NPD Sales Results for April 2016 [Sony, MS, & Nintendo refuse to comment on hardware]

Too bad about Quantum Break. It really was a great experience but a flawed game nonetheless. Still, it deserved a better audience.

I agree with everyone claiming bomba - as heavily hyped as QB was with marketing and advertising, and not having any competition from other new AAA Xbox titles, and it couldn't even move 1% of the hardware base at retail. Wii U, despite having sold less hardware, fares better with their first party titles in terms of attach rate.

Which makes me ask the question, who is the Xbox audience? It's still selling relatively close to the PS4 in the US, but what are the buying for it? Halo wasn't the massive hit everyone was expecting (has it hit 5 million in sales yet?). Is it just the Minecraft/CoD/GTA/Madden box? Selling only to "casual" console players?

I know one thing: it is about time for a Resistance game. Maybe a prequel or reboot.

Make it happen Insomniac and I will happily buy it at a high price!

People are buying consoles for the third party titles and already well established exclusive franchises. You mentioned Halo and while it didn't do as well as many expected, the game was still the top selling 2015 exclusive in America.

New exclusive IPs haven't really done much for console sales this gen in America so I'm (sadly) not surprised by Quantum Break's very low impact on Xbox One sales.

Has it not always been that way for years now ?

Alright guys at work and can't skim the thread. Any ps4 numbers? Any other numbers of note?

You know what, the mods can delete this post if they want.

Thanks to a good source

PS4 - 175k
XB1 - 168k
WIU - 32k
360 - 13k
PS3 - 4k
By the way

The average weekly average drop from March
Code:
Xbox One 167,600

MoM drop = 31%

YoY drop = 10%

Weekly average

Xbox One March: 241,500 / 5 = 48,300
Xbox One April: 167,600 / 4 = 41,900

Drop = 13%

Code:
PS4 174,800

MoM drop = 47%

YoY rise = 0%

Weekly average

PS4 March: 330,100 / 5 = 66,020
PS4 April: 174,800 / 4 = 43,700

Drop = 34%

Code:
Wii U 32,300

MoM drop = 51%

YoY drop = 25%

Weekly average

Wii U March: 66,200 / 5 = 13,240
Wii U April: 32,300 / 4 = 8,075

Drop = 39%
Is actually the industry average. Average this month is ~29%, and since 2010, the average equals ~30%.

Sony, since 2010, averages drops ~35% this month, which is almost exactly how it acted this month.

Nintendo, since 2010, usually drops ~30%, but Wii U sales will drop significantly from this point on, so going against that this month makes sense.

Xbox, since 2010, usually drops ~25%, and the Xbox One had a $50 price cut this month, so while it barely did shit, it still affected the weekly average from the norm.

Thanks. So the ps4 was flat YOY. I think we're entering the slow months and won't see any notable hardware spikes until August or September. Or if the price drops.

But damn at those Xbox numbers. Price drops and trade in deals and it still couldn't beat out PS4.

Ugh, looking at those numbers, April truly is a pretty slow month for hardware. May should be looking better for the PS4, though, and I expect the XB1 to be down YoY again.

Yeah, but as Welfare pointed out......this has been the norm for April for six years. Not really a big deal IMO.

Let's see what Uncharted and No Man's Sky do for hardware.

Not saying it is a big deal at all. It's just that seeing the sales being so low is kinda depressing. Yes, it's the norm, but I guess it's kinda instinctive that low sales look depressing.

I'm guessing MS saw how poorly QB was doing in their projections which is why they announced a PC version out of nowhere. They should really consider Steam, unless they want to sweep the losses under the rug like Fable legends. The Windows store isn't going to boost sales to any degree.

March was when it dropped to $299 right?

So basically we are at the point that to generate any meaningful increased demand for an XB1 it's at the initial phase of a marketed price drop

Thanks for that info btw

February was when Xbone dropped to 299$ ( Amazon then ). During March and the almost whole April it was 299$ nation wide and also 100$ trade-in deal at Gamestop. And also there was a trade-in deal for PS4 in April at Gamestop ( for 1 week IIRC ).

If those sales are correct then I'm shocked MS didn't jump at the PR. Technically they could have said that 'Microsoft was the best selling home console brand for the month of April' with the XB1/360 sales. But they didn't. Maybe that's why Sony said nothing. They saw that opportunity and were waiting to rebut it and now they are in a stale mate lol

Now that you say it, I can't believe they missed that opportunity! Most likely too focused on miles driven and shots fired to bother with actual sales...

Most people outside of gaming forums probably aren't even aware of the rumours. I've never believed in hardware rumours or announcements having an impact on live product sales. I see this a lot on GAF, but where is the evidence? Genuinely curious.

There isn't any direct evidence. It's confirmation bias. Looking at Hw data on a monthly basis across an entire market and saying that X or Y change is due wholly or in some specific part to one specific influence when there are a multitude of factors that impact sales is impossible to prove in all but the rarest of occasions.

For real. Not sure why it's an opinion that's gained so much traction.

I don't see why MS would ever greenlight a single player game. Their audience just is not OK with it.

They would go back on the "we only report MAU" reteric from Last year and would be crusified by everyone
(on GAF)
for only spouting sales when they are winning.

I take the good Ratchet numbers as the sign of a concensus behind character platformers. Not random Insomniac IPs.

Ratchet isn't a platformer, it's a 3rd person action game (shooting being its primary focus). Those clearly do well on ps4, as next month will also prove

So why is April a bad month for console sales?

Everything outside the holidays being pretty shit is the norm now in this new contracted marketplace

Agree with this, but weren't there rumors about Alan Wake 2?
Bet there's a good way to turn that game into a service also.

There is no way in hell they greenlight AW2 now.
Terrible news for Remedy. Will be interesting to see how this affects their partnership. Next game could be multiplatform ala The Order.

Well I guess you could say this was still a remnant of a past era( since QB has been around for a while)

And everything else that they've announced has a multiplayer/ co-op component( Scalebound, Crackdown, Gears, Halo, Forza, Sea of thieves)

I guess the only odd man out is Recore.

Who owns the IP for Alan Wake? Given that their type of market seems to be on the PS4, if they own the IP, could they make it for the PS4?

Low-ish QB sales were kind of expected after the underwhelming UK sales but man, for one of the more exciting XBO exclusives that's just a really disappointing debut in the US. :/

Maybe if they priced QB at 40 U$ they could keep better position on NPD...

I'm almost sure!

Maybe MS could own up and do what they apparently actually want to do, and just have Remedy make them a pretty benchmarking demo for DX12 in the style of Futuremark.
