NPD Sales Results for April 2016 [Sony, MS, & Nintendo refuse to comment on hardware]

Quantum Break number is terrible for a project of this scale.

RC was probably significantly cheaper then QB to make and advertise and it sold at least 50K more. That is disastrous for MS

I wonder if the MS suits will put a leash on Phill Spencer after this.

Star Fox 0 is < 103k

Damn. Xenoblade Chronicles X sold around twice as much as SF0 in its first month. But to be fair, XCX had the benefit of being released during the holidays. Even so, it's still a shame to see a Star Fox game selling so poorly. How does this game compare to previous Star Fox games?

Jesus, 150k including bundles. Wow.

So remedy isn't going to get any more exclusive work from Microsoft, damn.

How the hell do you still 150k with no competition, huge budget and huge marketing.

It's honestly not surprisingly.... Remedy have never really had a breakout, chart smashing success since... well maybe Max Payne 1?

They just don't make those kinds of games for that kind of audience, yet MS insisted on placing them in that AAA position.

I still adore them and this is fucking heart breaking to read :(

Honestly surprised about R&C being so high, it deserves it. So much doom and gloom for QB. Is it not also on PC? You gotta think that it sold a decent amount on there.

Ask me about the GAF Notebook
So is that the end of the Bravely Default series?

In the West probably.

First game had a good run up. Art style was impressive. Unique battle system take. First new RPG in a while from SE that played more like their traditional RPGs.

The game was semi niche though. So sales went down for the sequel as it wasn't the type of game series to get bigger and bigger with each entry. Some people felt burned by the final part of the first game (I know that's s hot debate). Some people just felt like the game didn't need a sequal.

Plus the original released during the heyday of the 3ds. This one finally comes West during the 3ds Twilight years.

I'm not surprised at all really.

Bravely Second doing just over half of Default's sales at retail makes me wonder: How many people got burned big time by everything Default did with repeated content?

I know I skipped because I still haven't finished BD...

Edit: Vanillalite nailed it.

I'm disappointed with QB's numbers. It's not a bad game, and Remedy is a very talented developer.

But they had very little competition, MS trotted this game out as a show-stealer constantly at E3 for the past several years, it's their big summer exclusive of 2016, they had slashed the price on the Xbox One all month, bundled it in, and even threw in a free copy of Alan Wake and all its DLC just to sweeten the pot.

And it still did those numbers?

I am worried. MS had no qualms about shuttering Lionhead Studios and cancelling Fables Legends, and that was a far more lucrative IP than anything Remedy has done.

I really hope they had a deal in place for Alan Wake 2. That's a studio that deserves to succeed.

Congrats Insomniac! It was an awesome game, launched at a really, really good price point. I hope this means more Ratchet and Clank games in the Future? (hint, hint; please bring the Future games to the PS4 in a "definitive edition!")

I'm just thinking about what Greenberg said about qb being a mega hit and having a bunch of pre orders.
Even Remedy was playing that game.

I guess the preorders actually came from the retailers who went with their gut instinct and how much guarantees MS was throwing their way.

Man, PS4 is killing the competition. It's actually good to see Ratchet at #2. Congrats Insomniac !!

As for the Xbox One, they're not doing good. QB looks like it failed and it seems with all the bundles and stuff, they couldn't make people forget about the PS4. This gen is clear as water, people's desired console is the PS4, easy.

I'm worried about the Xbox brand from now on. I love my Xbox One but man, it lacks variety, good will from consumers and hype. Nobody around my circle of friends wants to buy an XB1. I think a rebranding could do wonders for the brand.

I want MS to put the effort in making great games and trying to differentiate themselfs from the competition. As it is, the Xbox One is too much like the PS4 but weaker and not desired as a console.

I honestly think maybe the masses are okay with just having one console this gen and really moving forward in the future...

Times are rough (I know they are for me), so splitting that income between two consoles given their respective libraries, may just be something folks are not up for anymore

By era I guess I mean if I'm greenlighting a game in 2011-2012 I'd be more open to it being single player only. Where as come 2014 and beyond, I probably wouldn't do that at all unless your name is Fallout, Skyrim or a Naughty dog game

The message here is that you need to let talented game designers design the games. Having MSHQ mandate things like live action to push tvtvtv or require kinect functionality only to have it stripped out hurts the product. The same thing will happen if they are trying to shoehorn in games-as-service to push uwp (or whatever the du jour corporate stat is) into their next batch of games. It is the problem that big orgs have, they cannot focus. A spun off Xbox division would make better games and hardware.

Reducing things down to 'single player third person games don't work' is facilie. Dismissing UC and Fallout as somehow not relevant is disingenuous. The key is recognising and acquiring talent, preferably the kind who want 90+ hour work weeks lol, then letting them get on with it.

Alan Wake sold 145k on first NPD... similar result.

It also came out on same day as Red Dead though..

Really disappointing sales for QB. Hope MS continues to work with Remedy in future but I wouldn't blame them if not. The sales explain the out of thin air PC port release, MS must have panicked hard after seeing the preorders.

Microsoft hasn't been able to release a new AAA franchise successfully in nearly a decade and the marketing team can't seem to market anything well this generation. They announced this game way too early and by the time it saw the light of day, it seemed like a last gen type experience.

How many copies for Sunset Overdrive sell during its initial NPD? Can QB break that?

