NPD Sales for July 2015

Sorry if it sounded like I was, I just meant to add my consideration on why Sony could decide to drop the price in the immediate future outside of simply winning mindshare in USA vs Microsoft.
Surely Sony's executives have far more datas of what we have and a lot of other factors are going to weight on their decisions.
Just saying that I wouldn't be too surprised if they'll decide to do it and that I don't think Microsoft have all that much to do with it.
No problem, this opinion is quite common. Me too i have it every second day.
And i surely WANT one for egoistic reasons (add smiley).

The sales gap between PS4 and XB1 in the USA since launch. This chart is totally made by me:

I can't really think of another example. EA left Steam to avoid paying the royalty, but Titanfall was being sold for peanuts weeks after release so they're obviously not against deep discounting.

I think Titanfall would be a special case, as it was a game that's solely multiplayer, so after the first few weeks of full price sales they might have seen they needed to up the player count and that's why they were willing to discount it.

I'm still pissed I fell for the hype and bought the game at launch. Only played a few games on my laptop and got bored. Discounted to $30 and less like a month later.

After Titanfall and Evolve there will be Battleborn to take the reign in the "Dead two weeks after launch" genre.

And now the question: will sony be able to reach the highest point once again this year? I'd say no.

Does it even matter anymore? I mean, percentage wise this ~1M gap is becoming more and more meaningless as time goes on.

Unless, if PS4 cuts to $299 and starts selling like 30% more from there on, the market is split.

I'm also sad to see Witcher 3 drop off so fast. That being said, there is no multiplayer and the free DLC, while nice, is not really ultra significant content. I guess what I'm saying is there isn't a ton of staying power. With the expansions though they have the opportunity for GOTY edition and so on.

My guess would be that Sony won't hit that high before the Holidays, meaning MS has gained ground on them over the last 12 months. And I'd guess that MS will have a stronger holiday that last year, narrowing the gap even more than they did in 2014. Net result would be a gap down to around 250k units heading into 2016. Basically neck and neck in the US.

So you think the PS4 will just stop selling or something here?

This holiday wont be as simple as last time.

Oh my god lol. Is this a branding thing now? Are we building GAF brands? I know I'm already infamous for my shit-posting, but I didn't know he had to have logos. Perhaps I should take a few marketing classes.
Havent some of his graphs been used on like kotaku or somewhere?

Might as well let people know it was you.

Honestly, I'm wondering why some people think the XB1 will win this holiday season with an even larger margin than the last. Personally, I think the PS4 has a great chance of winning the holidays, or at the very least, match it. A price drop is very likely coming and regardless of how much it is cut, it will definitely increase the momentum of the PS4 significantly. Also, Sony got marketing deals for most of the system sellers this holiday season and I'm sure we'll see upcoming bundles. I know Microsoft has some of the biggest exclusives coming out this year, but Sony should be able to counter that with price drops and aggressive bundles. Just my two cents.

I can't see a bigger margin. Last year was unique in that the X1 cut off $150 over the course of months leading into the crazy deals. That's just not gonna happen again.

The only time MS narrowed the gap was during the holidays and one month (april). I dont understand this perception that they narrow the gap every month. So long as sony outsells MS every month, the gap is widened. Whether its by one more sale, 25k or 250k. Sony has the lead and every month they outsell the competition, the gap is widened.

Will sony reach that million unit mark? Probably not. But i dont think they carw. MS will probably have to drop the price to recreate last year's holiday sale which is mot ideal for them. I think ms will win these holidays again with bundles and aggresive pricing, but i dont think it will be by as much as last year. Especilly if sony has BF and cod bundles. The elephant in the room is a ps4 price drop. I dont think itll happen this year, but when they do, it may recoup any ground lost so sony and ms will be right where they started.

Probably not. Overall MS has been closing the gap in spurts focused around holiday season and Siny seems happy to retain a lowly closing gap while holding a higher price point.

Makes sense given their large global lead. Sony can take it to the wire, let MS get close then drop price and make a play for a slim but consisted lead. Even a draw or close second place for Sony in U.S. is a win this gen particularly given globally their likely to finish well ahead.

It's already to late for MS to take decent lead in U.S. so Sony know the odds are on their side for a win, draw or close second in U.S.

Agreed. The deals for the XB1 last holiday season was beyond insane and I can't see Microsoft pulling a fire sale like that again. There will definitely be some great bundles from Microsoft but not as great as last year's.

I don't understand this mindset, yes MS did pretty much a fire sale on their console last year, but afterwards they were pretty much forced to do a permanent price drop and that couldn't have been healthy on their margins, I can't see them doing the exact same thing this year, also Sony is in an actual position to do price deals this year, hell judging by previous consoles they're way overdue an official price cut so it's even harder to see MS be the only one to doing enticing deals over the holidays.

Like others have said, I'm a little disappointed by Witcher 3's steep drop off. Not that it is something new, but I was hoping it would have the legs of some of the more mainstream titles.
.

I know for one I am waiting to buy it (ps4) when they acknowledge and fix the frame rate.

I am sure allot of people put of by 20 FPS.

There's no way Xbone eats into the PS4's gap as much as last Holiday. Unless you think Sony really enjoyed their rival's NPD wins back then. They obviously didn't and won't sit on their arses again. Difference this year is the PS4 hardware currently has room for a large price cut and I expect Sony to act on that when the time is right to hurt MS most.

how is it a mindset? I'm simply stating that MS appears to have a stronger software lineup this holiday than last, and Sony has a relatively weaker one. The result could be MS outselling Sony by more during Oct/Nov than they did last year. It is a statement/estimate, not a mindset?

