offer if November sales were not great, and by then I think it would be too late to get retail up to speed with it.

Notable new releases in this period that didn't chart:

Dance Central 3

Fable: The Journey
Forza Horizon

Microsoft going third party confirmed.

In all seriousness, DC3 not charting tells you a lot how Kinect is absolutely out of the picture. I am dissappointed on not seeing Horizon on the charts. Great game

I wasn't expecting XCOM to chart at retail so actually I'm surprised it did more that 100k. Next month is going to be colossal.

Now that we know the sales of Dishonored we can deduce that Pokemon Black 2 / White 2 must have sold around 900k units, maybe even a million but probably not more.

01. Pokemon White Version (NDS) Nintendo - 1.3 Million
02. Pokemon Black Version (NDS) Nintendo - 1.1 Million

To be far, Pokemon Black 2 / White 2 are like the third version of a generation. It would be make more sense to compare it to Pokemon Platinum, which sold 805K copies in its debut month.

PS3 160k+ (Due to doing better on average weekly than last month) meaning Wii is a max of 51k given they're 212k combined (thanks to MS PR)

Thanks.

Pretty low for the PS3 compared to the 360. I think 360 is still doing great, this late into the console cycle.

3DO launched with Crash and Burn which was made by Crystal Dynamics.

Do have the top 10 broken down by SKU? And racing games don't sell that well in the US. Pick any racing game and you'll see the majority of sales are from Europe.

Forza 4 was in the NPD chart in Oct 11. GT5 was in the NPD chart in Nov 2010 as was Fable 3. Racing games do well enough to chart even on an individual SKU basis.

Dance Central games have never charted, but just like Forza, they have steady sales over long periods of time.

I hope the 3DS sales improve when Nintendo finally starts releasing games without Mario in the title. Its lineup for the end of the year is really poor and it seems like Paper Mario was allowed to release this year because it was, well, Mario.

XCOM must've been pretty cheap if it's a sales success.

It did very well on PC digital (and it's a shame we can't ever get those numbers), very high concurrency, always on top of charts, buzz everywhere. It's a PC series and that's that, i'm sure it'll continue to pull in further big bursts of numbers when we hit the Steam winter sale. I just want a big, full blown expansion out of it, I'm a little concerned with their early DLC.

Personally, while I like the new direction more, I'm still a little surprised they even released it on consoles. It's a little late in the cycle to pave new ground, if that was the attempt.

It's the best handheld game this year.

I wouldn't even say it was the best handheld release of October 7th. Barf.

If the PSV did 40K, then it's around 810K now.

Thanks JVM!

3DS was at 6.2M , more or less, in August I believe

Thanks man.

That is really crazy considering how well Wii was selling out of the gate. It seems like it completely lost steam about halfway through the hardware cycle.

Ironically it was around the time it got a price cut in 2011 that it started to falter badly.

I'll gladly eat crow over Dishonored sales. Expected a total bomba. So awesome for XCOM to chart. Did you guys really think that a console strategy game was gonna chart? that itself is amazing. Happy that RE 6 under performed. Can't reward capcom for lazyness and rushing a product out.

Hmmm, guess the 360 could surpass the wii in NA when all is said and done.

Jan - Oct 2011, the 360 outsold the Wii by 1.24m, this year over the same period it's outsold the Wii by 1.57m, so despite sales down it's happening faster. After this holiday when the gap is down to 2.5m~ 360 will probably mirror this years PS3 sales (just like all this year it's basically mirrored 2011 PS3 sales), Wii will just ... completely sink, Jan - Oct will probably be 300/400k.

Gap will probably be 1 - 1.5m going into next holiday when the 720 launches.

It didn't chart in the top 10 if that's what you meant. We just know it sold 114k.

Come on insiders, spill some numbers!