Edit: upon thinking about it, they did a good job of marketing TitanFall. Microsoft won't end up benefitting from that in the long run though

That is definitely surprising. Just over a decade ago MS were on fire with Halo selling like crazy, Forza, Gears of War, Fable, etc. I think what may have hurt QB are the POOR trailers. I recall being underwhelmed by all the trailers and couldn't believe how people were defending them. Poorly edited, quick flashes of gameplay, etc. Unexciting.

I also wonder how Sunset Overdrive did overall.

Outsell The Order? Haha, good luck with that. If anything, The Order will outsell it by a significant margin. It happened in the UK, the US will follow a similar trend.

Didn't think we'd ever compare, but there you go. On that topic I wonder what the Order's numbers look like now.

Where does MS go from here? They have Gears 4 coming but it truly just feels like the same game that came before it. Crackdown could be great but I'm not sure it will be a massive IP. Even if they come out with a new system what games are they going to push it with. I feel like the well that is their IP is just getting drier and drier

Resistance 4 is coming. It has to come now. Sailor please. I need more resistance

Congratulations insomniac

I would LOVE to see them take another stab at Overstrike. Overwatch proves that the art and character style is now viable, finally. Enough with the gritty M rated shooters!

I'm stunned that Quantum Break did so poorly (relative to what they probably wanted it to sell). It's a shooter, with cool looking time mechanics, has some pretty recognizable actors in it, and all around is a pretty gorgeous looking game. I totally would have went for it if I owned an Xbox One already, but I just can't justify the purchase.

It certainly should have been way more "sellable" than Alan Wake, which I loved, despite it's gameplay being a bit repetitive. Are there any Xbox One exclusives/new IP that have done well besides Halo?

I'd love to compare alternate universe #s where R&C was $60 to see how much the $40 price tag mattered.

I think it made a huge difference. For one that type of game can not compete with 60 dollar blockbusters like GTA, COD, UC, ect. Then it's hard for parents to justify buying their kids 60 dollar kids games. That 40 dollar price tag fixes those problems.

Maybe Silicon Studios move on and create another IP like they did when they went from 4 Heroes of Light to Bravely Default but there is also the fact that Bravely Second looks like it costed much less than Second to make with all the reused content so...

Any data about how the game performed in Europe?

Honestly, it's always been this way. Only enthusiasts buy more than one console.

That being said, I think you're right in the sense that it seems to be even more true this generation. If I had to sell my Wii U and XB1 tomorrow, I'd be fine with just my PS4, as it suits 95% of my gaming needs.

I feel that Gears 4's sales are going to be incredibly surprising...in a bad way. Maybe I'm completely wrong, but I'm not feeling good about that game's chances. It feels like a franchise lost in time.

Sea of thieves! With the sucess story of Destiny and Division, MMO lite is the new hotness, plus cross play with PC, it will do wonder, I think.
Don't forget that number 6, Mincraft. They could make Minecraft 2.

Gears 4. They need Gears to be a massive success this year and Crackdown and Sea of Thieves next year. I know it feels same old, same old but Gears has a solid fanbase.

How does this game compare to previous Star Fox games?

Well, all considering it did better than i expect.
It outsold at retail the last main Star Fox game on home console, Star fox assault on Gamecube which sold 89,000 unit first month in February 2005.

EDIT: Also that month the GameCube sold 116,000 unit. lol, not good numbers but compared to Wii U those looks like monster results. :p

I think needing two subscriptions is kicking Microsoft in the nuts as well. With Sony jumping on that train and now number 1, Xbox One is even less appealing.

Sorry but this is not Microsoft's fault. Remedy received a new opportunity from MS after Alan Wake and they blew it again.

What do they need to have a big sucess? I think it's entirely up to them.

Lol at GTAV being #7. That fucking game. WHO Doesn't have it yet?! It amazes me how that thing is just a regular chart fixture on these lists. I'm like, are people mistakenly buying it over and over again? I know I bought the PS3 version physical when it released, then I bought the digital PS4 version when it was on sale some months back, but I'm so impressed by how well it has done across all platforms.

As a diehard Ratchet and Clank fan, I am so happy that it looks like people are finally getting how amazing of a franchise it is. I hope Sony is pleased with the results, and maybe we'll get more sequels. I certainly wouldn't scoff at a Resistance revival. I loved all three of those games, and the PSP title too. Just bring over all of the first and second party PS3 titles to PS4! Where's 3D Dot Game Heroes PS4, From Software?!

I am worried that Gears 4 won't be big enough for their expectations and then that start slashing all their other projects (budget ect)

So Quantum Break sold 150K including bundles? How about without bundles? I want to see if my predictions of 120K or less was right. :p

The Bravely Default series was dead long before it came out in the west. Poor sales in Japan ensured that. Considering what it was Second seems to have held on okay, though not great.

With that art style? I highly doubt it.

Well they have a chance on PC, but being a W10 store only game kills any chance the game will sell anything decent on PC.

2K should buy Remedy/fund Remedy's next project if MS doesn't want to continue working with them. With their experience in making single-player (driven) games commercially successful, they'd be a great fit for the type of games Remedy wants to make.

Given Microsoft's first-party studio situation, though, they'd be stupid not to at least fund Alan Wake 2 and see where that goes.

Amazing numbers for R&C. I really enjoyed the game. Waiting for the next one.

Quantum Bomba. It's hard to criticize fellow countrymen, but damn! I think Remedy needs to rethink their future with MS. Maybe contact Sony or something?