I hope SCEA do something, but maybe their hands are tied? SCEE were very active in the UK heading off most MS moves with discounts/bundles offering similar value.

A definite no for me, as well. I think it's more important to reduce the holiday gap. If the PS4 manages to be outsold by, let's say, half of last holiday season's gap (300K), the Sony will be happy. Yes, it will still lose ground during the holiday season, but not as much.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a temporary $100 price cut as Sony focuses on the NA market with aggressive promotions while Europe gets €50/£50 cuts.

If they do that, and get good bundle deals out, they'll be very close to Xbone and can then start growing the sales gap to unprecedented levels next year.

I still feel like a price drop before the holidays are likely. Increases their exposure during the important months along with bundles, increases attach rate of other games, increases attach rate of PS+, increases attach rate of accessories like extra controllers.

Bundles I'm thinking...

1TB CoD Bundle with 1 year of PS+ for $399
1TB Battlefront bundle with 1 year of PS+ for $399
500GB AC Syndicate bundle for $299
500GB God of War 3 (and/or Uncharted Collection) bundle for $299

There's probably a chance the $299 guesses end up being $349 instead, if they want to keep them more profitable.

WOawiqx.jpg

i dont think they will bundle PS+ (free trials at most), it's their cash cow, i could see adding a digital voucher for the UCTNDC or GOW3R instead.

i agree with the rest of the 1TB but the 500GB bundles i bet they will go for $350 and a digital voucher. based on their lasts bundles

i would expect base models go for 300$ and a digital voucher for any game (but if i were sony i would bundle the UC remaster with everything to create hype for UC4 early next year)

How will they win September?

Uh why WOULDN'T they win September, with after effects of Gears and Madden at the end of August combined with Forza and Fifa marketing in the same exact month? Destiny has been losing steam for awhile and while there is a limited console MS also has 2 bundles (along with 2 bundle introduced in only a few weeks earlier from august) as well. MGV would have to sell better than MGSIV's initial launch month sales in order to be able to dismantle. Imo. This surprisingly close month already pretty much means that all MS has to do is one little thing.

I'm a little confused by those that think the gap is being closed little by little.

Every month Sony sells more, the gap widens right?

This Holliday, I can't see MS dropping the price like they did last year. They def have some exclusives to market with, but the price drop is what got them the sales. Not sure how much lower they can go at this point. Kinect is gone and they had to keep it $150 less since last Holliday just to keep up.

I think Sony is in a much better position to price drop this Holliday and do what MS did to them last year actually. With PSX in December, wondering what kind of tricks they will pull out of the hat.

It's widening but it's widening at a lesser and lesser pace, there are months were the leads were basically non existent. People, even me, were not only surprised by the Xbox One win, but looking back earlier in the year, expected sony to reach the old gap earlier, that's not happening.
If there's a decent or better gap this month with an Xbox win, it may be possible to even close the gap all the way or make it even smaller than last month, and with tons of big hitters combined with having games now in the first several months of the year, that could be even better in terms of sales.

Personally april's win and Mays small gap win for PS4, combines with the results of this thread are throwing all my PS4 domination predictions out the window for NA.

I don't think MS will cut the price outright (unless it's for BF) - but if they want to make Q4 interesting - they should start a xbox 360 trade in program from Oct - Dec. That will persuade ALOT of holiday buyers to upgrade from 360 - especially with the BC and core franchises coming out. I think this is a better image for them instead of "firesales" or "slashing" prices.

As for Sony - I'd really like to see them bundle BO3 and SW:BF (separately obviously) for $350 and in that same box a voucher for something PSN related.

I think both of these scenarios will do big numbers for both.

Ps4 has battlefront and cod this holiday. Anyone thinking Microsoft is repeating what happened last year is deluding themselves

That doesn't mean anything. Sony had GTA V last year but they shipped fewer than 500k of those bundles, which is ultimately why they got their ass kicked.

That was because the bundle was for only Black Friday whereas Microsoft had the AC, COD: AW, and SSO bundles all holiday season long.

heh

well tbh, a lot of what is posted on GAF is used on other sites so i wouldnt be surprised if a site/person existed that wouldnt even bothered to change image hosting and just link it as is as their own work

COD AW was limited and was gone when it was gone. Not many were put out.

The SSO bundle died out after October and din't even make it until the holidays. So not sure where you go that from.

AC was the only bundle that was widely distributed and was the only bundled really pushed. GTA V sold out all over as well.

They closed the gap from 1.1 mil to 800k since last year. PS4 also hasn't had ANY official price cuts as opposed to the Xbox. On top - PS4 won 6 out of the 7 months while having a price disadvantage. PS4 definitely has a price cut card up their sleeve and it could be big (could being the key word depending on how they execute). They also have 3 of the mainstream games being marketed on their platform - COD, BF, AC. If they bundle these with the system with a $50 price cut I think MS will have an extremely difficult time on their hands this year if they think they can outperform the PS4 with last holiday's numbers.

Still doesn't disprove my point that both situations are completely different, Microsoft Chad. MS had two bundles that sold out with another one chugging along throughout November and December. The GTAV bundle was only available for Black Friday.

1.1M to 500K, not 800K

I may be wrong but it seems like because I pointed out you were wrong about your above statement you're throwing an accusation towards me, that's a poor sport.
Also MS didn't have two bundles that sold out, SSO was not during the holiday, and COD: AW still had a few units in stores once the holiday was over, but it didn't matter because there was a limited quantity and it was very expensive. I have no idea why you're trying to spin things, GTA V was sold out, and when the bundle got restocked it sold out again, GTA V bundle was not just on black friday because I brought one for a gift in December.

Everything you're saying is pointless, I'm not even trying to defend the Xbox hear, you're just making up scenarios that didn't exist.
